Our Haunted Planet

A Not-So-Happy Thanksgiving

Juan admits he carries the Iraq war with him, especially some of the feelings, sounds, images and smells that never seem to leave. He is deeply troubled by some of the things that happened, too.
Unable to find steady employment and having to move back home with his parents, Juan sometimes thinks of himself as a "living casualty." His deployments and the war in Iraq and military occupation have also been hard on his parents and younger brother. He related an incident in which his father refused to fly an American flag on Flag Day. His father, like Juan, no longer supported or believed in the war. When a neighbor accused him of not being patriotic, a fight broke out. His mother, who had always opposed the war, still cries.

Freedom Rider: Obama Style Fascism

Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and company were openly and unambiguously fascistic in their intent. Under Democratic Party control of our government, all of the signs of fascism have not been reduced, they have increased.
Obama and company use different language, and if words were the only proof of evil intent might be considered more benign.

Apathetic Voter

The Downfall of Democracy

A democracy will continue to exist up until the voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority will always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship.”
  “The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

q       From bondage to spiritual faith;
q       From spiritual faith to great courage;
q       From courage to liberty;
q       From liberty to abundance;
q       From abundance to complacency;
q       From complacency to apathy;
q       From apathy to dependence;
q       From dependency back into bondage.”

Chilean Economist Manfred Max-Neef on Barefoot Economics, Poverty and Why The U.S. is Becoming an "Underdeveloping Nation"

"Economists study and analyze poverty in their nice offices, have all the statistics, make all the models, and are convinced that they know everything that you can know about poverty. But they don’t understand poverty,"

David Cornwell worked in the British Secret Services from the late 1950s until the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War. As the Cold War ended, le CarrĂ© continued to write prolifically, shifting focus to the inequities of globalization, unchecked multinational corporate power, and the role national spy services play in protecting corporate interests. "The things that are done in the name of the shareholder are, to me, as terrifying as the things that are done—dare I say it—in the name of God,"

When 90 percent of the large fish in the oceans are gone, when there’s six to ten times as much plastic as phytoplankton in parts of the ocean, when there’s dioxin in every mother’s breast milk, when background rates—or rates of extinction are a thousand to ten thousand times background rates, you know, it’s sort of just playing with numbers to talk about whether it’s killing the planet or simply mortally wounding it.
