What Antibiotic Resistance Looks Like: The NDM-1 Edition

There's a new antibiotic resistance gene, NDM-1, which stands for New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1. This gene has been found in Gram-negativeEnterobacteriaceae (E. coli and Klebsiella), and confers resistance to every penicillin derivative. Like the KPC genes, this gene is found on miniature chromosomes that also carry other resistance genes, making this organism resistant to just about everything we can throw at it.
By way of Maryn McKenna, we find this nice ATCC chart which shows just how bad one of these bacteria can be:

According to Russian textbooks, the reason for occupying Afghanistan was fear of Islamic jihadis. Ain't that a kick ? Never let a good feamongering exercise lie fallow.
He does seem to want to flaunt his immunity, doesn't he ? In the Topical Index is 'Law' see Bilateral Immunity Agreements, 2002 American Service Members Protection Act, 2006 Military Commissions Act  The 'law' is only for those subject to it : in a bipartisan tyranny things are different than painted.
Helping South Korea despite itself. December 11, 2006
A bit of history comes to mind in the wake of South Korean president Roh's refusal delivered at the recent APEC summit in Hanoi to sign up as a full participant in the Proliferation Security Initiative, the U.S.-led effort to prevent North Korea from trafficking in weapons of mass destruction.
In recent years, despite the tens of thousands of American troops there and the U.S. commitment to help defend it, South Korea has reacted to North Korea's nuclear program, missile tests, and grotesque human rights abuses with little concern for U.S. policy initiatives either toward North Korea or the security of the region. Now, South Korea's refusal to participate in the Proliferation Security Initiative raises the question: Would Seoul behave differently if Asia, like Europe, had a regional security organization committed to the survival of freedom and democracy?
The objection that Asia's past is an obstacle to updating the region's security arrangements misses the point. In fact, tension between Japan and other countries in the region--especially in light of Tokyo's desire to revise its pacifist constitution and take on a greater role in global security affairs--can be best managed by enmeshing Japan in a multilateral alliance of democracies.

In response to Steve Walt

With former President George W. Bush's memoir being released today, Steve Walt yesterday launched a preemptive strike against the Bush record. In this article, my fellow Foreign Policyblogger attempts to blame Bush for just about everything that went wrong in the last decade, while crediting Bush with nothing that went right.

Walt offers up a 14-point indictment against Bush (perhaps it's a sign of how animated some Bush opponents get that even the realists start imitating Woodrow Wilson, at least when it comes to writing 14-point documents). The more spurious accusations merit responses -- and the omissions bear noting as well:

( Oh, heck. I don't blame just Bu$h Jr.,  exactly...his course was set before Cheney stage-managed the looting of the U.S. Treasury. The 'Buck' certainly did 'Stop' with him, though.

War Over Monsanto Gets Ugly - Clipmarks

A delegation of politicians and community activists gathered on August 7 in La Leonesa, a small farm town in Argentina, to hear Dr. Andres Carrasco speak about a study linking a popular herbicide to birth defects in Argentina's agricultural areas.
A mob of about 100 people attacked the delegation before they could reach the local school where the talk was to be held.
