* Christians Hijacking Homeschooling?* An opinion column by Anthea Butler for MSNBC flat-out accuses white evangelical Christians of hijacking homeschooling. Her premise focuses on the shift to homeschooling that, she claims, occurred as a direct response to Brown v. Board of Education — the 1954 Supreme Court decision that integrated schools. In other words, evangelical homeschoolers are segregationists. But her main thesis isn’t the tired bromide about supposed conservative racism, but that the movement toward homeschooling thanks to the pandemic “is part of a larger project abo... read more

Kurt Lash on the Thirteenth Amendment and abortion
My thirteenth amendment argument for abortion rights has just been subjected to a sustained originalist attack by the distinguished legal historian, Kurt Lash. I appreciate the attention from such a major scholar, which indicates that after many years, my argument is finally being taken seriously. (Coincidentally, today it got a friendly mention from Linda Greenhouse in the New York Times.) But Lash is too good a historian not to acknowledge the counterevidence for his claim. Lash claims that the language of the amendment, drawn from the Northwest Ordinance, “was well known and ... read more

* UK: Windfall profits for offshore wind* It has been an interesting year for Ormonde, a small offshore windfarm in the Irish Sea, just off Barrow-in-Furness. The chief excitement was that during last summer, replacement blades being installed on one of its machines fell into the sea. It was lucky that there were no injuries as a result. But 2021 was also interesting because of all the ups and downs in the wind sector: a wind drought lasting for much of the year, and the dramatic surge in market prices for electricity in the autumn. Ormonde is the first offshore unit to report fin... read more
The case for Red meat - a Marxist defense of meat-eating
New Zealand schools have introduced a climate change resource that suggests children “eat less meat and dairy”, even though teachers will not know how much meat or dairy any child in their care has eaten. Opinion pieces in the papers have called for the reduction of meat and dairy in hospital menus, not usually generous sources of such foods, despite the well-known risks of undernutrition, especially of protein, in the frail and elderly. Globally, the influential and once-objective medical journal the Lancet has hosted Eat Lancet, a coalition of vegan and vegetarian technocrats bac... read more
