"Why do consumers, who interact with markets every day, have essentially no idea where prices come from?"
* "Why do consumers, who interact with markets every day, have essentially no idea where prices come from? I think it’s because they have zero incentive to learn. If I’m a price-taking customer buying in a competitive spot market, then all that matters to me is the price. I could have a crazy theory about where the price comes from that involves the phases of the moon and the appetite of my pet cat. Or I could have a sophisticated theory based on supply and demand analysis. The market won’t punish me for my crazy theory any more than it will reward me for my sophisticated theory. ... read more
Sunday Afternoon Links
This and that for your Sunday reading. - Beatrice Adler-Bolton discusses how the U.S.' debate over the most basic of COVID-19 protections reflects fundamental choices as to whether people should have even the slightest respect for each others' health and well-being. Glen Pearson notes that a (however unjustifiable) willingness to accept protections in order to avoid needless COVID spread will necessitate other, far larger changes in how we live our lives. And Public Health Ontario offers (PDF) a look at the current state of knowledge about long COVID - including the reality that i... read more

Political accountability meets ‘the permanent campaign’
It was pushing 11pm on the night of April 22, 2022, and everything that was going to be done — however little of that there might have been — was now well and truly done. The cover-up in Ukraine is getting worse
TBM Nation posted this interesting video on their blog. Locally the fake news is getting extreme. They ran a picture of a little girl with a tear running down her face smudging her blue and yellow face paint. I'm not agreeing with either side of this conflict but I am saying all this violence and displacement could have and still can be easily avoided. All the post coup president had to do was say we're not joining NATO and we're not putting nuclear missiles on Russia's border. His pride and selfishness caused all this unnecessary chaos as well as that little girl's tears. read more

Remember Odessa, Ukraine Nazi massacre May 2, 2014
* A Call for an May 2, 2022 International Day of Solidarity with the People of Odessa!* February 2014 saw the overthrow of the elected president of Ukraine in a violent, right-wing coup directed by the U.S. government (Victoria Nuland and V-P Joe Biden in charge). Just three months later, on May 2, Odessa experienced one of Europe’s worst civil disorders in many decades, when more than 50 mostly young progressives were brutally murdered by a fascist-led mob at Odessa’s Kulikovo Square Trades Union Hall. Ever since that day, relatives, friends and supporters of those who were ... read more

"Humanity Today..."
"Humanity today is like a waking dreamer, caught between the fantasies of sleep and the chaos of the real world. The mind seeks but cannot find the precise place and hour. We have created a Star Wars civilization, with Stone Age emotions, medieval institutions, and godlike technology. We thrash about. We are terribly confused by the mere fact of our existence, and a danger to ourselves and to the rest of life." - Edward O. Wilson read more

Back in 2008, many pundits claimed that the Great Recession showed the fallacy of a deregulated financial system. When all of the dust had settled, however, several points became clear: 1. May Day—Workers In India Feel Increasing Need For Unity
This year May Day is being observed at a time of increasing need for wider unity by workers in the wake of adverse government policies leading to increasing burden of unemployment and inflation at the same time. Policies relating to demonetization, poorly conceived tax reform in the form of GST, privatization, excessively stringent and poorly planned lock-downs have led to massive job losses and reduced income across vast areas of economic activity, while policies which favor big business interests contribute at least partly to rise of price of several essential commodities.
