"The Characteristic Human Trait..."
"Human beings never think for themselves, they find it too uncomfortable. For the most part, members of our species simply repeat what they are told- and become upset if they are exposed to any different view. The characteristic human trait is not awareness but conformity, and the characteristic result is religious warfare. Other animals fight for territory or food; but, uniquely in the animal kingdom, human beings fight for their 'beliefs.' The reason is that beliefs guide behavior, which has evolutionary importance among human beings. But at a time when our behavior may well lead... read more

*"Rebranding Nazism"* by Roddy Keenan "As a teacher of history, the topic of Nazi Germany is always one which generates numerous questions from students. How was the Holocaust allowed to take place? Despite discussing the role of propaganda and censorship, as well as the fear of opposing the Nazi regime, one still finds students often somewhat bemused. US develops cheap ship killer to deal with Chicom fleet
American Defense News: Communist China has been effectively employing a vast fleet of low-tech, lightly armed government vessels and dual-use civilian craft and naval militias to expand and dominate large swaths of the Western Pacific. Until now, the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard could only respond to this ‘Gray Zone’ armada with small deck guns, scarce heavy torpedoes, or expensive anti-ship missiles and line-of-sight laser-guided bombs. That equation has now changed as the Pentagon has shown off its latest low-tech 2,000-pound Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) – appropriately na... read more

Teachers' unions turned Covid into a disaster for the students
Washington Examiner: No parent needs to be told that remote learning during COVID was a disaster. But a new study confirms it. Its findings cry out to heaven for accountability among those who brought this disaster upon their own school districts by ignoring science and keeping school buildings closed long after there was any justification. Harvard researchers found that students in schools that stayed remote into 2020 lost the equivalent of half a school year of learning over the two-year window beginning in the fall 2019 academic year. There was a significant difference betwee... read more

Pennies, pounds, and politicians
Looking at the state of the country, I'm reminded more and more of an English proverb that my parents drummed into me when I was growing up: "Look after the pennies. The pounds will look after themselves." It referred to money (English currency), and basically said that if one doesn't waste pennies (i.e. small amounts), but saved them, one would soon accumulate a larger sum of money. Some would call that miserly; others, frugal and sensible. YMMV, of course. I think there are parallels between government agencies and that proverb. Many (most?) national government agencie... read more
