Snaps from The Mogollon

LL at Virtual Mirage - 19 hours ago
Blue Ridge Reservoir is located about six miles as the crow flies from the White Wolf Mine. Here are a few pictures. It looks more like a river than a lake as it snakes through the high country. Boats are limited to 10 HP. Or if you prefer, the canoe. It's all good. Fish varieties include rainbow, brown, brook trout, and largemouth bass. The lake is deep and it's a perfect place to run out the pop gear in search of a lunker. There are other lakes in the area, but Blue Ridge is the closest. Sunset and moon rise sometimes occur at the same time. It makes for an interesting evening.... more »

Russia's 85,000 Ton Aircraft Carrier Was an Unrealized Monster

Paul Richard Huard at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Paul Richard Huard* *Security, * It never reached the ocean. *Great nations have carriers, Russia considers itself a great nation, and therefore the ship would be a symbol of national revival and destiny. In other words, a new carrier would be one more reason to forget the bad old days when the Soviet Union disintegrated.* Had she ever sailed, the Soviet supercarrier *Ulyanovsk* would have been a naval behemoth more than 1,000 feet long, with an 85,000-ton displacement and enough storage to carry an air group of up to 70 fixed and rotary wing aircraft. World War III? Could China's New Missiles Sink a U.S. Aircraft Carrier?

James Holmes at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*James Holmes* *Security, * A serious threat. *How the navy deploys new weaponry as it enters service is nearly as important as fielding the weapons themselves. Under a concept dubbed “distributed lethality,” naval officialdom wants to disperse firepower throughout the fleet while retaining the capacity to concentrate firepower on target. What that means in practical terms is arming more ships with antiship missiles, supplemented by gee-whiz technologies like electromagnetic railguns and shipboard lasers should they fulfill their promise.* Ah, yes, the “carrier-killer.” China ... more »

On Philosophers Who Make History

Unknown at The Verma Report - 1 day ago
The philosophies of the past, which provoked a rebellion against the intellectual establishment of their time, have left an indelible mark on mankind. The rebellious philosophers have made history, while the conformist philosophers have been quickly forgotten. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were the rebels in Ancient Greece. Socrates was forced by the Athenians to commit suicide by drinking hemlock after he was convicted by a court for inciting a rebellion against the Athenian establishment. Plato and Aristotle narrowly missed having a “Socratic treatment” from angry Athenians on se... more »

Advances in Bio & Tech

David Brin at CONTRARY BRIN - 1 day ago
What's new in the realms of science and tech? Peter Denning interviews me about the “resilience” of our critical infrastructure, from the power grid and cell-phones to transportation, food supplies and solar roofs, in the new issue of Communications of the ACM (CACM). I offer a dozen measures - some of them incredibly easy/cheap - that could improve robustness against shocks, by orders of magnitude, preventing us from ever facing a “Postman” situation. For those of you who aren’t ACM member-nerds, I’ll post a version some time. And yes, I’m qualified as a physicist, electrical en... more »

"FDIC approves Volcker revamp, in latest move to roll back bank rules: The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. board voted 3-1 Tuesday to give big banks more leeway to make risky short-term bets in financial markets by loosening a landmark but highly contentious regulation known as the Volcker rule. The FDIC and four other independent agencies have dropped their proposal to tie the rule to a strict accounting standard — a move that banks argued would have made it more burdensome by subjecting additional trades to heightened supervision. Instead, regulators will give banks the benefit o... more »
