Nunavut, RCMP target unsafe gun storage after dozens of firearm incidents
Guns are a necessary tool in the North -- but as in the South they are
tools that need to be respected:
IQALUIT, Nunavut - RCMP and the Nunavut government are trying to change the

dozens of gun incidents that have threatened police and civilians.

A Pre-Post-Mortem on Romney’s Defeat
[image: 47-percent-e1348073613111]
It increasingly looks like Romney is gonna lose. Intratrade now puts that
likelihood at 75%. Now it’s my understanding from the American politics
subfield, in which I took exactly zero courses in grad school, that the
state of the economy is supposed to be the great determiner of American
elections. But somehow Romney can’t seem to win despite 8+% unemployment.
So I’ll take that as a methodological opening for wild speculation - namely
my own - masquerading as rigorous theory.
Given my masterful background in this field, which includes watching *M... more »
Concert of Asia in Crisis
The often maligned aspiration for a "Concert of Asia" appears to be even
more unlikely this year as Japan and China trade barbs at the UN and spray
water cannons at each other over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands in the East
China Sea. Meanwhile in Southeast Asia, China has succeeded in fracturing
the unity of ASEAN ministers over disputed territorial claims in the South
China Sea. Even though these conflicts are unlikely to lead to war, the
disputes matter because they influence whether the region will become
increasingly bi-polar or whether an international institution/society will

Chechen ex-militant: Georgia trained anti-Russian terrorists, then killed them in false flag op

A former Chechen militant has accused Georgia of training a network of
Islamic terrorists, claiming that a recent anti-terrorist mission on the

Georgian-trained jihadists. Last month Georgia claimed its forces had
killed 11 militants who infiltrated the country through the Russian

Romney Shrugged

One casual observation I suspect of having some merit is that people who
complain a lot about some failing in others are covering up something
similar in themselves. Perhaps those who make such a constant noise about
large numbers of our countrymen being freeloaders while covering themselves
in self-adulation would give weight to the conjecture. Are they really
getting a raw deal?

Little more than a month before Election Day, Barack Obama today played yet
another off-key rendition of Ronald Reagan's Welfare Queen Concerto.
Crooning the tired old refrain of "Blame the Victims", he has feebly
serenaded the ignored and still-ongoing American housing crisis.
While Mitt Romney is a ham-handed plutocrat stupid enough to shrill his
hatred for the underclass in an unsecured fund-raiser, Barack Obama is more
deftly circumspect in his disdain for poor people. Instead of placing the
blame for the housing mess squarely where it belongs -- on the too big to

Baekdusan: Volcano in N. Korea showing signs of activity, may have "catastrophic effects"
A volcano on the border of China and North Korea is showing signs of
increasing activity and could erupt in the next few decades, Chinese
researchers say.
A massive eruption of Baekdusan around 1,100 years ago spread ash and
volcanic gases for 30 miles and left a 3-mile-wide crater atop the volcano,
scientists said.
Three smaller eruptions have occurred since then, the most recent in 1903,
they said.
Seismic activity, ground deformation and gas emissions recorded in a period
of heightened activity from 2002 to 2006 suggests the magma chamber beneath
the volcano is growing.

Many commentators and economists wonder if the US is able to turn its
ailing economy around. The reality is that it is bankrupt. However, as long
as the dollar remains the world currency, the US can continue to pay its
bills by simply printing more money. But once the world no longer accepts
the dollar as world reserve currency, the US will no longer be able to
continue to pay its way or to fund its wars by relying on what would then
be a relatively valueless paper currency.
And the US realises this. Today, more than 60 per cent of all foreign

Syrian rebels claim knowledge of chemical weapons sites...Would you trust these Rebels with chemical weapons?
*(CNN) -- A series of videos uploaded to YouTube by Syrian activists
suggests rebels are beginning to focus on where Bashar al-Assad's regime
stores its chemical weapons.*
At the same time, a former senior officer in the Syrian Army who says he
was chief of staff of chemical warfare has told CNN that Iranian
technicians are helping with the regime's research into chemical weapons.
He also said they could be easily transferred by the regime to Hezbollah,
the Lebanese militia organization that fought a border conflict with Israel

FRENCH AUSTERITY: Could tough budget spark financial war?
*(CNN) -- The announcement was carefully staged and the tone decidedly
solemn. When French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault faced the cameras on
Friday morning in Paris, at the Elysee Palace, to divulge President
Francois Hollande's first budget, he appropriately talked of a "combat"
budget.
*
The French daily newspaper Libération even commented that "a state of
(financial) war had been declared." Having had to find an extra 30 billion
euros, notably from the wealthiest taxpayers' pockets, the 2013 French
budget has been heralded as the tightest since the Second World War.

BBC newspeak on mob hate crimes against Roma in France
So, here's a short note on a piece of news reporting that upset me quite a
bit yesterday night. Partly this is due to the nature of the events
described, bearing evidence of the French authorities' increased acceptance
of lawless harassment against Roma people, thus setting aside basic
obligations to tend to human rights, rule of law and legal security. But
even more so, *the way* in which these events are described upset me.
Especially considering the source being not the press office of the Front
