German unemployment rises for sixth month running

Joblessness remains near to its lowest level since German reunification

Twin Demons of War and Central Banking
*The twentieth century was the century of total war. Limitations on the
scope of war, built up over many centuries, had already begun to break down
in the nineteenth century, but they were altogether obliterated in the
twentieth. And of course the sheer amount of resources that centralized
states could bring to bear in war, and the terrible new technologies of
killing that became available to them, made the twentieth a century of
almost unimaginable horror.*

Why Humans Have Evolved So Fast
Yes, we need a better answer for why our brains evolved and grew so large.
It is pretty clear that when man left the forests and its troops, he became
man the runner who used his skills to exhaust game. That was two million
years ago.
The argument here is that larger groups demanded larger brains in order to
compete successfully. With constant conflict and best hunting grounds in
the balance, selection for larger troops was natural and possibly helped by
brain size. Except it really does not work that well.
More plausibly, the increase in population created communicatio... more »

Actual voter registration fraud
You'll be shocked to learn, in order to prove that it exists, Republicans
are commiting voter fraud themselves.
The Republican Party of Florida is dumping a firm it paid more than $1.3
million to register new voters, after Palm Beach County Elections
Supervisor Susan Bucher flagged 106 “questionable” registration
applications turned in by the contractor this month. Bucher asked the state
attorney’s office to review the applications “in an abundance of caution”
because she said her staff had questions about similar-looking signatures,
missing information and wrong addresses on the ... more »
Back on the KeyTrain Gang
At The Common Errant, I have frequently offered detailed reports on the
fraudulent nature of the corporate reforms in "education." Shining a
bright light (unfortunately lacking the sterilizing power of the sun) on
human malfeasance and corruption is a worthy endeavor if, in the end, it is
only a human truth in the age characterized by mechanical tyranny and
bureaucratic death squads. It is our current "ground of being." It is
because of this that I have come to feel a futility in opposition. But...

Best Shot For A House Upset In America: CA-25-- Buck McKeon vs Lee Rogers
Buck McKeon has never debated any of his challengers before-- and he never
had to. He normally won by massive margins-- 75% in 1998, 62% in 2000, 65%
in 2002, 64% in 2004, 60% in 2006, 58% in 2008, and 62% in 2010. But aside
from the basically downward trajectory of his support, this time McKeon has
angered his base and faces a serious opponent, Lee Rogers, who most savvy
observers think has a great shot for an upset. *Alternet* named the
district the top under-the-radar race in the whole country, meaning not on
the DCCC's or NRCC's radar.

Global Consensus: Zionism Is An Attack On Judaism
Anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism. As *Washington's Blog explains*:
"Most Americans confuse zionism and Judaism.
While many *assume* that zionism simply means allowing the Israeli nation
to exist, many zionists in high positions within the Netanyahu and Sharon
administrations advocate for very different policies altogether, including
the use of offensive wars throughout the Middle East. See this, and read
the section entitled “Securing the Realm” here.
In reality, many devout Jews are against zionism as being antithetical to
traditional Jewish values. As such, many Jews say th... more »
US Postal Service Prepares for Second Default in Two Months
The U.S. Postal Service will default this week on a $5.6 billion
congressionally mandated obligation to pre-fund retiree health benefits,
marking the second time in two months the cash-strapped agency has done
this.
The Postal Service last month failed to pay $5.5 billion for its fiscal
2011 prepayment obligation, which originally was due in September 2011 but
was deferred by Congress until Aug. 1. That was the first time it ever
defaulted on a payment to the Treasury Department. The $5.6 billion due
this week, on Sept. 30, represents this fiscal year’s obligation.

Super typhoon Jelawat to threaten Okinawa then Japan

26 September 2012
Another monster typhoon has spun up in the western Pacific. Following super
typhoon Sanba that ripped across Okinawa and then into South Korea, super
typhoon Jelawat is also eyeing Okinawa before a possible encounter with
Japan.
Jelawat is the equivalent of a category-4 hurricane, with peak sustained
winds of 150 mph. Briefly Tuesday, it reached category-5 strength with
maximum sustained winds of 160 mph becoming the second strongest storm on

The Supreme Court has reached too far
Last week the Supreme Court ruled an ad hoc group of existing and former
sex-trade workers has the right to challenge Canada's anti-prostitution
laws on constitutional grounds.
At first blush this seems like a sensible decision. After all, who has a
better reason to challenge such laws than a group representing sex workers
in downtown Vancouver?
However, this seemingly sensible result is based on a significant change in
the way the courts approach litigation and that change signals a shift in
the role of Canadian courts; a shift with real implications for democracy
in Canada.

Woodworth's Wank: The Vote
Woodyworth's Wank was defeated. A motion to study the Criminal Code's definition of when human life begins was defeated in the House of Commons Wednesday night. Members of Parliament voted 203 to 91 against Motion 312, sponsored by Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth. Not the crushing defeat we were hoping for. But defeated, nonetheless. More maybe tomorrow. Reuters
Michelle Conlin
The highest court in the state of Washington recently ruled that a company
that has foreclosed on millions of mortgages nationwide can be sued for
fraud, a decision that could cause a new round of trouble for the nation's
banks.
The ruling is one of the first to allow consumers to seek damages from
Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems, a company set up by the nation's
major banks, if they can prove they were harmed.
Legal experts said last month's decision from the Washington Supreme Court
could become a precedent for courts in other states. The case ... more »

the Syrian Army to join the "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) before realizing that

Organs taken from patients that doctors were pressured to declare brain dead: suit
Washington Post
Jamie Schram
The New York Organ Donor Network pressured hospital staffers to declare
patients brain dead so their body parts could be harvested — and even hired
“coaches” to train staffers how to be more persuasive, a bombshell lawsuit
charged yesterday.
The federally funded nonprofit used a “quota” system, and leaned heavily on
the next of kin to sign consent forms when patients were not registered as
organ donors, the suit charged.
“They’re playing God,” said plaintiff Patrick McMahon, 50, an Air Force
combat veteran and nurse practitioner who claims he was fired... more »
Rocket from Syria lands in northern Israel, Damascus official denies reports of misplaced army shelling
A top Syrian government official speaking to KleinOnline denied that a
rocket launched from Syria that landed in northern Israeli territory today
was misplaced Syrian army firing, as has been widely reported.
“I am not aware of any clashes between the Syrian Army and the rebels
taking place so close to the Israeli border,” added the Syrian official.
“In any case, the Syrian army does not fire rockets against the rebels.”
The official further said that mortars launched from Syria that landed in
Israel yesterday were not related to any fighting between the rebels and
the Syrian army.... more »

"I'm Lovin' It": Fast-Food Logos 'Imprinted' in Children's Brains, Study Says
Childhood obesity is a growing health concern in the public sphere, but for
many of us, it also hits close to home. But while public health campaigns
have singled in on parents providing children with unhealthy nutrition
options and with poor examples of healthy eating, new research indicates
that some of the problem may lie with fast food companies and their overly
effective marketing campaigns. A study has found that fast-food logos are
branded into the minds of children from an early age.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood

In The Watergate Affair, Bernstein And Woodward Were The Bad Guys, Not Nixon

Why Hasn't Anyone Done A Reality Show About Congress Yet? Or Did I Miss It?

Judges must consider the trial evidence in its entirety
Judges must consider all the evidence at trial - they do not have to recite
it all in their reasons but they must consider it. See today's decision in R. v. Clouthier, 2012
ONCA 636:
While trial judges are not required to make reference to every piece of
evidence, there is a duty to consider the evidence in its entirety, not
simply the evidence that inculpates the accused
