*"Weekly News Wrap-Up 9.21.12"* By Greg Hunter’s USAWatchdog.com "The Middle East and North Africa are on fire. The latest blow-up happened in Pakistan where the U.S. Embassy was attacked by protestors. There have been attacks and protests on U.S. interests in Middle East countries such as Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Sudan and many others. The Obama Administration says it is all because of some anti-Muslim movie, but many think it is way more about our foreign policy. The Obama Administration finally admitted the U.S. Libyan Embassy attack was the pre-planned assault by al-Qaeda. The U.... more »

May the name legitimately influence the fate of an application?

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 1 day ago
*Yes.* Cosmic Variance promotes something that feminists consider to be science, namely this paper in PNAS: Science faculty’s subtle gender biases favor male students The paper claims that they wrote 127 applications for a lab manager position, attached a random name of the applicant which could be either male or female, and found out that the applications with the male name had better ratings. The difference was comparable to 2 sigma in the individual cases, not too strong, and one may have doubts whether the research was done properly. Moreover, the paper makes it clear that ... more »

When a central tenet of Islam is questioned the results are protests and violent demonstrations. When the BBC report a controversial claim that 'An ancient scrap of papyrus makes explicit reference to Jesus having a wife' there is little notice taken. Is that the difference between being a temperamental teenager and being a mature adult? Imagine the BBC publishing anything that might be seen as detrimental to the Islamic prophet Muhammad without lots of caveats, if at all?

Gliese 163c: New super-earth discovered around the red dwarf star Gliese 163 'could support life beyond Earth'

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 1 day ago
*A newly-discovered 'super-earth' at the edge of a star's habitable zone could be a top contender for an alien planet beyond ours which supports life.* Gliese 163c, which lies beside a red dwarf star, has a mass of 6.9 times that of Earth and an orbital period of 26 days. Researchers believe the new-found world's location means it could be a super-earth where liquid water could exist. Astronomers found it using the European Southern Observatory HARPS telescope (or High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher). Read More

Latvian mother who already receives £34,000 in benefits demands a bigger council house for her TEN children

*Neighbours reacted with outrage last night after an immigrant mother of ten who receives £34,000 a year in benefits demanded that the council gives her a larger home.* Latvian Linda Kozlovska, 31, arrived in Britain with three of her children in 2008 and moved into a council-maintained three-bedroom house. Four years later, however, the single mother says she is unhappy living there – because she has had three more children and four others have moved over from Latvia. ‘I have ten children living here with me,’ she said. ‘I’m the only adult. 20 September 2012 Undeterred!*EPISODE TWENTY SIX: “Dedicated, thoughtful and whatever”* The women begin their first day as convicted serious organised criminals by protesting outside another US Base, this time Fylingdales. The ironic contrast between verdict and sentence raises questions among fellow campaigners as to the outcome for future arrests under this legislation. By making trespass onto military bases an ‘act of terrorism’ yet punishing those found guilty with, what is effectively, a slap on the wrist, the message to the peace movement isn’t entirely clear. Internal Baking Soda Therapy into Clinical Trials

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
It appears that we are seeing research momentum on the application of baking soda on specific cancers. This is clearly overdue. The key and compelling argument is that our modern diet is badly biased into developing acidity in our body, leading to a whole range of degenerative diseases. As I recently posted, a combination of maple syrup and baking soda is suitable for counteracting this effect. I would like to go a little further. Age related degeneration is generally excessive in humanity. In the wild, animal reach their past due date and abruptly and quickly decline. ... more »

Roundup has already been strongly indicated as an agent impacting Amphibian populations. Now we have a clear indication of damaging toxicity in mammalian populations. Our immediate take home has to be that application of roundup needs to be tightly managed. Complete rejection is the best option if it happens to be practical, otherwise minimize its use as much as possible. I do not have any sense here that the GMO corn is going any of the damage and this is something that needs to be also checked using the same protocol. In fairness, it should not. The plausibility of restoring the mammoth has just become completely convincing. These are not inexperienced eyeballs and way more important, having the content of a defined cell that is intact clearly opens the door for outright cloning using an elephant egg. Somehow or the other it is going to be done and actually done often. The idea that the cell is actually alive does begger our imagination, but we have restored living plant cells already, so why not? The point is that we are on the way to having baby mammoths and shortly thereafter the hunt will be on for the wh... more »

No - Till Helps Captures Snow and Improve Water Distribution

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
This is almost an outbreak of common sense, but what is also clear is that wind loss is possibly far less than the simple retention of a stubble held boundary layer. Certainly the build up in the low points appears to lessen. All this leads to a more uniformly and better watered field and represents one more compelling argument in favor of no till agriculture. Add in the judicious application of tree friendly fence rows to prevent a build up of any significant surface winds and we soon optimize the capture of winter snows. In time we will surely get this right and... more »

Thought is never new, never free, and therefore it's always conditioned, fragmentary, and so on. So religion is not a thing put together by Thought, or by fear, or by the pursuit of satisfaction and pleasure. But something totally beyond all this, which ... more »

I posted similar proposals on my blog on December 4, 2009 and May 27, 2010. According to government statistics, there are more than 80 million cellular phone users in Egypt. ... more »

The Difference Between a CF-18 and the F-35

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 2 days ago
If Canada had been operating the F-35 since 1988, we'd probably be hard pressed to find any still flying. Over the past 24-years, the twin-engine CF-18 has racked up plenty of bird strikes. In fact the amazing fighter, selected by the Trudeau government, has, during that period, had 67-instances where its engines ingested birds. A bird in the burner is always serious business. But a bird in the engine of a single-engine airplane such as the F-35 is a far different thing than a bird in one engine of a twin-engine fighter like the CF-18. Let's do the math. Two minus one equ... more »

The quite strange unarmed bird-like drone which was recovered by Pakistani forces in August of 2011 apparently did not just fly over Pakistan, but was also apparently spotted by Iraqi insurgents at least two years before making its way to Pakistan. One might jump to the conclusion that the drone belongs to the United States since the U.S. is involved a great deal of drone operations in Pakistan – which the Pakistani parliament has unanimously declared must end. What was the real meaning of Romney's declaration of class war against 47% of Americans at the $50,000/plat dinner at Mark Leder's mansion? This isn't about a "gotcha moment" or an embarrassing "inelegant" misstatement. This was the real Mitt Romney taking to American elites like himself... the vicious predators and self-entitled social parasites who are determined to suck Americans dry. As John Stewart reminded his audience Tuesday, it turns out, nearly two-thirds of Romney's "moochers," pay payroll tax and these freeloaders are actually comprised of those making less than $20,000... more »

It was over the weekend I started noticing the trees in my neighborhood slowly changing colour. A reminder is slowly starting to accumulate on my front yard although these leaves are pretty much all from the next tree next door. I've quickly lost track off how many long wavy "V"'s of Canada geese have overflown the area here in recent days and there is a perceptible chill in the morning as I wait for my bus to work. All signs that fall is right around the corner.

One cannot but admire the French for their refusal to kowtow to the despotic dictatorship of political correctness. In the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, the reaction of Muslims to the poorly made parody of Mohammed Mustafa (the alleged film, Innocence of Muslims), has been ridiculed. *Tokyo (CNN) -- The 40th anniversary of the normalization of relations between China and Japan will be marked on September 29 but there seems little to celebrate.* The territorial dispute between Japan and China over the rocky outcrops, known as the Senkakus in Japan and Diaoyu in China, has escalated beyond expectations as both governments have upped the ante and domestic politics constrains room for maneuver. As bad as it seems now, it was also quite perilous in 2010 after a Japanese Coast Guard arrested the crew of a fishing trawler that rammed them in the waters near the dispu... more »

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 2 days ago
*(Reuters) - Facebook has an ugly little secret, a number disclosed nowhere in its voluminous filings to become a public company and now only vaguely addressed by corporate officials.* An estimated 5.6 million Facebook clients - about 3.5 percent of its U.S. users - are children who the company says are banned from the site. Facebook and many other web sites bar people under age 13 because the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires web sites to give special treatment to children 12 or younger. The law aims to stop marketers prying personal information from childr... more »

Libya "terrorist attack": New picture emerge

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 2 days ago
*(Reuters) - The U.S. Consulate in Benghazi apparently was not troubled at first by a smattering of protesters on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks last week, but that changed abruptly at 9:35 p.m. when it sent a message that the building was under heavy assault, U.S. government sources said.* New information emerging a week after attackers launched rocket-propelled grenades and mortars and killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, suggests that the protests at the outset were so small and unthreatening as to attract little notice. *(Reuters) - Thousands of miners at Lonmin's Marikana operations in South Africa returned work on Thursday after a hefty pay hike ended a six-week strike, but nearby mines faced more industrial action with workers demanding similar raises*. Shouting "We are reporting for work" in Fanagalo, a pidgin mix of Zulu, English and other African languages, the Lonmin miners were in jubilant mood after securing wage rises of up to 22 percent. Forty-six people died during the wildcat strike at the world's number three producer, and constricted supplies of the precious metal pushed its price ... more »

Cartoons in French weekly fuel Mohammad furor

*(Reuters) - A French magazine ridiculed the Prophet Mohammad on Wednesday by portraying him naked in cartoons, threatening to fuel the anger of Muslims around the world who are already incensed by a California-made video depicting him as a lecherous fool. * The drawings in the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo risked exacerbating a crisis that has seen the storming of U.S. and other Western embassies, the killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and a deadly suicide bombing in Afghanistan. Riot police were deployed to protect the paper's Paris offices after the issue hit news stands. ... more »

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 2 days ago

Islamic states to reopen quest for global blasphemy law

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 2 days ago
*(Reuters) - A leading Islamic organization signaled on Wednesday that it will revive long-standing attempts to make insults against religions an international criminal offence.* The bid follows uproar across the Muslim world over a crude Internet video clip filmed in the United States and cartoons in a French satirical magazine that lampoon the Prophet Mohammad. *The Curiosity rover is making good progress towards its first major science destination on Mars.* The vehicle has now driven 289m (950ft) since its landing on the Red Planet some six weeks ago. It has perhaps another 200m still left to cover to get to a location dubbed Glenelg, where researchers expect to find an interesting juxtaposition of three types of geological terrain. But before it goes any further, the rover will study a dark rock. Measuring about 25cm in height and 40cm at the base, it is not expected to have major science value. Rather, the rock provides an opportunit... more »

Brain's working Memory Tapped

This suddenly allows us to watch a memory been recorded and stored as it happens and before it is acted on to be set up in short term memory or into long term memory. We even have a sense of how the brain tells time or at least experiences the time decay of memory. Hell CMOS! We have been tracking the slow and tortuous advances in our understanding of brain functionality. At some point we will be able to see information formed and recognized and ultimately deployed through the brain. It will be an awesome process. Once well understood, we will also understand how specif... more »

Why Democrats are Abandoning Obama with Rob Taub

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 2 days ago
When I investigate political trends, my focus is always on the numbers. Campaigns matter of course, but they rarely if ever change the position of the die hard support which can be counted on the rationalize the likes of Hitler, let alone a mere failed president. Thus a considered democrat shifting his position does need to be listened to because folks will be making up their minds for much the same reasons unless something spurious is thrown into the game. As it stands, the two candidates are essentially neck and neck as we now enter the true period of voter decisio... more »
