May the name legitimately influence the fate of an application?
*Yes.*
Cosmic Variance promotes something that feminists consider to be science,
namely this paper in PNAS:
Science faculty’s subtle gender biases favor male students
The paper claims that they wrote 127 applications for a lab manager
position, attached a random name of the applicant which could be either
male or female, and found out that the applications with the male name had
better ratings.
The difference was comparable to 2 sigma in the individual cases, not too
strong, and one may have doubts whether the research was done properly.
Moreover, the paper makes it clear that ... more »

When a central tenet of Islam is questioned the results are protests and

Is that the difference between being a temperamental teenager and being a
mature adult?
Imagine the BBC publishing anything that might be seen as detrimental to

Internal Baking Soda Therapy into Clinical Trials
It appears that we are seeing research momentum on the application of
baking soda on specific cancers. This is clearly overdue. The key and
compelling argument is that our modern diet is badly biased into developing
acidity in our body, leading to a whole range of degenerative diseases. As
I recently posted, a combination of maple syrup and baking soda is suitable
for counteracting this effect.
I would like to go a little further. Age related degeneration is generally
excessive in humanity. In the wild, animal reach their past due date and

All this leads to a more uniformly and better watered field and represents
one more compelling argument in favor of no till agriculture.

In the year since DADT repeal have the haters, liars, and nitwits learned anything?

A year ago today, we upheld the fundamental American values of fairness and
equality by finally and formally repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Gay and
lesbian Americans now no longer need to hide who they love in order to
serve the country they love. It is a testament to the professionalism of
our men and women in uniform that this change was implemented in an orderly
manner, preserving unit cohesion, recruitment, retention and military

Mysterious bird-like drone may have popped up in both Iraq and Pakistan, origin still unknown
The quite strange unarmed bird-like drone which was recovered by Pakistani
forces in August of 2011 apparently did not just fly over Pakistan, but was
also apparently spotted by Iraqi insurgents at least two years before
making its way to Pakistan.
One might jump to the conclusion that the drone belongs to the United
States since the U.S. is involved a great deal of drone operations in
Pakistan – which the Pakistani parliament has unanimously declared must
end. It also appears to be similar to some of the drone projects which are
leaning towards designs influenced by birds and inse... more »

The discovery is going viral and giving even more momentum to California's

Mysterious package delivered to family, 10 minutes later police break down door and ransack home

A family in Beach Park, Illinois underwent a strange series of events after
a mysterious package, allegedly containing marijuana, was delivered to
their home.
A mere 10 minutes after the package was delivered, which was not actually
addressed to anyone in the family, police broke down the front door and
confronted the family with guns drawn.
Unfortunately, police raiding the wrong home is far from rare, although I
guess we can be grateful that no one was killed in the botched drug raid which
actually never turned up anything illicit.

Do you want to know what QE3 is going to do to the price of gold and the

During QE3, the Federal Reserve will be introducing 40 billion new dollars

So there will be more dollars chasing roughly the same number of goods and
services, and that means that more inflation is on the way. In an

French satirise religion, English squirm, Muslims riot.
One cannot but admire the French for their refusal to kowtow to the
despotic dictatorship of political correctness. In the satirical magazine, Charlie
Hebdo, the reaction of Muslims to the poorly made parody of Mohammed
Mustafa (the alleged film, Innocence of Muslims), has been ridiculed. The
front cover of yesterday's issue featured an image of a Muslim being pushed

'Must Not Mock'. The cover image referred to the French film by the same

Happening Now: On the Fruits of Unsupported Dogma Over Reason in America
This blog is about my scientific discovery of a great design, that sheds
new light on the many dogmas that have plagued mankind throughout history.
But we are now in a climactic time, when dogmas both ancient and modern are
threatening once again our hard-won civilization. This requires of men and

China: "Hurt 1000 Enemies at the Expense of 800"?

Jogging News - just run my first 10 kilometers
this might be not very long to many of you but for me it's a MAJOR
MILESTONE.
I've just completed my first run equivalent to 10k. I worked out a course
that took me into the hills past Chiswell farm, around the Open University
site on Boars Hill, then back down past Youlbury Scout camp, back home.
Total distance, approx 7 miles. That's round about 11 kilometers. Total
time, 75 minutes.
Went at my own pace, if I started panting, I slowed down until normal
breathing rhythm returned. 11 kilometers in one hour and fifteen minutes.
I'm happy with that.

U.S. Drops to Lowest Rank Ever in Economic Freedom

*The Fraser Institute's annual *Economic Freedom of the World: 2012 Report* highlights
the sharp decline of the American economy as it fell to 19th from the

The report bluntly illustrates the seriousness of the findings:
The U.S. decline is even more startling, given that globally, the average
economic freedom score rose slightly to 6.83 in 2010, the most recent year
available. Global levels of economic freedom reached their lowest level in
nearly three decades with a score of 6.79 in 2009.

demanding similar raises*.
Shouting "We are reporting for work" in Fanagalo, a pidgin mix of Zulu,
English and other African languages, the Lonmin miners were in jubilant
mood after securing wage rises of up to 22 percent.
Forty-six people died during the wildcat strike at the world's number three

Cartoons in French weekly fuel Mohammad furor
*(Reuters) - A French magazine ridiculed the Prophet Mohammad on Wednesday
by portraying him naked in cartoons, threatening to fuel the anger of
Muslims around the world who are already incensed by a California-made
video depicting him as a lecherous fool.
*
The drawings in the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo risked exacerbating a
crisis that has seen the storming of U.S. and other Western embassies, the
killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and a deadly suicide bombing in
Afghanistan.
Riot police were deployed to protect the paper's Paris offices after the
issue hit news stands. ... more »

as civil rights groups prepared to document allegations of racial profiling.
*
Police in the border state with Mexico are now authorized to begin
conducting immigration status checks of anyone they stop for any reason and
suspect of being in the country illegally after a federal judge on Tuesday
lifted an injunction against the provision requiring such checks.

Russia Demands US End Support of Democracy Groups
*MOSCOW — Russia has ordered the United States to end its financial support
for a wide range of pro-democracy, public health and other civil society
programs here, in an aggressive step by the Kremlin to halt what it views
as American meddling in its internal affairs.*
The Kremlin’s provocative decision to end two decades of work in
post-Soviet Russia by the United States Agency for International
Development — with little warning ahead of an Oct. 1 deadline — was
announced on Tuesday by the State Department in Washington. The move stands

largest car market.*
Chinese protesters took to the streets this week in response to an
escalating dispute with Japan over ownership of a group of isles in the
East China Sea, prompting Japanese automakers including Toyota Motor Corp,
Honda Motor Co and Nissan to temporarily halt operations at plants in China.
Lost production volume from those suspensions amounted to aro... more »

Islamic states to reopen quest for global blasphemy law
*(Reuters) - A leading Islamic organization signaled on Wednesday that it
will revive long-standing attempts to make insults against religions an
international criminal offence.*
The bid follows uproar across the Muslim world over a crude Internet video
clip filmed in the United States and cartoons in a French satirical
magazine that lampoon the Prophet Mohammad.
But it appears unlikely to win acceptance from Western countries determined
to resist restrictions on freedom of speech and already concerned about the
repressive effect of blasphemy laws in Muslim countries such as Pakist... more »

happening so fast the Arctic could be ice free in summer “in the next few

The vehicle has now driven 289m (950ft) since its landing on the Red Planet

It has perhaps another 200m still left to cover to get to a location dubbed
Glenelg, where researchers expect to find an interesting juxtaposition of
three types of geological terrain.
But before it goes any further, the rover will study a dark rock.
Measuring about 25cm in height and 40cm at the base, it is not expected to
have major science value.
Rather, the rock provides an opportunit... more »

Brain's working Memory Tapped
This suddenly allows us to watch a memory been recorded and stored as it
happens and before it is acted on to be set up in short term memory or into
long term memory. We even have a sense of how the brain tells time or at
least experiences the time decay of memory. Hell CMOS!
We have been tracking the slow and tortuous advances in our understanding
of brain functionality. At some point we will be able to see information
formed and recognized and ultimately deployed through the brain. It will be
an awesome process. Once well understood, we will also understand how

Why Democrats are Abandoning Obama with Rob Taub
When I investigate political trends, my focus is always on the numbers.
Campaigns matter of course, but they rarely if ever change the position of
the die hard support which can be counted on the rationalize the likes of

shifting his
position does need to be listened to because folks will be making up their
minds for much the same reasons unless something spurious is thrown into
the game.
As it stands, the two candidates are essentially neck and neck as we now
enter the true period of voter decisio... more »
