Obama Sends SOPA Back To Censorship Hell

After Majority Leader Harry Reid’s comments on Meet The Press yesterday where he tried to sell, the Senate companion legislation to SOPA (PIPA) as job saving and job creation, activists should still be on high alert. There were signs in Reid’s comments yesterday that his position was also shifting due to White House opposition. Reid has gone from there being a firm vote on January 24 to hoping that there will be a manager’s amendment available in a week to ten days. Sen. Reid also make remarks saying in effect that he was going to fix the bill.
The problem is that PIPA can’t be fixed. As the White House wrote over the weekend, “New legislation must be narrowly targeted only at sites beyond the reach of current U.S. law, cover activity clearly prohibited under existing U.S. laws, and be effectively tailored, with strong due process and focused on criminal activity. Any provision covering Internet intermediaries such as online advertising networks, payment processors, or search engines must be transparent and designed to prevent overly broad private rights of action that could encourage unjustified litigation that could discourage startup businesses and innovative firms from growing.”

Australia's Katrina Moment

The belatedly "protected" koala is not threatened by flood or drought, but by rapacious land clearing, of which Queensland is the national champion. Each year, according to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, the state effectively destroys 100 million birds, mammals and reptiles.

The land is "cleared" by fire or machinery, often with a heavy chain tied between two bulldozers. The technique was developed by Queensland's most notorious land-clearer, the late Sir Johannes Bjelke-Petersen, the conservative state premier for 19 years, whose self-awarded knighthood was given for "services to parliamentary democracy" such as winning gerrymandered elections with 20 percent of the votes. In 1992, a defamation jury found that Bjelke-Petersen had been bribed "on a large scale and on many occasions." Two of his ministers and his police commissioner were jailed for corruption. Lucrative land became a prize for cronies known as the "white shoe brigade." Brown envelopes of cash were handed over at a five-star hotel recently lapped by floodwaters in the centre of Brisbane.

Last July, the Queensland Labor government sold swathes of the state's forests and plantations to Hancock Queensland Plantations, a subsidiary of a US-based timber multinational. Queensland has many low-lying flood plains on which developers have been allowed to make fortunes selling plots. The victims of the great flood have been mostly poor people, including timber workers and their families. Most could not afford insurance or discovered their policies did not include "types of flood."

According to one of its own reports, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) deliberately stopped insurance companies from agreeing upon a common definition of flood so that "insurers will continue to compete vigorously by product differentiation" by using many definitions of "flood" to specify which risks are covered and which are excluded. "The callousness of this imposed confusion is emblematic of how the Australian elite has treated those ruined by an inland ocean the size of Germany and France combined. Flooding also struck in Brazil and Sri Lanka in December 2010, but the disaster in Australia is far more revealing, for Australia is a "first world" country with advanced technology and communications - and yet tens of thousands of people received no emergency warning. Since the 1980's, Australia has become the model of a social democracy where the cult of the "market" has diminished public services and infrastructure budgets and divided by wealth a society that once boasted the most equitable spread of personal income in the world.

Successive governments have rejected, ignored or suppressed the recommendations of their own experts that, if acted upon, could have saved Brisbane. In 1999, a report commissioned by Brisbane City Council warned of "significantly higher" flooding than in the last great flood in 1974. When the contents were leaked, an alleged cover-up was referred to the Crime and Misconduct Commission, and nothing happened.

Professor Andrew Short, director of the Coastal Studies Unit at Sydney University, compares the Queensland flood with the scandal of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. "[H]aving these floods is no surprise, it's something we have been waiting for," he wrote. "Why were there no levees to protect the low-lying towns? ... Why are major highways and railways still below flood level?"

Apparently, as part of Harry Reid's agreement not to push for filibuster reform, he extracted a promise that Mitch McConnell will not attempt to use the 51-vote "Constitutional Option" to change the rules when he is (presumably) the Majority Leader after the 2012 elections. When it comes to predicting that McConnell will be the Majority Leader, the odds favor it because of the vast disparity in vulnerable seats up for reelection next time around. But, as Tom Harkin (D-IA) notes, such agreements have little force.

The American Embassy in Cairo helped a young dissident attend a US-sponsored summit for activists in New York, while working to keep his identity secret from Egyptian state police.

On his return to Cairo in December 2008, the activist told US diplomats that an alliance of opposition groups had drawn up a plan to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak and install a democratic government in 2011.

David Kato, a Ugandan gay rights campaigner who sued a local newspaper which outed him as homosexual, has been beaten to death, activists have said. Police have confirmed the death and say they have arrested one suspect. Uganda's Rolling Stone newspaper published the photographs of several people it said were gay, including Mr Kato, with the headline "Hang them". US President Barack Obama was quoted as saying he was "deeply saddened" to learn of Mr Kato's death. How it Works: The Case of the Methodist General Conference
The renewal movements and the right-wing Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD) mobilize their African allies to support anti-LGBT actions within the international conferences of their denominations. Before the United Methodist Church's General Conference in 2008, for instance, the IRD prepared the voting materials for African delegates. Joe Wesley Kilpatrick, the former vice president of a Georgia renewal group, and Paul Law, the president of the ministry Appointment Congo, traveled across Africa training delegates to take the "right" side at the conference.[37] Unfortunately, the campaign materials misrepresented the UMC mainline leadership as ignoring the alleged threat of Islam, the persecution of Christian minorities in Africa and rejecting the authority of the Bible.[38] The materials also told Africans who to vote for during the General Conference.
Rev. Dr. Eunice Musa Iliya, the director of Directorate of Evangelism and Stewardship of the United Methodist Church in Nigeria remembered, "I was under extreme pressure from conservatives to vote for conservative candidates. U.S conservatives told us to vote for certain names as a way of saving the Church. We were told to use our "power" to influence the outcome of the General Conference. …the UMC leadership was said to be "practicing occultism, ignoring the expansion of Islam in Africa, rejecting the authority of the Bible and Jesus as well as promoting the homosexual agenda… I voted differently from other African delegates because I knew those claims to be false."[39]
Dr. Iliya further pointed out that this misrepresentation did not end with the 2008 General Convention. U.S. conservative' smear campaign for the next General Conference in 2010 has already begun. "In 2009, Steve Wood of the Confessing Movement came to West Africa to conduct leadership training sessions in different countries including Nigeria…. I was surprised with how much the U.S. church was demonized by Steve. When I tried to ask a question, my Bishop (Jerry Kulah) told me to sit down. I was broken…These guys went to an extent of telling Africans to have nothing to with American liberals and promised Africans scholarships."

Noam Chomsky lectures on nation’s problems
"The guiding principle (for American government) is that as long as the public is under control, everything is fine," he said. "(The traditional argument is) the powerful should gain ends by any possible means. As long as the public is kept under control, public will doesn't matter."
Chomsky referred back to this principle many times throughout his lecture and said it was the base of many of the nation's problems.
He said the principle was a security threat to the U.S. and was at the root of both terror and the huge military budget that is strangling the economy.
"The military budget is half of the deficit," Chomsky said. "The other half is the heavily privatized health care system. We would not have debt and might even have a surplus if we did not have (the health care system)."
Chomsky also discussed terrorism and the post-Sept. 11 United States.
"Bush said terrorists committed crimes because they hate our freedoms," he said.
Contrary to this statement, Chomsky said that Muslims actually hate our policies, not our freedoms.
Chomsky said United States' policies actually benefit Jihadists.
"The U.S. remains Bin Laden's only ally," he said.
Chomsky discussed the United States' support of dictatorships in Egypt, Tunisia, Georgia, Jordan and Colombia. He said this too falls under the "guiding principle."
"A post-Sept. 11 poll showed anger because of U.S. support of dictatorships and blocking democracy," he said.
Though Chomsky said the "guiding principle" was apparent in all aspects of government, he also said it could have very severe consequences.
"The most serious case is in Pakistan where there is a threat of radical Islamists getting a hold of nuclear weapons," he said.
Chomsky said this "guiding principle" is not a recent thing, though.
"Throughout American history, there has been a constant struggle over who should control and who should obey," he said. "The Founding Fathers were ambivalent about democracy."
Chomsky added that James Madison, one of the framers of the Constitution, was concerned that if voters could determine policy, it would challenge the privileged.
"This is why he put the power in the hands of the Senate, whose primary task is to protect the opulent minority against the majority," he said.
Vilifying Frances
There is something curious about the palpable obsession of right-wing pundits with Frances Fox Piven.
The attack was begun about five years ago by David Horowitz, best known for his association with the spurious "Academic Bill of Rights," and his involvement in organizations like Campus Watch that attempt to monitor supposedly subversive professors. Any number of other right-wing luminaries and media pundits soon jumped on board, most notoriously: Glenn Beck. He has depicted her on his immensely popular television show as the source for both the collapse of the American economy and the ultra-radical (re: "communist," "socialist," anarchist," "Marxist," or whatever) policies of the Obama administration. Beck's attack has been ongoing and vicious. Other notable progressives have been targeted by his conspiratorial mindset as well. Another very old friend, Joel Rogers, Professor of Law, Political Science, and Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, who is also a long-time activist, an engaged scholar, and an expert in public policy with impeccable academic credentials. Joel has often been castigated as a "wildly powerful man" and the evil "wizard" secretly plotting the urban energy policy of the Democratic Party from behind the scenes. Nevertheless, there is something special about Beck's treatment of Frances Fox Piven.
In "The Weight of the Poor: A Strategy to End Poverty," which appeared in The Nation (5/2/1966), Frances and Richard called upon poor people to sign up for welfare benefits. Their aim was to foster the conditions that might bring about legislation to provide a guaranteed income. This article is now seen by right-wing media pundits as having caused the state to expand and the budget to bloat. Not deregulation of the financial industry, not corporate mismanagement, not the irresponsible lending of the banks, not capitalist disinvestment or capital flight, not the real estate bubble, not the shift away from industrial production, not the trillions spent on misguided wars, not the looting of social wealth by a miniscule elite, or a host of other structural factors associated with the capitalist production process, but Piven and Cloward's incitement to poor people more than forty- five years ago apparently created the conditions for the financial collapse of 2008. What's more: the insane policy proscriptions by these celebrated academics, which were obviously inspired by their nihilism, apparently set the stage for healthcare, the bail-outs of the banks, and other legislation by President Obama to destroy the capitalist system that elected him to office in favor of a revolution that would introduce socialism or communism.

( Obama a communist ? I wonder what they are smoking. I call him an Authoritarian. That means the super rich have the power and the people don't. That's why corporations now have personal rights and persons ... don't have any. But hey....those were Bush tax policies - that he continued - that have led to supposed shortfall. Not spending more on the military every year than every other nation on the planet does in the aggregate. Oh, no. Not at all. )

The writing's on the wall, as they say...

The documentary "Gasland" about the controversial process of fracking for "natural" gas and oil will be screening on HBO tomorrow at 6:45 AM and 9:45 AM CST.

Today there is virtually no support for helping rebuild Iraq or Afghanistan - no campaigns by large charities, no open doors for Iraqi refugees.

The snipers are everywhere shooting at civilians. People are being kidnapped. Prisoners are being tortured and none were released.
