Washington Bills Would Streamline, Reform State Water Management
Twenty-nine legislators supported bills in the House and Senate that would remove some authority from the Department of Ecology and set up a new water commission.
Councilwoman Watson to fight takeover of Detroit water department
State Rep. Kurt Heise, R-Plymouth, introduced a bill to regionalize the department. Heise seeks to replace the seven-member oversight board with a nine-member panel composed of one representative from Detroit, Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and five elected from 125 communities served by the department.
The proposal follows corruption charges against former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and others alleging contract rigging.
Iorio: New price hikes, broken pipes behind higher water bills
Posted by (SpectacularCatfish) on 01/19/2011 at 08:06 pm.I was the contractor on a new construction project in the Tampa city limits. While the project was under way, the owner received a water bill for over $2500. The water department insisted everything was correct. We had to have a water dept employee come down to the job site and visually confirm the was no water meter installed! Later, after the project was complete, the water department sent a bill for $25,000. Again, the buiding owner approached me concerned. I went down the the department to inquire what would have caused the bill to be so hogh. I was informed the bill was sent to get the owner attention! The only problem was a past due amount of $45. They were using the monthly billing statement to get the owners attention. The volume of water residents are being told are caused by leaks are impossible to believe. There are 15-20 thousand gallons in the typical residential swimming pool. Two to three times that amount of water would completely saturate a typical property. Unbelievable. Has anyone questioned the meter manufacturer?

Climate scientists targeted for fraud
US-based scientist Lee Schipper became aware of the global warming scams in 2009, and receives about one fake invitation each month.
The sums asked for "hotel reservation" are in the range of 200-300 euros per time, he told BBC News.
"My guess is they get a few dozen victims every time - which is not a bad return for essentially no cost," he said.
It is thought that the main targets are researchers in the developing world, whose institutions would be unlikely to have the resources to fund travel to a London conference.
Baroness Warsi says Muslim prejudice seen as normal
"She told the 2009 Conservative Party conference that anti-Muslim hatred had become Britain's last socially acceptable form of bigotry, and claimed in a magazine article last October that taking a pop at the Muslim community in the media sold papers and didn't really matter."
In her speech, she is expected to say the description of Muslims as either moderate or extremist encourages false assumptions.
