10 January - Late Links

TUCSON, AZ - JANUARY 8: People leave notes, c...Image by Getty Images via @daylifeA Union Activist's Call for Change

AFL-CIO leadership, in secret and completely without the consent and support of their rank and file membership, has worked to thwart popular bottom-up organic democracy in the developing world and instead supported elite top-down democracy, friendly to U.S. corporate interests.

“The fear of “communism” by labor leaders--beginning with (Samuel) Gompers, and then of subsequent AFL/AFL-CIO leaders--has been based on these labor leaders’ ideology, and not some rational evaluation of what really was taking place. In other words, these labor officials have tended to believe automatically that anyone who would challenge the status quo (and most especially, capitalism) and sought to fight for the well-being of workers--especially if they took a broader and more militant approach than that of AFL/AFL-CIO leaders--was a communist; these labor officials did it here in the United States, especially in response to the CIO, and they have done it all around the world, particularly in the so-called “developing countries” of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. It has not mattered if that person was a member of a communist party or just a militant trade unionist: a broader vision, militancy, and especially willingness to engage in more than negotiations for collective bargaining agreements, have been long seen as signs of the communists . . .

Millions of Flood Victims in Pakistan Now Face Harsh Winter

The floods impacted 20 million of Pakistan's population of just over 180 million people. As the temperature dips, hundreds of thousands of displaced children and adults are susceptible to pneumonia and other cold-related diseases. According to professor Jamal Raza, Director of the National Institute of Child Health (Pakistan), the number of flood victims with cold-related illnesses could rise to almost double the current count, particularly among children.

Many are living in non-winterized tents and there are shortages of dry firewood and other materials, such as adequate clothing, needed to create warmth. Further, many of the flood-ravaged areas from this year's monsoon remain covered in water and millions of people are still displaced. Many are farmers left with no source of livelihood as their fields are still flooded, and food distribution is difficult to carry out under the circumstances.

The US State Department has failed children and foreign tourists are boycotting the USA

People do not want to be foreign tourists in the USA because their children lose their rights under UN convention when they set foot on US soil.   A foreign child visiting in the USA has no more rights than a foreign child visiting Somalia.

( No kidding. TSA and passports are the least of it. You are automatically 'at fault' in accidents, healthcare is a racket, and policing is 'enthusiastic'. Who needs that sort of Guest Accomodation ? Must be Western Hospitality. Plus should you be so silly to actually plan a trip to the States, you're playing roulette with your vacation plans over the caprice of Homeland Security and their so-called 'No Fly' lists. Visit country estates run by corporations where indefinite detention without charges and torture are available for your edification. I can scarce wait to see the sales brochure ! )

Insurrectionism Timeline Republican Palace, American Embassy Annex, US ...Image via Wikipedia

On June 26, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court embraced the National Rifle Association's contention that the Second Amendment provides individuals with the right to take violent action against our government should it become "tyrannical." The following timeline catalogues incidents of insurrectionist violence (or the promotion of such violence) that have occurred since that decision was issued:

Live Blog: Latest Developments on Arizona Shooting

Marty Kaplan | The "Lock and Load" Rhetoric of American Politics Isn't Just a Metaphor
I'm not saying that putting a bullseye on Arizona Democrat Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' congressional race - as Sarah Palin did - was an explicit or intentional invitation to violence. Nor am I saying that the "Get on Target for Victory" events held by the guy Giffords beat - "Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse ...

Brent Budowsky | Right-wing death threats rise: Republicans should condemn Rush Limbaugh
Rush Limbaugh is now using his radio show to promote hatred and rage with language that could well incite physical violence from some of his listeners. Meanwhile, death threats are rising against Democratic public officials. Abusive calls and threats are made against the homes of prominent Democrats. Extremists call on supporters to bring guns to Washington...

Robert Parry | The Power of False Narrative
As the House of Representatives was engaged in its reading of an abridged version of the U.S. Constitution – leaving out parts like the sections on slavery that would make the Founders look bad – I was reminded again of the power of false narrative, especially at a time when the American Right dominates the U.S. media landscape. Indeed, for ...

People OK with murdering Julian Assange: A new generator that features the calls for the Wikileaks founder’s assassination. Here’s a taste: "“A dead man can’t leak stuff…This guy’s a traitor, he’s treasonous, and he has broken every law of the United States. And I’m not for the death penalty...

David Sirota | The Money Paradox
If there's one thing you can still count on from today's increasingly erratic politics, it is pure unadulterated paradox. In a Washington circus that features as many morons as oxymorons, we have self-described deficit hawks who promote tax cuts, alleged war opponents who back war escalations, and supposed anti-government conservatives who press to expand ...

Brent Budowsky | Joe Stiglitz, Paul Krugman, Simon Johnson, Robert Reich: The liberals were right
The Obama stimulus created jobs, but not enough jobs and not fast enough. The charges from the Republican right are clearly wrong. Even most serious conservative economists who did not like the stimulus agree it created some jobs, and more jobs than would have been created without it. The economic advocates who were the most clearly right, in retrospect...

Ted Rall | Liberal BS on Income Inequality: Some Weasels Are More Equal Than Others
Everyone talks about income inequality, but no one does anything about it. Lately they've been talking more than ever. "The United States is the rich country with the most skewed income distribution, " Eduardo Porter asserts in his upcoming book "The Price of Everything: Solving the Mystery of Why We Pay What We Do." Porter continues: "According to ...

During the Bush administration's "war on terror", it was important to dehumanise the men held at Guantánamo, to give life to the myth that the prison held "the worst of the worst" terrorists, picked up on the battle...

Donna Smith | Will Vermont’s Babies Have a Better Chance?
As Peter Shumlin was officially sworn in as governor of Vermont, there was and is great hope that at least in one state we may see passage and implementation of a truly universal, single-payer healthcare system. From Shumlin's January 6, 2011,innaugral address: "The rising cost of healthcare for Vermont's middle class and small businesses provides...

Contrails seen from space: the fact that contrails now persist as long as they do is in itself a sign of something amiss, but it is NOT evidence that these are "chemtrails."
