If I worked on the railroads, I'd vote for a strike, too
All the verbal diarrhea spouted by politicians, railroad business executives and others about how a rail strike would be disastrous for the USA ignores a simple reality. Rail staff - particularly engineers and conductors - are so over-stressed, over-worked and under-appreciated that I'm astonished they've put up with it for this long. They need and deserve much better working conditions, but the railroads are refusing to provide them - so let them strike, say I. This is the first I have ever heard of this port town and it was certainly important to a marine power such as Venice. This reminds us that marine powers need friendly ports to properly extend and protect their naval force. Historians should actually map these semi alliances and measure their economic impact. How a Giant Eagle Once Came to Dominate New Zealand
I think we need to rethink giantism. It appears if conditions favor it giantism arises rather swiftly. And seriously, humanity is now growing much bigger because no one is going hungry. Thus a very small raptor. or better yet a lot of them grew rapidly in size to reach the scale of the Haast Eagle. This also explains the possible maladaption of wing span to weight. We Subsidize the Wrong Kind of Agriculture
Of course we do and we do not make it fair either by making subsidies avaiable across the whole industry. Worse is that it has been distorted for generations from when there have been good reason for temporary subsidies to today when they are hardwired into the economics. If you must subsidize do it with interest costs and low fee lending in order to prevent gaming. Once a crop is subsidized, you have a negative incentive against changing anything. Cheap money expnads supply and drives prices down from the excess. Supply managementt also works far better than understood. The... read more
