AUSTIN, Texas — Using newly available technology, a University of Texas seismologist tracking small earthquakes in the Barnett Shale play area of North Texas has found a correlation between geological disturbances and the sort of injection wells that are associated with hydraulic fracturing, according to research appearing this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

New corn varieties are emerging with larger roots for gathering water in a drought. Someday, the plants may even be able to "resurrect" themselves after a long dry spell, recovering quickly when rain returns.

The latest move by politicians to limit or ban the sale of genetically modified fish has been stymied. A U.S. Senate bill, which would have prohibited the sale of genetically engineered salmon unless the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration could find the fish would cause no significant environmental harm, was withdrawn from the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee late last week.

What’s in a dispersant? Considered a trade secret, at first the company that makes it, Nalco, of Naperville, Ill., didn’t reveal the ingredients of COREXIT 9500 and 9527. Then in June, the EPA and Nalco both released the ingredient list fo
r COREXIT 9500 in response to widespread public concern. It contains butanedioic acid, a wetting agent in cosmetics, sorbitan, found in everything from baby bath to food, and petroleum distillates in varying proportions — and it decomposes almost entirely in 28 days. “All six (ingredients) are used in day-to-day life —in mouthwash, toothpaste, ice cream, pickles,” Nalco’s chemist, Mani Ramesh, said. “We believe COREXIT 9500 is very safe.” Yet, those solvents — petroleum distillates — are also known animal carcinogens. In England, they conducted the “Limpet Test” using that dispersant. It failed, killing the limpets. Now the United Kingdom won’t allow its use.

The lawsuit seeks to compel the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to issue a rule on chemical oil dispersants. EPA’s current rules, which during the 2010 Gulf oil disaster failed to ensure that dispersants would be used safely, do not fulfill the requirements mandated by the Clean Water Act, according to press release issued by Cook Inletkeeper.
Reefs have been created from parts of oil and gas platforms, Liberty ships, and concrete and other materials to provide habitat for marine life. Many scientists believe such structures actually increase the productivity of a marine ecosystem, meaning there are more fish in the sea than there would be without them, but there isn’t much science to prove this.
