The Chatter Podcast: Private Sector Intelligence with Lewis Sage-Passant
When the term "intelligence" comes up regarding an organization, most of us immediately think of government institutions. And there's a good reason for that; nation-states have become the centers of the most prominent intelligence collection, analysis, and direct action. But that's far from the whole story. Increasingly, corporations are developing intelligence units of their own to uncover and assess threats to their personnel and facilities, analyze geopolitical and environmental risks that might affect their business prospects, and even take actions traditionally associated wi... read more

Medical Device Security Offers Proving Ground for Cybersecurity Action
United States House of Representatives (Source: Wikimedia/Office of Speaker Paul Ryan) Legislation approved on June 8 by the U.S. House of Representatives to address the cybersecurity of medical devices may offer a good model for a sector-by-sector approach to cybersecurity regulation. The bill illustrates the complexities and balancing act required of regulatory efforts in this space. In particular, the measure suggests a way to solve a conundrum at the center of cybersecurity policy: how to translate a general statutory or common law mandate to provide “reasonable” security int... read more

What Do Transparency and Data Sharing Really Mean?
Social media analytics (Edar, https://pixabay.com/images/id-586944/; Pixabay license free for commercial use) Transparency reporting and data sharing are hot topics. Both are seen as holy grails to unlock the mysteries of the information environment. And both are often conflated with each other. This lack of clarity in definitions makes it challenging to draft much-need regulation to help drive either concept forward in practice. As regulations like the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Platform Accountability and Transparency Act (PATA) in the United States move forward, pe... read more

Western Foreign Policy Created Ukraine Crisis, is Creating Crisis with China
*June 9, 2022* (Brian Berletic - New Eastern Outlook) - Two recent events, both overshadowed by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, help illustrate how the same problematic aspects of Western foreign policy driving the Ukrainian conflict are hard at work in provoking conflict with yet another global power, China. Speculations crash, layoffs boost unemployment, consumers trim debt and enterprises work off excess inventory. *2. High energy prices* ... The terrible consequences of Democrat climate policies
Patrick Hynes: Republicans have wisely decided to go on the offensive when it comes to climate change. Last week, Rep. A derecho hits Ottawa
Most of us have by now heard of a "derecho" - a straight-line wind storm that can be as damaging as a tornado or hurricane. I've been caught in a few hurricanes (Katrina 2005, Gustav and Ike in 2008, and a few others) and that derecho looked just about as bad, albeit not as long-lived. I'm glad I wasn't there.
