The Struggle For What’s EssentialJust over two years ago when lockdowns were being declared like dominoes around the world, there was a brief moment when the COVID-19 pandemic seemed to hold the potential for much-needed reflection. Could it lead to a reversal away from the profit-driven ecological and socio-economic dead end we’ve been propelling toward? Arundhati Roy’s call to critical reflection was published in early April 2020. At the time, she was observing the early evidence, on one hand, of the devastating toll of the pandemic as a result of extraordinary inequality, the privatized health care system, and... read more

Let Them Eat (Jubilee) CakeWhen Marie Antoinette discovered her subjects were facing a bread shortage and starvation in around 1789, due to multiple poor crop harvests and rodent infestations, she apparently exclaimed ‘let them eat cake!’ Her hereditary privilege meant she had no grasp of the severity of their suffering, or the fact that cake was much more expensive than bread to produce. Inequality during this period, immediately before the French revolution, was very high. "The Only Absolute...""Never perceive anything as being inevitable or predestined. The only absolute is uncertainty." - Lionel Suggs "Humans may crave absolute certainty; they may aspire to it; they may pretend, as partisans of certain religions do, to have attained it. I got out of class about 20 minutes early on the day of the sniper attack and had cleared the Mall and was back at my apartment when the shooting began. The rifle being used was not what the left likes to call an "assault weapon." What Whitman had going for him was a perch at the top of the campus library tower that made it difficult for the police to get to him. Eventually, they did in much the same way that Border Patrol officers did by assaulting his nest. BTW, It was one of the last c... read more

Sunday morning musicLast week I once again came across Eugene Ormandy's splendid rendition of Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture". In this 1970 recording, he conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra, accompanied by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, with cannon fire provided by the Valley Forge Military Academy Band. It's long been one of my favorite recordings of this piece. I think I've put it up on this blog before, but it's so good I don't mind a redux, and I'm sure you won't either. For a 52-year-old rendition, it's held its own remarkably well in comparison to modern digital recordings. Peter read more

California appeals court rebuffs Soros backed DAWashington Examiner: As a matter of both law and good policy, the California State Court of Appeals well served the public by ruling on Thursday that left-wing Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon actually must do his job. Gascon, one of a bevy of district attorneys elected with financial support from radical financier George Soros or his affiliates, is turning Los Angeles into a crime-infested danger zone, with homicides at a 15-year high. This matches the experience of most Soros DAs and those who adopt similar policies, with murder rates or violent crime rates likewise ... read more

Ideas Suffer the Casualty of Casualnessby Jim McCarthy Skilled polemicists and rhetoricians (perhaps even unskilled) can present material in a seemingly unbiased way even while intentionally distorting in. A recent Bacon’s Rebellion article bemoaned the assertion of Fairfax County Commonwealth Attorney Steve Descano in a … Continue reading → read more

A forgotten revolutionary: Thomas Spence on saving the commonsThomas Spence (1750-1814) is all but forgotten today, but at the time of the French Revolution he was one of the best-known thinkers and activists in the left-wing of the radical democratic movement in England. In Red Round Globe Hot Burning, Peter Linebaugh describes him as “the most consistent among the common communists of the 1790s.” His influence continued after his death: in 1817, Parliament banned political clubs that supported his views, making Spenceanism the only political ideology ever banned by name in England. read more

Ukraine Beyond Day 100 – Breaking Resistance, Deep Operation, A New CountryThe Ukrainian army has moved seven brigades of its Territorial Defense Forces from the west into the area east of the Dnieper. If these were fully maned each will have had some 3,000 soldiers. That are a lot of troops but they are pure infantry without heavy weapons and with extremely little training. Col. Reisner also showed a collection of 15 videos in which members of such and other units describe hopeless situations, declare a retreat or call out their commanders for neglect. read more

GunDebate.caSpeaking of gun violence, today I saw a bumper sticker advertising GunDebate.ca. It's an excellent website that cites the facts not the misinformation. In the picture above we see a cache of illegal handguns that were smuggled into Canada the from the US. These are unregistered. That's how gang bangers get their guns. No one uses a registered gun to commit a crime. If I sell a registered gun to a gang banger it gets traced back to me. Even if they file off the serial number. The police still have a record of me owning it. If I sold it illegally, they simply ask me, where is it? You... read more

US to Send Ukraine its "Gray Eagle" Drones - Will it make a Difference?*June 5, 2022* (The New Atlas) - The US has announced it will be sending General Atomics “Gray Eagle” drones - similar to the infamous “Predator” drone - to Ukraine. However, the US is only initially sending 4 drones and the Gray Eagle is comparable to Ukraine’s existing (or perhaps previously existing) Bayraktar TB2 drones produced by Turkey. The Gray Eagle drones will face the same limitations Ukraine’s Bayraktar drones faced, providing no means to change the course of the conflict, but almost certainly making General Atomics money alongside other US arms manufacturers, namely... read more

ICYMI: Wrapping Up The Year Edition (6/5)This week our local school districts will wrap up the year, so it's all graduations and packing up rooms and the rest of those things I no longer do. I always feel extra retired this time of year, for better or worse. But one thing I know for sure--every teacher I know (including the CMO (Chief Marital Officer) here at the Institute is really very ready for a break from what has turned out to be a very hard year. So three cheers for that. Meanwhile, here's your reading list for the week. *It's okay not to have the words* Jose Luis Vilson reflects on the same ugly mess we've all be... read more
