Hillary in Durham's cross hairs?

If Droughts Are Predictable Because They Self-Propagate, Not Planning For Them Is Irresponsible
Everyone knows droughts are bad. They increase risk of wildfires and damage life in the affected region. They are not always predictable, when I lived in Pennsylvania in the early 1990s there was a drought with no known mechanism involved, but they are often cyclical, which makes them at least broadly predictable. The Dry 2 Dry program at Ghent University believes droughts are not only predictable and cyclical, they can propagate in a kind of feedback loop; instead of being local, evaporated water is moved to other areas, so less of it is taking drought with them. read more read more

The religious right had a great day in the Supreme Court
[image: Anti-Abortion Organizations Hold Candlelight Vigil Outside Supreme Court] A woman raises her hands in prayer outside of the Supreme Court building. | Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images The justices may take a big bite out of the First Amendment’s establishment clause, or they might take a simply enormous bite out of it. The best-case scenario for supporters of church/state separation, after the Supreme Court’s oral argument in *Kennedy v. The French election is over, but the country’s politics are still broken
[image: A large screen at the foot of the Eiffel Tower shows President Macron to a crowd of people.] Incumbent President Emmanuel Macron’s victory on Sunday was less resounding than his initial election in 2017. | Aurelien Meunier/Getty Images Questions linger after Macron bested Le Pen a second time, albeit by a less impressive margin than in 2017. France’s second-round presidential election on Sunday, a contest between incumbent center-right Emmanuel Macron and far-right challenger Marine Le Pen, ended with a clear Macron victory — but not the overwhelming victory he had in the... read more

On set identities
While there's been some attention paid to Environics' polling on provincial identity politics, little of it seems to have noted just how little public interest there is in a highly concerted effort to build up a Saskatchewan sovereigntist movement. After all, Scott Moe's Saskatchewan Party has gone far out of its way (backed of course by big Alberta oil money) to spend time demanding more power as a "nation within a nation", rather than using the authority it has to keep Saskatchewan's people safe and healthy. And much of its excuse for doing so is the presence of other theoretical... read more
