The Chatter Podcast: Spy Satire with Alex Finley
No one understands the surreal aspects of a large, long-established bureaucracy like one who has worked in it. And few have written satire about the particular bureaucracy known as the Central Intelligence Agency like former intelligence officer, prominent yacht-watcher, and book author Alex Finley. For this episode, Shane Harris joined David Priess to speak jointly with Finley about her career in the CIA's Directorate of Operations (which became the National Clandestine Service during her tenure there), her keen observation and analysis of Russian oligarchs' mega-yachts (which b... read more

The US Cries About War Crimes While Imprisoning A Journalist For Exposing Its War Crimes
[image: undefined] In what his lawyers have described as a “brief but significant moment in the case,” a British magistrates' court has signed off on Julian Assange's extradition to the United States, bringing the WikiLeaks founder one step closer to a US trial under the Espionage Act which threatens press freedoms worldwide. The extradition case now goes to UK Home Secretary Priti Patel for approval, which will likely be forthcoming as Patel is a reliably loyal empire manager. After that point, Assange's legal team will be able to launch an appeal. This is happening at the same ... read more

Former Intelligence Officials, Citing Russia, Say Big Tech Monopoly Power is Vital to National Security
[image: undefined] A group of former intelligence and national security officials on Monday issued a jointly signed letter warning that pending legislative attempts to restrict or break up the power of Big Tech monopolies — Facebook, Google, and Amazon — would jeopardize national security because, they argue, their centralized censorship power is crucial to advancing US foreign policy. The majority of this letter is devoted to repeatedly invoking the grave threat allegedly posed to the US by Russia as illustrated by the invasion of Ukraine, and it repeatedly points to the dangers of... read more

*"The Prophet: On Good and Evil "* "Of the good in you I can speak, but not of the evil. For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst? Verily when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark caves, and when it thirsts it drinks even of dead waters. You are good when you are one with yourself. Yet when you are not one with yourself you are not evil. For a divided house is not a den of thieves; it is only a divided house. And a ship without rudder may wander aimlessly among perilous isles yet sink not to the bottom. You are good when you strive to give of yourself. Yet yo... read more

One Good Thing: Have you heard of this Shakespeare guy? Pretty good!
Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in Baz Luhrmann’s *Romeo + Juliet* (1996). | 20th Century Fox Juliet and her Romeo are dead, but Romeo and Juliet lives forever. Friends, I come before you today to address an injustice. For too long have we, as a culture, allowed ourselves to take *Romeo and Juliet* for granted. For too long have we sneered at it as adolescent and mawkish when compared to brooding *Hamlet* or tragic *Lear*! For too long have we tolerated those pedants who like to smugly opine that if you think *Romeo and Juliet* is romantic, you’re reading it wrong! For too long... read more

How To Make $400,000 By Being An A**hat; And, Are You One Of The Chosen?
I had just read about the philosophy professor who claimed it was against his religion to refer to a trans woman as she/her, and then sued after he was disciplined. The college just settled for $400,000. This isn't the first case where an evangelical Christian has claimed that their religion prohibited basic human decency and manners. And that got me thinking. I then went for a walk and went face-first into a spiderweb and had an epiphany. An enlightenment, if you will. A new religion. Maybe you'll want to join it. And before you say, hey, you can't just pull a religion out of a ... read more

Companies lose your data and then nothing happens
[image: Padlocks on a fence.] Your personal information is probably all over the internet and no one is accountable. | Grant Faint via Getty Images Data breaches are everywhere and consequences are ??? At this point, it’s hard not to imagine that at least some of your personal information isn’t for sale in some dark corner of the internet. After all, data breaches are happening constantly. Companies suck up customers’ details and then, try as they might — and let’s assume they really try — declare that it’s been leaked or hacked. You know the drill; the subsequent breach announcem... read more

Shanghai’s zero Covid nightmare

In late March, Chinese authorities warned the residents of Shanghai that they would soon be trapped in their homes. They were given little time to prepare provisions for what they were told would be a few days trapped at home to combat the sp... read more

Does Democrats’ support for unions extend to their own employees?
Christina Animashaun/Vox The fight for a union in Congress, explained. House Democrats are facing a telling question: How committed are they to unions when it’s their own employees who want one? At the moment, there’s no clear answer. In February, top Democrats — including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer — declared their full-throated support for a unionization effort among congressional staffers. Two months later, however, a resolution that would authorize the effort is stalled. Two Democratic aides, who declined to comment on the record because ... read more

Russia accused of destroying food warehouses in Ukraine city
According to the Washington Examiner: Russian forces have destroyed all the food stocks in one Ukrainian city as their offensive in the eastern part of the country escalates, according to a local official. The governor of the Luhansk region in Donbas said on Thursday that all food warehouses in the city of Sievierodonetsk have been leveled by Russian troops. Residents in the city who have not evacuated will now only be able to receive food through humanitarian aid, according to Luhansk's governor, which could be difficult to obtain given Russia's continued bombardment of the reg... read more

You were there in the beginning you heard the story, you heard the merciless and tender words telling you where you had to go. Exile is never easy and the journey itself leaves a bitter taste. But then, when you heard that voice, you had to go. You couldn't sit by the fire, you couldn't live so close to the live flame of that compassion you had to go out in the world and make it your own so you could come back with that flame in your voice, saying listen... this warmth, this unbea... read more

"A Perpetual Illusion..."
"Human life is thus only a perpetual illusion; men deceive and flatter each other. No one speaks of us in our presence as he does of us in our absence. Human society is founded on mutual deceit; few friendships would endure if each knew what his friend said of him in his absence, although he then spoke in sincerity and without passion. Man is then only disguise, falsehood, and hypocrisy, both in himself and in regard to others. He does not wish any one to tell him the truth; he avoids telling it to others, and all these dispositions, so removed from justice and reason, have a natura... read more

Russia sees minor advances in Ukraine east offfensive
ISW reports that the Russians activity in the Donbast region has been minor with fits and starts. They have so far not taken advantage of the open ground in the area for significant advances. The Russians have so far in this war shown little talent for mechanized operations. They tend to stick to the roads which makes it easier for the Ukraine fighters to pick them off. One indicator of how understaffed the Russians have become in the Ukraine war is they are threatening to conscript Ukraine citizens in the region the are now trying to control. That looks like a desperate move. read more

The "Deep State" is in bed with "Deep Tech". Here's proof.
Glenn Greenwald points out that the alliance between US intelligence organizations and Big Tech - or, as I prefer to call it, between the "Deep State" and "Deep Tech", because (as Sundance has argued in great detail) the intelligence organizations have made themselves into a fourth branch of government - is now clear to see. A group of former intelligence and national security officials on Monday issued a jointly signed letter warning that pending legislative attempts to restrict or break up the power of Big Tech monopolies — Facebook, Google, and Amazon — would jeopardize nat... read more
