Dangers Posed by Evidentiary Software—and What to Do About It
(Flickr/jbstafford, https://flic.kr/p/9WgUFd; CC BY-NC-ND 2.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/) It's well known the code is buggy; that's why software updates for anything from apps to operating systems are now the norm. But if the public understands this, the courts have not followed suit. In the UK, there was a major long-running scandal involving the Post Office Limited (POL)—not to be confused with the government-owned Royal Mail, which delivers the mail—and its many-year pursuit of "subpostmasters" whom it accused of theft. United Protest against the 2022 Beijing Olympics
Today there was a protest in Vancouver which was part of a Global Day of Action calling for an Intenational boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The Uyghurs, Tibetans and Hong Kongers were all well represented. They were all speaking out against the atrocities of Communist China. One protester compared the Beijing Olympics in 2022 with the 1936 Olympics that Adloff Hitler hosted. It is a fitting comparison. We can do better. One banner contained three portraits of a multitude of innocent Uyghurs held captive in Communist prison camps in China Hong Kong's last remaining p... read more
Get Ready: Biden’s Child Tax Credit Stimulus Checks are Only 3 Weeks Away
*Rachel Bucchino* *Child Tax Credit, * The IRS recently reported that it would start sending out the credit on a monthly basis to eligible families, with the first payment expected to be issued on July 15. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *The IRS and Treasury Department also launched an online tool this week for low-income families who qualify for the child tax credit but don’t file taxes since they don’t make enough income to file. President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package passed in March boosted the child tax credit from $2,000 to as much as $3,600 for ... read more
America's Concorde Ended in Supersonic Failure
*Caleb Larson* *Supersonic Jets, Americas* A solution was never found to supersonic flight's "loud boom" problem. *Here's What You Need to Know*: Supersonic transport was not as revolutionary as had originally been envisioned. The 1960s were a heady time for air transportation. Not only were jet airliners all the rage—so too were SSTs, or supersonic transports. The Soviet Union had been the first to enter into the supersonic jet airliner age with their massive—and problematic—Tu-144 design. The French-Anglo Concorde project would follow just a few months later, and benefited from... read more
Stimulus Check Denied: Parents Can Opt Out of Child Tax Credit Payments
*Ethen Kim Lieser* *economy, Americas* Parents are wondering if they must repay the money—a $250 or a $300 payment per child each month through the end of the year—to the IRS come tax time next year. Earlier this week, the Internal Revenue Service launched two new online tools that are designed to assist eligible families with managing and monitoring the recurring monthly payments from the expanded child tax credits that were approved under President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. The first one is called the Child Tax Credit Eligibility Assistant, and this wi... read more
Has America's F-117 Nighthawk Found Life After Retirement?
*Caleb Larson* *F-117 Nighthawk, Americas* Although there are likely no plans for the stealth jet to reenter active service, its current mission is likely as a trainer/tester platform. *Here's What You Need to Know*: Despite a Congressionally-approved destruction mandate, few F-117s appear to be resting in boneyards. In a March 2020 Instagram post, an aviation enthusiast posted several photos of an F-117 flying in Star Wars Canyon in California. The Child Stimulus Check Is Coming, But Should You Accept It?
*Trevor Filseth* *Child Tax Credit, * If you make less than $75,000 per year as a single parent, or if you and your partner together make less than $150,000 per year, you are eligible for the checks. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Right now, all eligible families are automatically signed up to receive the checks. However, it is possible that this might not appeal to you – for instance, if you are expecting another child later in 2021 and want to avoid the hassle of further paperwork, or are hoping to save up for a large expense next summer. Russia Tried To Build Its Own Concorde Jet. It Didn't Go as Planned.
*Caleb Larson* *Concorde, Eurasia* Despite being headed by the venerable Tupolev design bureau, the project was an unmitigated disaster. *Here's What You Need to Know*: The Tu-144 was impressive, but ended in failure. The Soviet-built Tu-144 actually flew before its supersonic rival Concorde, though it had a number of flaws inherent to the design that severely limited its usefulness. Part of the problem with the Tu-144 was its weight. Not only was it heavier than the Concorde—by around 20 tons, or 40,000 pounds—it was longer too, by about 12 feet. The Tu-144’s extra weight stem... read more

During that war, the MG 3’s predecessor, the MG 42, struck terror into the hearts of the Allies. Known informally as “Hitler’s Buzzsaw” the MG 42 was renowned for its blisteringly high rate of fire, which clocked in at 1,200 to 1,500 rounds per minute. How Biden Helped Hardliner Raisi Win Iran Election
It was common knowledge that a U.S. failure to rejoin the Iran nuclear deal (known as the JCPOA) before Iran’s June presidential election would help conservative hard-liners to win the election. Raisi has a record of brutally cracking down on government opponents and his election is a severe blow to Iranians struggling for a more liberal, open society.
