How the Glock 19 Forever Changed the Global Gun Market
*Charlie Gao*
*Guns, World*
The Glock 19 is one of the most popular guns on the planet.
*Here's What You Need To Remember: *While all of these trends cannot be
solely attributed to the Glock 19, it’s probably fair to attribute some
responsibility to it. As the “gold standard” of what a modern pistol should
be, most firearm designers are acutely aware of what it does well and what
it does poorly.
The Glock 19 is one of the most popular guns on the planet. Police,
militaries, and paramilitaries on almost every continent carry them daily.
As a result, the Glock 19’s design has heav... read more

USS Cowpens: The Most Cursed Warship in the U.S. Navy?
*David Axe*
*U.S. Navy, Americas*
Fatal accidents and near-disasters at sea have plagued the ship.
*Here's What You Need to Know*: In naval tradition there are happy ships
and unhappy ones.
There are 21 other vessels outwardly identical to the U.S. Navy
guided-missile cruiser USS *Cowpens*. But there are no vessels just like
*Cowpens*.
For *Cowpens *is cursed. Fatal accidents. Near-disasters at sea. And a
peculiar hex that seems to almost guarantee that her skippers ignominiously
will end their careers aboard the troubled ship.

More Capacity, More Power: The Glock 20 Is a Killer
*Mark Episkopos*
*Guns, *
Seeking to maintain their foothold in the U.S. market, Glock rushed to
release the Glock 20 in 1991 shortly after the FBI’s official adoption of
the 10mm caliber.
*Here's What You Need to Know*: What the Glock 20 sacrifices in size, it
makes up for with raw performance. The Glock 20 combines the impressive
stopping power of the 10mm caliber with a 15-round capacity magazine that’s
capable of accommodating a wide range of ammunition, all within the
reliable and ergonomically friendly frame that is a trademark of the Glock
brand.

Do you remember the time when self-driving cars were upon us?
Do you remember the time when self-driving cars were upon us? It was almost
a decade ago when the Autonomous Vehicle division at Google (now Waymo)
promised a world where people would be chauffeured around by self-driving
robot cars.
We were shown computer renderings of futuristic cities filled with
autonomous robot taxis and luxurious concept vehicles where riders could
rest on fully reclining seats while watching high-resolution TVs.
That was what they promised us. As it turn... read more

The Smith & Wesson 329PD Revolver Feels Like Shooting Air
*Kyle Mizokami*
*Guns, *
The Smith & Wesson Model 329PD takes technology the company pioneered for
smaller revolvers and ports it to large frame, large caliber revolvers.
*Here's What You Need to Remember: *A handgun’s weight is typically a
double-edged sword: while a lighter handgun is typically more comfortable
to carry, a heavier handgun absorbs recoil better, sparing the user much of
the ensuing kick. This is particularly true in heavier caliber revolvers.
One of America’s oldest gun companies has pushed the limits of
technological innovation to create the lightest large-cali... read more

Sunday morning music
I'm obliged to Kim du Toit, a fellow expatriate South African who, like me,
is now an American citizen. A couple of days ago he mentioned on his blog
the Genesis hit "Firth of Fifth", from their fifth studio album "Selling
England by the Pound". He first linked to a version of the song by former
Genesis lead guitarist Steve Hackett, then to an analysis of the piece by a
composer in the classical music tradition. I found both engrossing.
Genesis was, of course, a progressive rock group from the outset.
Classical music influences are evident in a great deal of their music.

Government Report: The U.S. Marine Corps Is Losing Its Edge
*Michael Peck*
*U.S. Marine Corps, Americas*
A lack of training is to blame.
*Here's What You Need to Know*: The U.S. military has too many commitments
and not enough resources.
The U.S. Marine Corps is arguably the best amphibious-warfare force in the
world. But a 2017 Government Accountability Office report suggests that
lack of training may be eroding the marines’ amphibious capabilities.
The problem isn’t with the marine amphibious units deployed at sea, which
would be at the forefront of the fighting should war erupt in Korea or the South
China Sea. The issue is that relent... read more

Could Israel Replicate Its Syrian Military Strategy in Gaza?
*Michael Makovsky*
*Israel, Middle East*
Even if successfully executed with little cost, adopting the “campaign
between the wars” to Gaza won’t solve Israel’s Gaza problem—but it could
lead to longer intervals between wars, reducing bloodshed and insecurity in
Israel and in Gaza, and that alone would offer a significant advance.
When the new Israeli prime minister, Naftali Bennett, addressed his new
“change” cabinet this week, he said Israel is “at the outset of new days.”
That’s immediately clear about the country’s politics, but for Israel to
make progress in Gaza, after the la... read more

The negative environmental impact of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin has
been widely covered in the press in recent weeks and months, and their

UN believes that blockchain, the technology lying behind these online
currencies, could be of great benefit to those fighting the climate crisis,
