"Dogs and Whales Enjoy Mysterious Connection"

*"Dogs and Whales Enjoy Mysterious Connection"* by Jennifer Viegas "Many animal experts believe that a primitive communication system unites virtually all mammals. Beyond that, a special connection appears to exist between dogs and whales. Check out this footage, for example, of a dog interacting with a killer whale. The orca, which could have easily grabbed the dog for dinner, appears to be displaying submissive, playful behaviors, such as exposing its underside to the dog. Luna the orca socializes with dog. Luna/L98 was a male Southern resident (fish eating) orca who died March ... more »

Neoliberalism's War on Youth

This is as good a synopsis of the ideological scourge of neoliberalism that I've heard, particularly as it pertains to youth. Henry Giroux on RT's *Watching the Hawks*: Henry also has a hard-hitting piece up on Tikkun that's well worth a read. As editor Michael Lerner writes in his intro to the essay, *...Our Network of Spiritual Progressives’ championing of a Global Marshall Plan seems suddenly “unrealistic” so that even Bernie Sanders did not mention it or even acknowledge the potential power of countering the strategy of domination and militarism with a strategy of generosity.... more »

Composers Behaving Badly

Way Way Up at Fort McMurray Adventures - 2 hours ago
One of the things that has always fascinated me as I've delved further in to classical music and history is the disconnect between peoples' conceptions of classical music and the composers who wrote it and reality. To a certain degree, most people's ideas of the concert hall as being all staid and austere, where you dressed to the nines, sat board-stiff in your seat (and heaven help you if you dared clap between the movements of a symphony or a concerto) are just a stereotype. But I thought I'd focus more on composers themselves. Behind some of that saintly music of the church,... more »

*"Probing The Soul”* by Chet Raymo “More than three centuries ago, Pascal said: "Man considering himself is the great prodigy of nature. For he cannot conceive what his body is, even less what his spirit is, and least of all how body can be united with spirit." Pascal lived at the dawn of the scientific era, but his words still ring true. We have sent spacecraft to the planets. We have listened to signals from the dawn of time. We have unraveled the mystery of starlight. We can even conceive what the body is. But the deeper human mystery remains: What is the spirit, and how is it u... more »

September 24: No. No word.

No, there's still no word about how we're being robbed of more than forty billion dollars a year by some of our better families. In particular, there's not a word from Justin Trudeau or Dominic Leblanc or Brian Gallant. And not even a mention that our federal minister of finance is one of the better people named. Can you imagine what would happen if one of us told the minister that we were going to hide $40 from taxation? No, our money is essential because Dominic Leblanc and his wife need it to entertain the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for a weeked with full military honours. 21... more »

I don't watch Question Time these days because I always seem to be asleep by 10:45. Of course I could catch up next day. I did so yesterday out of mild curiosity after noticing that Question Time was to have an unusually balanced panel. (Having dropped a controversial guest at the last minute and brought in Caroline Lucas instead.) The only thing I've got to say about it is that there was strange and wonderful diversity-of-audience as well. A genuine mixture. It was heartwarming to see Caroline Lucas getting a cool response and Jacob Rees-Mogg a comparatively warm one. He’s a bit ... more »

US Used 90s UN Weapons Inspectors To Spy On Iraq

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 13 hours ago
After the Gulf War when the United Nations ordered inspectors into Iraq to destroy its weapons of mass destruction, missile and nuclear programs Saddam would often demand that the U.S. and British members of the teams be removed. Baghdad accused those people of being spies for their respective governments. As it turned out the Americans were using the inspections to collect intelligence on Iraq. For example, the U.S. installed eavesdropping devices into the U.N. communication network to tap into the Iraqi military. Pesticide Industry Secret Study Shows Neonics Kills Bees

Tests conducted by agrochemical giants Syngenta and Bayer showed that their own pesticides caused severe harm to bees. Yet they kept their findings secret and did not make them public. Documents obtained by Greenpeace reveal that the agrochemical industry has a disregard for the environmental and food security concerns, and that regulators are no help. In the 1930s Tesla reportedly invented a particle beam weapon that some, ironically, ...more »

Heading to DC for Peace Conference

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 23 hours ago
I leave very early in the morning for Washington DC to attend and speak at this peace conference being held at American University. I will talk about Ukraine and South Korea on Sunday at 10:00 am. On Monday morning there will be a protest at the Pentagon that I will join as well. You can see the conference schedule *here*

After the earthquake in 2010 nearly $10 billion dollars of foreign aid was pledged to rebuild Haiti. Vikram Gandhi went to see just how that money is being put to use.

Palestine in America

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 23 hours ago
*National Guard soldiers stand among protesters during another night of protests over the police shooting of Keith Scott in Charlotte, North Carolina, Sept. 22, 2016. * It happens practically every day now. Cops shoot another black person down in the streets of America. It's a war on the poor - the unwanted, the superfluous populations. I've long asked - after all the wars and killing of innocent people around the world by the US, what makes you think we here in America are so special that they won't at some point do the same to us? Well it is happening now - and first they co... more »

Different View on the Syria War

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 23 hours ago
US Peace Council organized a fact-finding trip to Syria. When they returned they held a news conference in order to confront a hostile American media that continues to lie and distort the reality of Syria. Have we not yet learned how the US imperial modus operandi really works? Washington demonizes a particular country leader, starts a war in a that country (Panama, Yugoslavia, Iraq Libya, Syria), sabotages peace efforts, turns the place into a mess killing legions of innocent people after claiming the leader of that country is killing innocent people! Here is a different view. ... more »

The Wider World of 1889

Daniel Stack at 19th Level - 1 day ago
One thing I'd like to do in my Penny Dreadful Cthulhu game (i.e. Pulp Cthulhu by Gaslight) is be a bit more cosmopolitan than my previous exploration of the era. That doesn't necessarily mean even leaving London (though I plan on having the characters do so). I keep thinking of a scene in *From Hell *when early on in the investigation Inspector Abberline investigates the possibility that the murder (only one at this point) was done by one of Buffalo Bill's "red Indians". As it turns out Bill is off in Paris at the time, with "Mexico Joe" doing a variant show. I just like the remi... more »

Radioactive Water Contamination and the Socialization of Risk

Majia's Blog at Majia's Blog - 1 day ago
My academic research looks at catastrophic risks encoded into modern infrastructures and examines the governance strategies that frame and manage these risks, particularly in relation to economic, social, and environmental welfare. I'm currently working on a short essay examining how risk was socialized and privatized in the wake of the Fukushima crisis. Here are some excerpts (NOTE: these are "in-the-rough"): SOCIALIZATION OF RISK Economists George Akerlof, Paul Romer, Robert Hall, and Greggory Mankiw[i] helped formulate contemporary understandings of how organizations can privat... more »

The Evidence Farm

jurassicpork at Welcome Back to Pottersville - 1 day ago
North Carolina is famous for its agriculture, growing staples of American life such as tobacco, cotton and produce. But North Carolina's number one crop, for which there is no particular season to plant, is manufactured evidence. Yes, that's right. Your intrepid one had actually caught North Carolina police officers planting evidence next to Keith L. Scott's dead body not once but twice, within 10 seconds of each other. Don't listen to the racist assholes out there who claim the second object was just a glove or that the brave white cops were merely protecting and helpful... more »

Blogwhoring. You do it, I do it, we all do it. What have *yo*u been up to, lately? ------------------------------ Regarding the newest racist/racial execution of a black man, we start with that of Keith L. Scott in Charleston, North Carolina. John Cole at Balloon Juice shows two videos shot by two different people, including the late Mr. Scott's widow. At 2:14 in, you can plainly see the cop in the red shirt planting evidence, specifically a gun or what’s known in police parlance as a “throwdown.” And the brazen cocksucker even knew the man’s wife was filming him. ... more »

Now What for the Labour Establishment?

Phil at All That Is Solid ... - 1 day ago
Unless the entirely unexpected happens - not a first for 2016 - Jeremy Corbyn is set to be reconfirmed as Labour leader tomorrow morning. As that announcement is made, a section of the party will plunge into abject despair. Some shall leave (though I hope most stay), and others must have a serious think about what they do in the party now. Just like the left has done for the majority of Labour's history, in fact. For the most visible wing of our party's establishment Jez-sceptics, the Parliamentary Labour Party, this casting about for purpose and direction is set to play out public... more »

"Do You Know Who Killed My Baby?"

William N. Grigg at Pro Libertate - 1 day ago
“Do you know who killed my baby?” That anguished question was wrested from the anguished soul of Carol Dodge as she spoke with a young girl named Destiny Osborne shortly after Carol’s 18-year-old daughter Angie was murdered in Idaho Falls in June, 1996. With the police unable to identify any viable suspects, Carol – driven by an irrepressible maternal impulse to find and punish the person who had killed her daughter – pursued her own investigation. Over the past twenty years she has accumulated a library of evidence, most of which has been ignored by the police and the Bonnevil... more »

Chip Evans, The Progressive Democrat In Northern Nevada Who Understands Why The Time To Deal With Climate Change Is Right Now

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
The Nevada caucuses this year were fraught with the kind of ugly partisan corruption anyone who understands Harry Reid would have predicted. Whether you want to admit that Reid and his machine stole the process for Hillary or not, it was still clear that Bernie won the sprawling 2nd congressional district, basically all of northern Nevada. Most of the voters live in Washoe County, which Bernie took 54.2-45.7%. He also won Carson City and took Lander County 69.6-29.0% and Eureka County 86.4-13.6%, margins too massive even for the Reid machine to turn around. The enthusiasm for Ber... more »

The Sandy Hook FRAUD Shootings: This Is Disgusting - New "Documentary" Called "Newtown" Coming Soon To Continue The Lies About This Fake Shooting

The Fraud "Race Riots" In Charlotte North Carolina USA: BUSTED... Proof Positive George Soros Funded The Charlotte Riots

So we won't even bother mentioning the tens of billions of our money stolen every year by the wealthy in this country. Nor is there any mention of the tax haven scandal in any editorial or commentary in this lying, gutless irving press. There is, in fairness, an important story YOU need to know on A3. Pakistan Conducts Nuclear ‘High-Mark’ Drill Over India

Pakistan launched a “high-mark” drill on Thursday in efforts to foil any possible nuclear attack coming from India. All commercial flights were suspended for a number of hours on Thursday as Pakistani fighter jets took to the skies, fuelling speculation that a military showdown between the two countries may be about to occur. Firstpost.com reports: “The display of military readiness, which included a late-night jet flyover Thursday above this capital city (Islamabad), has come amid an unusually tense showdown with India,” the report added. Obama Vetoes Bill Allowing Victims To Sue Saudi Arabia For 9/11

Sean Adl-Tabatabai at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
President Barack Obama vetoed legislation on Friday that would have allowed the families of the victims of the 9/11 attacks to seek justice and sue Saudi Arabia for orchestrating the attacks. Despite overwhelming public support, The White House strongly opposed the legislation, known as the “Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act” (JASTA). The bill was passed unanimously by both the House and Senate, and would have given families the chance to hold authorities in Saudi Arabia accountable for their part in sponsoring the September 11 attacks. Rt.com reports: Known as “Justice A... more »

FBI Admit They Gave Immunity To Clinton Aide Cheryl Mills

Hillary Clinton’s top aide Cheryl Mills and two other staffers were granted immunity by the FBI during their email investigation. House oversight committee Chairman, Jason Chaffetz, said in a statement on Friday that chief of staff Cheryl Mills’ immunity deal prevented the agency from properly doing its job. “This is beyond explanation. IRS Threaten Citizens Who Refuse Obamacare

Over 30,000 scientists say 'Catastrophic Man-Made Global Warming' is a complete hoax and science lie

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
This is the correct way to answer the 97 percent nonsense. The hard reality is that even fully engaged scientists are at best uncommitted and should be! Worse, the evidence of the past eighteen years has been amazingly neutral after the brief peak that occurred in 1998. However it has been neutral but warmed up which provides a shifted range of temperature variation or should. Thus we have had a better climate for twenty years. I have good reason to expect a downward shift in the next two decades as against a further upward shift. In fact, were i a betting man i would give... more »

Self-driving Tractors

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
Self Driving will have issues for some time in terms of the private automobile. Most of those will not exist in the agricultural setting. The speed is naturally slow and you are interested in repetition which is not as easy on the open road. Much more significant, this technology allows for small machines which are potentially very valuable to the farm. Such machines allow for small densely cropped fields and narrow strips holding trees and fruit shrubs creating a vastly more productive biome. The most important tool is a robotic device able to pick raspberries and strawberri... more »

Why a Trump Victory in November is a Virtual Certainty

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
I strongly recommend this analysis. I have made many successful calls based on paying attention to the popular vote instead of the enthusiasms of newspapermen. Here we see that the popular vote has shifted to Trump as a result of his no holds barred battle to drive the pretenders from the ring. Remember we are merely asking two folks out of every one hundred to switch. That is not much at all. And it is now the strategic end game. Trump will now easily campaign as a robust centralist Democrat as that is what he has always been. After all the Republican party is going nowhe... more »

Mountain Lion in Guy's Face

This is interesting. A lion is an ambush hunter mostly. This looks to be a case of confrontation and stare down. Certainly enough to send the observe up a tree. I am more concerned by the lack of fear. We have not been serious about hunting apex predators for a couple of generations. That leads to a serious increase in direct confrontation. That is not a good plan. It is far better that they avoid us. This will start to be a serious problem. Young children are terribly vulnerable to both cougars and wolves who normally avoid adults. Coyotes are also a potential threat... more »
