Will The U.S. And Russia Join Their Military Forces To Fight Jihadists In Syria?

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 8 minutes ago
*Daniel Politi, Slate*: *Moscow, Washington Say They Will Join Forces To Fight Jihadists in Syria* There was cautious optimism on Saturday about the temporary halt in the Syria war that was brokered by the United States and Russia. But there was also lots of skepticism as air strikes hours after the breakthrough deal was announced sparked doubts about whether any agreement could really hold. To be fair, the nationwide truce isn’t supposed to begin until sundown on Monday. Still, the fact that what everyone believes to have been Russian planes bombed a marketplace in northwestern S... more »

*Reuters*: *U.S.-Russian Syria peace deal raises rebel doubts as fighting rages* The United States and Russia reached a breakthrough deal early on Saturday to try to restore peace in Syria, but air strikes hours later on a busy market place that killed and injured dozens added to rebels' doubts that any ceasefire could hold. The agreement, by the powers that back opposing sides in the five-year-old war, promises a nationwide truce from sundown on Monday, improved access for humanitarian aid and joint military targeting of hardline Islamist groups. Why Russia's Tanks Are More Advanced Than American Tanks

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 8 minutes ago
*Alex Lockie, Business Insider:* *US tanks have fallen far behind Russia in a key area* In 2006, Israel sent its top tier Merkava tanks to fight against largely unarmored Hezbollah divisions, but they still faced considerable losses owing to the proliferation of advanced antitank rounds, many of which originated in Russia. Fast forward to the 2014 Gaza conflict with Hamas. Despite Hamas having similar weapons and backing, not a single Merkava or Israeli armored fighting vehicle was lost. China Sea Fishery Collapse

The dimension of human idiocy is mind boggling. They have a common resource which happens to be the shallow waters of the south china sea or the submerged South China Plain. All the reefs need to become immediate refugia with carefully regulated exploitation that encourages massive growth. This will naturally support all the local fishery in the open seas. That fishery also needs to be rationed and run with ample strips of zero harvest. All this leads to a maximization of sea life and a constant overflow into the spaced harvesting lanes. The fundamental problem that we face today is the desire by religious fanatics to impose their doctrines on all others. This has come about in two ways. The first by financially empowering the political aspect of the most barbarous version of Islam. The second by importing vast numbers of Islamic immigrants not prepared to assimilate or eschew aspects of Islamic teachings that are clearly Anti Christian. These then accept leadership from the first. I personally think all this will end soon enough but that is yet unsure and may demand a global conflict to fully de Nazify Isla... more »

* This is my article in BusinessWorld last August 18, 2016. A declining share of agriculture gross value added (GVA) in GDP (gross domestic product) is often viewed negatively by many sectors because it implies that a country is not prioritizing rural development and job creation. Is this a valid observation? There’s no magic bullet in the Fed’s six-shooter that will fix their ineptitude when the next meltdown arrives. The problem is that Yellen and Co. don’t believe that analysis. Neither do the inept academics running the other major central banks. They’re all too “smart.” Yellen’s recent Jackson Hole remarks contain a footnote that’s causing a stir. Dozens of birds have mysteriously fallen from the sky above Boston, with a number dying soon after. Health officials are investigating what caused 47 birds, 12 of which were saved by animal rescuers, to fall from the sky in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood on Thursday. The Mail Online reports: The Animal Rescue League of Boston says it went to Bakersfield Street in Dorchester on Thursday after reports the birds – mostly grackles – were dying. I’ve read some peculiar things in the paper today. As I haven’t watched any TV for two days I thought I’d do a paper review, like Sky News and the BBC News channel. And Andrew Marr of course. I’ve only one paper here, which happens to be the Times, so I’ve invited myself to talk about that. There’s a picture of Aidan Turner on the front page. He looks much less attractive without his Poldark hat. In this hatless picture he looks as though he might be wearing a man-bun. Fifteen years after the 9/11 attacks, Ground Zero survivors still battle health problems with emergency responders and civilians showing record rates of cancer. The EPA assured New Yorkers that the air was safe following the attacks and the federal government was slow to respond with health programs to help survivors. RT reports: It has been 15 years since the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center when 2,726 people were killed. Among them 411 emergency workers, and another 7,000 people were injured after two commercial jets were hijacked and slammed into the towers. Both 110-story ... more »

German Military Prepares To Deploy On Streets, First Time Since WW2

Amidst rising nationalism in Germany and the unpopularity of its leader Angela Merkel for her “open border” immigration policies, the country is now preparing to deploy troops within its borders for the first time since World War II. The conceived threat of terrorism from middle-eastern refugees coming into Germany has forced its leaders to contemplate deploying troops domestically in case of a large-scale terrorist attack. There are growing fears that the potential for a large-scale terrorist attack is “conceivable, even probable,” according to the Chief of Staff of the Joint Suppo... more »

I am still shocked that the Syrians and Russians are now willing to accept a new "ceasefire" agreement to "end hostilities" in Syria.... To me, they should have never ever agreed to accept any deals at this point considering the fact that they are indeed only days away from finally eliminating the last vestiges of the US mercenaries aka "terrorists" that are presently holed up and on the point of complete collapse in Aleppo.... It would have been wiser for the Syrians to finish the job, wipe out the last of these murderers, and THEN possibly sit down and talk.... But one thing tha... more »

The editors hammered Matt Lauer, by name, for his performance at Wednesday's Commander-in-Chief Forum. In the past, this sort of thing has flown in the face of mainstream press culture, in which big news orgs and major journalists tend to maintain a code of silence concerning other members of the guild. Contrast this to the 787 which took 5 years despite Star Trek technology. The 787 claim to fame is really only the use of Carbon fibre. Ask them a few of these 26 questions – you may change their life. 1) Did you know that a third World Trade Center high-rise building also fell on September 11th? WTC Building 7 was a 47-storey, steel-framed skyscraper located a full block away from the Twin Towers and it was not even hit by any plane. Nonetheless, it fell at near free-fall speed straight down into its own footprint at 5:20 p.m. that afternoon. 2) Did you know that the owner of Building 7, Larry Silverstein, said “We’ve had such a terrible loss of li... more »

Lots of people approach me every week and say they feel they were retaliated against. I usually have to ask, "Retaliation for what?" I think there's a basic misunderstanding of what retaliation is, and when it's illegal. The first part of the problem is understanding retaliation itself. Webster's defines retaliation as: To do something bad to someone who has hurt you or treated you badly : to get revenge against someone So retaliation = revenge. But that changed this year, since the major party candidates have close ties to the state. Donald Trump is a born-and-bred New Yorker who has extensive real estate interests in the Big Apple, which he still calls his home. Hillary Clinton represented New York in the Senate for eight years and has lived in a home in the state f... more »

Lawmakers’ significant show of support — the measure was approved by voice vote — came just days before the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attack... more »

08 Diyala Raid When Maliki Used Iraq’s Special Forces For Political Gain

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 1 day ago
On August 18, 2008 the Iraqi Special Operations Forces (ISOF) were orderedto arrest Hussein Zubeidi, the head of the security committee on the Diyala council, and Nazar Khafaji, the head of Diyala University. The U.S. Special Forces advisers with the ISOF refused to support the operation saying that they had no intelligence against Zubeidi. The raid turned into a disaster. The ISOF ended up killing the Diyala governor’s secretary, (1) and beat the deputy governor (2) and Zubeidi. Then, as they were leaving, they got into a firefight with local police, four of which plus a civilian ... more »

*Doug Applegate, unlike his opponent, wasn't stealing cars when he was in the military* California, as you probably know by now, has an open-- or jungle-- primary. All candidates, regardless of party, are on the same ballot and the two top vote-getters-- also regardless of party-- go on to the general election in November. Most of the top candidates the DCCC was pushing against Republican incumbents did pretty poorly. Michael Eggman only scored 28% against Jeff Denham. Emilo Huerta barely got out of the primary at all-- just 1% ahead of another Democrat and with just 20% against Rep... more »

The Voices Who Keep Us Honest

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 1 day ago
A week ago, Chris Hedges delivered a speech before the American Political Science Association. Hedges has always been an astute observer of the times in which we live. The speech is short and it should be read in its entirety. But a few passages bear repeating. It's very hard to be a public intellectual today. Our social structures seek to crush such people: We are a society awash in skillfully manufactured lies. Solitude that makes thought possible—a removal from the electronic cacophony that besieges us—is harder and harder to find. We have severed ourselves from a print-based ... more »

"How It Really Is"

"Newt Gingrich, Reagan reflected, had never in his life fit properly into a suit. He still looked like the fat, despised, teacher's-pet, suck-up junior debating whiz who was going to fall apart in his senior year, except he was now fifty years past it. "Back when I was alive, he had that same querulous expression of a guy who didn't understand two big things 1. being smart doesn't make you popular, and 2. even if it did, he isn't smart enough for it to work for him." He remembered trying to explain it to Nancy, who had told him that, "Ronnie, granted that Newt is sometimes irritati... more »

The Flow Of New Foreign Recruits Joining ISIS In Iraq And Syria Has Stopped

© AFP *Washington Post:* *Flow of foreign fighters plummets as Islamic State loses its edge* LONDON — The flow of foreign fighters to the ranks of the Islamic State — once a mighty current of thousands of radicalized men and women converging on Syrian and Iraqi battlefields from nations across the globe — has been cut to a trickle this year as the group’s territory has shrunk and its ambitions have withered. The decline, officials and experts say, has been dramatic, prolonged and geographically widespread, with the number of Europeans, Americans, North Africans and others joining... more »

U.S. Official: Progress Made In Syria Talks But Unclear if A Deal Will Be Reached

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 1 day ago
*Reuters:* *U.S. says progress made in Syria talks, but unclear if final deal can be reached* The United States and Russia made progress on Friday towards advancing proposals for a nationwide ceasefire in Syria, but technical details still needed to be worked out, a senior official of the U.S. State Department said. The United States and Russia have backed opposite sides in Syria's civil war, which shows little sign of ending after 5-1/2 years of violence in which half the pre-war population has been uprooted. Moscow supports President Bashar al-Assad and Washington supports the ... more »

*Reuters*:* Afghan forces encircled by Taliban in Uruzgan province* U.S. warplanes unleashed three strikes on Friday in Afghanistan's province of Uruzgan, where Afghan security forces remained surrounded by Taliban fighters a day after having fought back a concerted push by the militants. The Taliban attack, in one of the country's top opium-producing areas, has exposed how thinly stretched Afghan security forces have become as they try to contain Islamist insurgents in other areas of the country. Taliban insurgents on Thursday battled their way to within a few hundred meters (yar... more »

*BBC*: *North Korea's 'biggest' nuclear test sparks global outrage* World leaders have reacted with anger after North Korea carried out its fifth and reportedly biggest nuclear test. The South accused the North's leader Kim Jong-un of "maniacal recklessness". China "firmly opposed" the test, Japan "protested adamantly" and the US warned of "serious consequences" including "new sanctions". The UN Security Council will meet later behind closed doors to discuss the issue. Such nuclear tests are banned by the UN but this is Pyongyang's second in 2016. Kim Jong-un's rhetoric has also ...more »

*Washington Post:* *North Korea conducts fifth nuclear test, claims it has made warheads with ‘higher strike power’* TOKYO — North Korea defiantly celebrated its fifth nuclear test Friday, claiming that it can now make warheads small enough to fit onto a missile and warning its "enemies" — specifically the United States — that it has the ability to counter any attack. Although the North’s proclaimed advancements could not be verified — and Pyongyang has a track record of exaggeration — the test appeared to mark another step toward North Korea’s goal of putting a nuclear warhead on... more »

An Indictment Of Military Intelligence In The Obama Era

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 1 day ago
Wikipedia *Fritz Corrigan, Forbes*: *A Sad Indictment Of Military Intelligence In The Obama Era* I learned several key life lessons during the time I spent as a U.S. Army intelligence officer, but among the most important was that a commanding officer’s example colors his or her subordinates’ actions. I took this insight with me into the corporate world after I left the service. Whether it’s on the battlefield or in the boardroom, the tone at the top exerts a strong influence on an entire team. So I wasn’t surprised earlier this month when Congress released its initial findings o... more »

“Is Tide Going Out on Hillary?”

*“Is Tide Going Out on Hillary?”* by Patrick J. Buchanan "Were the election held today, Hillary Clinton would probably win a clear majority of the Electoral College. Her problem: The election is two months off. Sixty days out, one senses she has lost momentum- the “Big Mo” of which George H. W. Bush boasted following his Iowa triumph in 1980- and her campaign is in a rut, furiously spinning its wheels. The commander in chief forum Wednesday night should have been a showcase for the ex-secretary of state’s superior knowledge and experience. Instead, Clinton looked like a witness bef... more »

Fighting Racism (all my life)

sue at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
I must admit I was horrified at last evening’s BBC QT (Labour Party special) but it wasn’t entirely David Dimbleby’s fault. He began by announcing that this particular audience were Labour supporters - including Corbybistas, Owenites and undecideds. Also Ukippers, assorted others (Greens) and possibly Tories, I forget. It was a kind of covering clause, preemptively distancing the production team from the inevitable partisan hollering, wolf-whistling, booing and cat-calling, given the inherent nastiness of the participants. Audience rowdiness is Nothing To Do With the BBC. I imagi... more »

RT Exposes Evil ISIS Tactics In Libya

Edmondo Burr at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
The Islamic State (IS) in North Africa is targeting civilian infrastructure such as hospitals with armored car bombs using brainwashed suicide bombers who laugh at the prospect of their own death and others while seeking martyrdom. RT’s William Whiteman reports from Sirte on the unscrupulous tactics used by the Islamic State (IS) in Libya.: During his visit to the city, Whiteman was lucky to narrowly escape the fate of many victims of car bombs, which are grimly referred to by pro-government Libyan fighters as “dogmas.” If not for a fighter with an RPG who spotted and stopped a suic... more »

U.S. House Passes Bill Allowing Americans To Sue Saudi Arabia For 9/11

Edmondo Burr at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
Following the lead of the Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill on Friday allowing families of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia. The bill passed without any objection or opposition. But it could be a cruel hoax, President Obama has promised to veto the bill. It comes on the eve of the 15th anniversary of the September 11th attacks in New York City. The Free Thought Project reports: House Resolution 3815, also known as the “Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act” or JASTA, creates an exception to sovereign immunity created by a 1976 law, which current... more »
