"Love Does Not Imply Pacifism”

*"Love Does Not Imply Pacifism”* by Derrick Jensen “Many years ago I wrote that this book was originally going to be an exploration of when counter-violence is an appropriate response to the violence of the system. In fact what has become this book was supposed to be nothing more than a pamphlet in which I took the main arguments normally presented by pacifists and examined them to see if they make any sense. Here now is that pamphlet. Here are some standard lines thrown out by pacifists. I’m sure you, too, have heard them enough that if we had a bouncing red ball we could all sing...more »

I Am A Recovering Racist-- Guest Post By Bruce Mulkey

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 hour ago
It’s in times such as these that I am compelled to acknowledge my own racism. For though I was raised by white liberal parents who early on supported Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights movement during the Sixties, I grew up in America, in fact, in the South, and thus I unconsciously took on common beliefs and attitudes prevalent in the dominant cultural paradigm about people whose skin was darker than mine. “White people are smarter.” “Black people are better athletes.” Etcetera. And though I’ve become conscious of those beliefs, I have not rooted them all out and doubt... more »

I Might Need to Work on My Cockney Accent: Penny Dreadful Cthulhu

Daniel Stack at 19th Level - 1 hour ago
We're still finalizing plans and I'm giving my players a bit longer to weigh in, but in a recent email to my group I offered the possibility that a Pulp Cthulhu game could be slightly repurposed to take place a few decades earlier, in Victorian London of the late 1880s and the 1890s. What would that mean for a campaign? To begin, the name would change a bit, from Pulp Cthulhu to Penny Dreadful Cthulhu. This isn't in reference to the recently ended Showtime series (which I'll need to view after finishing *Ripper Street*) but rather from the same source it got its name from - the ch... more »

Why Is China Having Problems Selling Its Arms To Other Countries?

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 1 hour ago
*Richard A. Bitzinger, National Interest: **China's Military Is Getting Strong (So Why Aren't Chinese Weapons Selling?* One of the frequent arguments made about China’s 20-year-long military buildup is that its locally produced weapons are better than they used to be. To a certain extent this is true, if hardly surprising. Relatively modern systems, such as the J-10 fighter jet, the Yuan-class submarine, and the Type-99 main battle tank, are certainly superior to the weapons systems they replaced, that is, the J-7, the Ming-class sub, and the Type-59 tank – all basically copies of... more »

Why I Rent a Tiny Apartment Rather than Buy a Big Home

Economically, renting provides the best value for money. What you are doing when you buy a home is diverting a lot of extra money into a forced savings plan hopefully secured by the future value of your home.. Thus home or condo ownership fits in well for an emergent family and is popular for that reason when the cash flow allows it. Yet when you take away the specific needs of a growing family, it is no longer attractive at all. Now you want a quality living space where you wish to live. Renting is often the best choice and the uniformity of product allows for easy mo... more »

Today's Communique to the Ravitch Forces

After what seems to me to have been a pretty effective skirmish, the Ravitch forces have climbed out of their tent at their permanent Basecamp, stomping the ground and waving their, um, whatevers. For those Ravitch acolytes who are not too drunk on revenge to read, here's something to ponder, as I am working on a next book today and don't have time to attend to your whining. ITP Final Conflict: FC1565, 16th February 2001 - The Big Issue scam

Whilst reading a copy of the Big Issue recently, I was struck by the irony of the ragazine’s (sic) pro-immigration stance. The writers consistently call for an end to the pathetic immigration controls we have. Fair enough it is due to the laxist measures of the State that so many foreigners are flooding into Europe (and other lands). The government is kicking unemployed natives out of hostels to make room for the poor unloved newcomers. These people then proceed to sponge off the tax-payers whilst simultaneously working in the black economy. This forces businesses to cut wages an... more »

Most of the time, Hillary Clinton isn't working too hard to help the Trump campaign. "Imagine what BBC comedy would be like if Trump wins"

Ed West, writing in *The Spectator*, makes the following point about a Trump triumph in November: One unquestionably good thing about a Trump victory would be a fourth estate in opposition to the government, which is far healthier than the obsequiousness of the Obama era; this courtly attitude is magnified in Great Britain, where the current US president has almost never been the target of any satire or ridicule. Obama Funds Israel for Greater Role as Regional Bully

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
As the US imperial war project collapses it needs regional actors to help play the role of neighborhood bully. Israel appears to love that job in the Middle East. Israel and the US have plans in the works to take even more land from Syria. Washington & Tel Aviv also seek to take effective control of Egypt and then use that base to secure Libya for the bankster and oil baron empire. Thus the US taxpayers are having their hides extracted by Washington in order to pay for this massive Middle East and northern Africa land grab. I got a call last night from a Florida friend telling... more »

Chris Hedges had hoped that Bernie Sanders would spark a revolution. Unfortunately, he writes, the revolution was still-born: The naive hopes of Bernie Sanders’ supporters—to build a grass-roots political movement, change the Democratic Party from within and push Hillary Clinton to the left—have failed. Clinton, aware that the liberal class and the left are not going to mount genuine resistance, is running as Mitt Romney in drag. The corporate elites across the political spectrum, Republican and Democrat, have gleefully united to anoint her president. All that remains of Sanders’ ... more »

The *Woman's Hour* website for today's edition reads: As the UK Independence Party prepares to announce a new leader, with Diane James the front runner to take over from Nigel Farage - what difference could she make to a Party *that's failed to attract female voters*. But is it really true that UKIP has "failed to attract female voters"? Well, according to Ipsos MORI's analysis of the 2015 general election, the answer to that is a pretty emphatic 'no'. UKIP (which won 13% of the 2015 general election vote share overall) attracted 12% of female voters - a couple of percentage poi... more »

*Real Clear Politics:* *Trump Concedes Obama Was Born in the U.S.* After years of leading the charge in questioning Barack Obama’s birthplace, Donald Trump acknowledged Friday that the president was in fact born in the United States. The GOP nominee aimed to put to rest the issue he raised -- and one that thrust him into the national political scene -- by falsely accusing Hillary Clinton of being the instigator. But Trump’s change of course instead puts the controversy front and center after a week intended to seize momentum in the presidential campaign, and it raises more questio... more »

Quote of the Day: On the enormity of the smallness of the enemy

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
*"He was seeing the enormity of the smallness of the enemy who was destroying the world. He felt as if, after a journey of years through a landscape of devastation, past the ruins of great factories, the wrecks of powerful engines, the bodies of invincible men, he had come upon the despoiler, expecting to find a giant—and had found a rat eager to scurry for cover at the first sound of a human step. If this is what has beaten us, he thought, the guilt is ours.”* ~ Hank Rearden’s thoughts in Ayn Rand’s *Atlas Shrugged * [Hat tip The Verma Post] . Content is copyright PC.BlogSpot.... more »

Are you seeing with "hard" eyes or "soft" eyes?...

Adrienne at Adrienne's Corner - 1 day ago
*a new term for me.* Cruising about on the internet yesterday, I bumped into the term "soft eyes." Not being a TV watcher, I had to look up the origin of the term. It seems to be something a character, homicide Detective William "Bunk" Moreland, said to his new to homicide sidekick, Detective Shakima "Kima" Greggs, on a HBO series called The Wire (2002-2008). When Bunk takes Kima out on her first homicide he says to her: "*You know what you need at a crime scene?* *Soft eyes….You got soft eyes, you can see the whole thing. You got hard eyes, you stare at the same tree, missing... more »
