For Greece, staying in the eurozone would lead to a disaster, as there is no way that Greece can sustain the conditions that the IMF and EU have imposed for passing the additional rescue package, Engdahl said:
“The austerity cuts on government workers, the lay-offs, the cuts of pensions are lowering of the economic growth rate,” he said. “It is now minus seven per cent in 2011. These terms will bring it down to double-digit numbers. That’s just not sustainable.”

Fifteen new plaintiffs sued BP this week Mobile County Court, Ala., and four others filed complaints in New Orleans Federal Court. For example, during the BP oil spill, the Caernarvon Diversion was operated wide open at 8,000 cubic feet per second as an oil response mechanism. As a result of this short-term response and long-term management, oyster reefs have been damaged, invasive species (Asian carp and water hyacinths) dominate the environment, a dead zone has popped up in Breton/ Chandeleur Sound, and habitat has been altered to one that is more susceptible and less resilient to the inevitable hurricanes that will impact our working coast.

More than four million barrels of oil spewed into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded, killing 11 workers. It took 85 days to plug the leak. The oil soiled estuaries and beaches, killed wildlife and closed vast parts of the sea to fishing. Barack Obama called it the worst environmental disaster in American history. The new agreement was reached with lawyers acting for the 100,000 victims. BP said it was “not an admission of liability”.

BP have struck a £4.9billion deal to compensate 100,000 victims of the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster.

Cunningham's questions in the segment of the deposition transcript released this week pointed out that after each accident, BP issued statements promising "to take action to ensure that it is never repeated." And that Hayward and other BP executives used similar wording in repeated public statements in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The questions also emphasized that at the time of the Deepwater Horizon disaster, subsidiaries of the company were on probation concerning felony criminal convictions involving two of the earlier incidents, and subject to a three-year deferred prosecution agreement involving mail and wire fraud charges stemming from the price fixing incident.

BP Plc (BP/) said it reached a $7.8 billion settlement with businesses and individuals over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster, removing one of three major litigation fronts facing the company over the biggest offshore spill in U.S. history. BP said yesterday in a statement that the settlement will be paid out of a $20 billion trust set up to compensate spill victims. Lawyers for the plaintiffs said in a separate statement that settlement will resolve most private claims for economic loss, property damage and medical injuries. Plaintiffs lawyers said there wasn’t a cap on the total damages BP has to pay.

A lot of people’s opinions over recent years has changed, because they’ve seen the damage high energy prices can do in a state like Mississippi.” They’ve also seen the damage of the BP oil spill. And they’ve seen that even the mere suggestion or the unfounded perception of a fouled environment can keep tourists away. Those are just two of the reasons we again call on Bryant to slow down the process of permitting either oil or gas rigs in Mississippi’s coastal waters. There is plenty of time to get this done right. Bryant should use that time wisely.

That’s right, since August 2011 oil has been bubbling to the surface over the Macondo reservoir. And if it’s being released, as we believe, through cracks and fissures on the seafloor caused by BP’s heavy-handed efforts to seal the Macondo Well, theoretically the leak will continue until the reservoir runs dry. That could take an awfully long time and release an awfully large amount of oil. So the nightmare continues.

Washington, Mar 2 (ANI): Scientists have tried to explain how power can fuel overconfidence, which negatively impacts decision-making. Grave consequences can result from bad decisions made by people in leadership positions. The case in point is the 2009 Gulf of Mexico oil rig disaster in which British Petroleum (BP) executives had downplayed potential risks associated with their oil well, claiming that it was virtually impossible that a major accident would ever occur. That same oil rig exploded, killing 11 workers and causing a massive oil spill that's costing BP an estimated 100 billion dollars.

In 2004, Crichton published State of Fear, a novel concerning eco-terrorists who attempt mass murder to support their views. Global warming and climate change serve as a central theme to the novel, and in Appendix I of the book, Crichton warns both sides of the global warming debate against the politicization of science.[24] He provides two examples of the disastrous combination of pseudo-science and politics, the early 20th-century idea of eugenics, which allowed for the Holocaust, and Lysenkoism. The novel had an initial print run of 1.5 million copies and reached the #1 bestseller position at Amazon.com and #2 on The New York Times Best Seller list for one week in January 2005.[25][26]

KIEV, March 1 - Russian oil major TNK-BP on Thursday stopped crude supplies and shut down indefinitely its Ukrainian oil refinery, shifting operation to importing gasoline and diesel fuel in Ukraine. The move, which may result in massive layoffs, increases pressure on the Ukrainian government, which has earlier rejected TNK-BP’s suggestion to cut taxes on oil refineries.
