The Zero Sum President
It isn`t the posturing of any President that pose the greatest concerns in any evaluation of `progress`for the future.
I recall a long deceased friend describing how the classification of a British translation of a Russian text had crippled work on the Pine tree and DEW Line early warning systems. As far as I know, even today the instructions on building on permafrost are classified. Structures built without that hard won knowledge were rapidly destroyed by the environment.
Now relate that to practices classifying - making them secret - new inventions and making them unavailable to Americans. Who are most harmed by these - and by many copyright and patent laws stifling initiative, including those on seeds patenting nature

Will the US be saved by its military?
How do you judge a State of the Union speech that begins with a lie?
There was any number of anecdotes or stories with which President Obama could have begun his talk to the nation. But he decided to begin with the most overused trick in any leader's rhetorical arsenal - to celebrate the military.
"We gather tonight knowing that this generation of heroes has made the United States safer and more respected around the world."
Did no one point out to him that the morning of his speech, the marine sergeant who led the 2005 assault on Haditha that killed 24 Iraqi civilians received no jail time for his action, same as the seven other American soldiers who were part of the raid? As the LA Times reported in the wake of the decision, "The lack of trial convictions in the Haditha case is likely to further inflame anti-US sentiment in Iraq, as well as fuel criticism by some legal analysts of the 6-year-long investigation and prosecution."
Egypt's young revolutionaries have risked arrest, torture and death to force the army "back to the barracks". But in the US, the uncritical celebration of the military is so strong that it clouds over its role in draining a huge share of the country's economic lifeblood away from areas where it's desperately needed or in fomenting precisely the kinds of wars and violence that have permanently eroded the view of the US around the world. How Egypt's generals must envy the ease with which their American comrades ensure their continued grip on a huge share of the country's power and wealth.
I live in a small military town in the US state of Alabama. Glorification of the US military is endemic in US culture, as the above article duly points out, and nowhere is that more true than in the conservative Bible belt where criticism of the US military's abhorrent human rights record is both anathema and non existent.
What seems to elude people even more than the violent history of the American military is the role it plays in the financial problems facing the US today. The economy is teetering on the verge of near bankrupcy in large part due to the senseless wars perpetrated by the neoconservative elites in Washington who send young, mostly working class Americans to fight rich men's wars while the military industrial complex rakes in huge profits from wars fought in the common man's name. The spectacle of the US spending billions, possibly trillions of dollars on wars overseas while millions of Americans suffer from a lack of health insurance, foreclosures and financial ruin are a sad reminder of the falsity of the notion of the military protecting American freedoms
"We gather tonight knowing that this generation of heroes has made the United States safer and more respected around the world." RESPECTED AROUND THE WORLD????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!! Ok

Prejudices? Quite normal!
Development of prejudice increases steadily at pre-school age and reaches its highest level between five and seven years of age. With increasing age this development is reversed and the prejudices decline. "This reflects normal cognitive development of children" Social ideas and prejudices are formed differently in children of social minorities. They do not have a negative attitude towards the majority to start with, more often it is even a positive one. The reason is the higher social status of the majority, which is being regarded as a role model. Only later, after having experienced discrimination, they develop prejudices, that then sticks with them much more persistently than with other children.
