Boeing’s F-15EX Fighter: Everything India Needs to Take on Pakistan and China
Mangesh Sawant, The National Interest - 9 hours ago
*Mangesh Sawant* *Security, Asia* The F-35 does not fit in the strategic plans of the IAF as it has restricted specifications as compared to the F-15EX. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *The IAF will be operating against China and Pakistan. IAF requires fighters which have a deep penetration strike capability, the ability to loiter in the air for long hours, heavily equipped with weapons systems and can carry conformal fuel tanks so that they don’t have to return to the air base for refueling. Apart from the SU 30 MKI this criteria is fulfilled by the F-15 EX. India has been s...
What Does Russia Think About China's J-20 Stealth Fighter?
Mark Episkopos, The National Interest - 9 hours ago
*Mark Episkopos* *Security, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] Although Moscow may have no intention of importing China’s flagship stealth fighter, their perception of it is relevant to their ongoing effort to sell China on the Su-57. *Here's What You Need To Remember:* Russia has largely demurred from complimenting the J-20 - and noted that the plane bears striking similarities to a previous Russian MiG design. As the Su-57 enters serial production in *much larger quantities* than previously expected, Moscow is making a concerted effort to pitch the fifth-generation fighter to major arm...
Donald Trump’s North Korea Gambit: What Worked, What Didn’t, and What’s Next
Katie Stallard, The National Interest - 9 hours ago
*Katie Stallard* *North Korea, Asia* Important point: The last four years proved once again that Kim Jing-un is rational and therefore able to be deterred – not the madman with nukes that is so often portrayed – and that he is sufficiently interested in talks to voluntarily halt nuclear and long-range missile tests while they were going on, to slow his march if not to halt it altogether. It’s easy to criticize Donald Trump on North Korea: the declarations of love for a brutal dictator, the disdain for details and history, the photo opportunities where the strategy should have bee...

How to Spot a Commitment-Phobe and How to Deal With Them
Natalie Porter, Enlightened Consciousness - 9 hours ago
Commitment phobia doesn’t mean you don’t want to commit; it just means that you fear commitment. People that fear commitment could find it affects numerous aspects of their lives, not just relationships. It can go well beyond that. That fear of commitment overspills, and they can find it challenging to make any decisions that regard long-term decisions. According to Arthur Peirce, who writes about mental health, you can spot a person who has commitment-phobe when they can’t even commit to a job or career. They keep changing jobs without a rational excuse. While numerous people stru...

It's lucky the harbor was shallow...

Here's a video clip of the small container vessel MV *Mentari Crystal* capsizing at the dockside at the Port of Tanjung Perak in Indonesia last Monday. Note the explosive snapping of a mooring line 9 seconds into the video. It wouldn't have been healthy to be caught in the whiplash! She ended up with her hull (probably her bilge keel) resting on the bottom of the harbor. Getting her out of there is going to be interesting, what with the threat of pollution from her fuel tanks. I've no idea what caused the capsize. I doubt it was overloading alone, although that may have b...

Women’s Trafficking: A Dark Side of Globalization
Vladislav B. SOTIROVIC, OrientalReview.org - 15 hours ago
According to the US data, for example, there were 600,000−800,000 men, women, and children trafficked in the world in 2005. Among them, there were 80% of women and girls. However, one of the problems is that the data does not take into account the traffic inside a country.[1] However, according […]

This and that for your Thursday reading. - Umair Haque discusses the U.S.' extreme aversion to public goods (based primarily on a desire to exclude large numbers of people from normalized society) - and the role that ideology has played in its failure as a state. - Erika Beauchesne reminds us that progressive taxes on the rich can serve as both a source of revenue, and a means of rebalancing a warped distribution of wealth and power. And Christo Aivalis calls out the Libs, Cons and Bloc for voting down the NDP's motion for a publicly-supported wealth tax. - Evelyn Forget writes...

Have an iPhone? You're Carrying a $540,000 Camera in Your Pocket (In 1991)
Bret Swanson, The National Interest - 14 hours ago
*Bret Swanson* *Technology, * Building today’s iPhone in 1991 would have cost at least $51 million. Every couple years, we update our original 2014 blog post that asked the question, “What would an iPhone have cost in 1991?” The purpose is to measure — at least in a rough way — the progress of technology by looking at the components and features integrated in smartphones owned by billions of people. In past years we’ve focused on the three most basic (and easily measurable) components: computation, digital storage, and communications bandwidth. This time, we will also look at ano...
Is the U.S. Navy Facing A Ballistic Missile Submarine Shortage?
Kris Osborn, The National Interest - 14 hours ago
*Kris Osborn* *Security, * [image: https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C1999%3Anewsml_PBEAHULRKCC&share=true] There may not be enough overlap between the retirement of some of the Ohio-class submarines and the construction of the new Columbia-class. The U.S. Navy now has as many as fourteen Ohio-class nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines and has already begun to build a new fleet of advanced, next-generation Columbia-class boats to replace them, yet the pace of their arrival raises the question as to whether there will be enough nuclear-armed undersea ...
Why the U.S. Navy Is Trying to Kill ICBMs (Think North Korea, For Starters)

*Peter Suciu* *Security, Americas* [image: https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2018%3Anewsml_RC1D08EACCE0&share=true] It is a big achievement for a destroyer to take out a potential nuclear missile. The United States Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and U.S. Navy announced the successful intercept and destruction of a threat-representative Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) target with a Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA missile during a flight test demonstration last Sunday. Israel Is Building a New "Iron Dome" for Its Navy

*Seth J. Frantzman* *Security, Middle East* [image: Reuters] In the past Israel has been surprised by the anti-ship capabilities of groups like Hezbollah. Towards that end a variety of new systems have come online. *Here's What You Need To Remember:* In recent years, Israel has invested heavily in new technology for ship defense, with an eye towards protecting Israeli ships above and below the water. Israel’s need to confront threats at sea, especially amid rising tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, has led the country to improve its naval assets over the years. That has mean...
Covid-19: New evidence on face masks

*THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2020* *They've got your Pawn Stars right here:* In these difficult times, it might be a good idea to draw some solace from the lessons of history. If so, it might be best to stay away from "History"—that is, from the former History Channel. The leading authority on this cable channel describes the way it began: *History (formerly The History Channel* from 1995 to 2008 and stylized as HISTORY) *is a pay television network and flagship channel that is owned by A&E Networks*, a joint venture between Hearst Communications and the Disney Media Networks division...
"Biden's America" Will Continue Pressure on Iran
Land Destroyer, Land Destroyer - 15 hours ago
*November 19, 2020* (Tony Cartalucci - NEO) - US President Donald Trump famously took a hardline approach against Iran - withdrawing the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) - or the "Nuclear Deal" - and opting instead for a policy of "maximum pressure" against Iran diplomatically and economically. But there is a major misconception that the previous administration of former US President Barack Obama and then Vice President Joe Biden - had somehow sought to resolve US-Iranian tensions and offer Iran an opportunity to escape out from under decades of e...
WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW DOESN'T REQUIRE AN AUTHORITARIAN
Steve M., No More Mister Nice Blog - 15 hours ago
I detect a subtle shift in the way we're talking about the current Republican assault on democracy. This is from an editorial in *The Washington Post*: Indeed, Mr. Trump may be setting a new precedent for how one wins elections in the United States: First, hold a vote; next, see whether you can bully enough state and local officials into manipulating the vote-counting and certification process on your behalf. The strategy could prove more viable in a closer election. Whether it works then will depend on whether public officials from the lowliest county clerk to the most senior U.S. ...

Republicans and Trump
Owen Gray, Northern Reflections - 15 hours ago
Most Republicans are sticking with Donald Trump. That's bad news. But, E.J. Dionne writes, you can see the reason they have made that choice by looking at the election results: In 2020, Trump voters came out in droves and thus boosted down-ballot Republicans. Trump won over 10 million more votes in 2020 than in 2016 — exit polls suggest that 6.5 million of his ballots came from first-time voters — which means he brought new supporters into the electorate who were important to this year’s House GOP victories. As one Democratic strategist noted, “2018 was a wave year because our pe...
