*Stephen Silver* *DirecTV, * It seems that the Department of Justice antitrust regulators have informed AT&T that any merger between DirecTV and Dish “would likely have to wait until faster 5G wireless service is more widely available in rural markets.” Concerns have been raised over whether a unified satellite TV company would cause prices to rise in areas of the country, including tribal lands, in which other forms of Internet access are not available. AT&T, due to its high debt load, has had trouble participating in the upcoming bidding for the C-band spectrum, FierceWireless ...
Yes the U.S. Army Wants Even Longer-Range Drones for its Troops
Kris Osborn, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Kris Osborn* *Drones, * [image: https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2019%3Anewsml_RC1ABE28C030&share=true] Smaller, faster, longer-range drones will help the Army fight enemies from further away and still win. Army weapons developers tasked with writing requirements for drones, ground robots and other unmanned systems are consistently looking to adapt to changing warfare circumstances and anticipate the kinds of new “tactics, techniques and procedures” they will need to both envision and write as new technology continues to emerge quickly. In short, what...
How General Patton Defeated the Germans at Fort Koenigsmacker in World War II
Warfare History Network, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Warfare History Network* *History, Europe* In the struggle for the French city of Metz, General Patton threw the U.S. 90th Infantry Division at the fortress walls to crack the German line. *Key Point*: Conquering Koenigsmacker was a minor victory for the 90th Infantry Division and Third Army in the context of the division river crossing characterized by General Patton as “epic.” In his autobiography, *War As I Knew It*, Lt. Gen. George S. Patton, Jr., set the tone for what was to become one of his Third U.S. Army’s infantry divisions’ major accomplishments in World War II. He st...
The IMF Can’t Be Any Clearer: The Global Economy Is on the Brink of a Crisis
Desmond Lachman, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Desmond Lachman* *economy, Americas* [image: Reuters] The IMF is now warning in the clearest of terms that any slowing in the world economic recovery could cause serious problems to the global financial system. As a second wave in the coronavirus pandemic now appears to be threatening the United States and global economic recoveries, the world's economic policymakers would do well to pay attention to the International Monetary Fund’s latest warnings about the vulnerability of the global financial system. Maybe then they will become more focused on the urgent need to keep provid...
How the U.S. Military Could Someday Beat China and Russia's Best Tanks
Kris Osborn, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Kris Osborn* *Security, Americas* [image: https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2020%3Anewsml_RC21RI9C3M12&share=true] There are ways for computers to still tell what kind of enemy weapon is being used and how it might be countered. What happens if Russia or China builds a new secret tank or heavy armored vehicle that even the most advanced U.S. databases are not able to recognize? What if a weapon attacks U.S. forces that is simply not in any known threat library? Does the U.S. military have any recourse with which to make a fast, informed, combat-sensitive...
40 New Destroyers: How the Chinese Navy Keeps Growing
Kris Osborn, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Kris Osborn* *China, Asia* Their plan calls for doubling the amount of modern destroyers within five years. China has taken another step toward doubling its fleet of destroyers from twenty up to forty within the next five years by adding two new Type 052 guided missile destroyers, bringing this year’s total up to four. Within the span of just this year, the Chinese have also added two amphibious assault ships and now four destroyers to the fleet, sustaining an alarming shipbuilding pace which continues to catch the eye of the Pentagon. The second newest destroyer, the Tangsha...
WWII: What Was it Like to Parachute Into France on D-Day?
Warfare History Network, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Warfare History Network* *History, Europe* [image: Wikimedia Commons] The following is a compilation of the experiences of more than 80 paratroopers who survived parachuting into Normandy, from the jump to the drop to the landing. What was it like to parachute into Normandy in the opening minutes of June 6, 1944—D-Day? Almost 1,000 C-47 transport planes delivered more than 13,000 paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions from the skies above northern France. Each plane carried up to 16 paratroopers, each weighed down with 125 to 150 pounds of gear. When a plane near...

Stephen Silver, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Stephen Silver* *Apple, * What are the key differences between the first HomePod and HomePod mini? The introduction of the new iPhone 5G models got much of the attention, but the “Hi, Speed” event held by Apple on Tuesday included another new product launch: That of the HomePod mini, the latest speaker in the company’s HomePod line, and the first new HomePod since the original HomePod speaker hit the market in 2018, the year after it was first announced. The main differences between the original HomePod and the HomePod mini are that the new one is both smaller and cheaper, with ...
Bombing Buchenwald: Could Allied Warplanes Have Stopped the Holocaust?
Warfare History Network, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Warfare History Network* *History, Europe* The August 1944 American air raid on a weapons factory at the Nazis’ horrific concentration camp was one of the most precise bombing missions of the war. *Key Point*: Would a mass Allied bombing campaign against the Nazis’ concentration and death camps have stopped the slaughter and saved hundreds of thousands of lives? Unfortunately, no one knows. In early 1945, the 50,000 starved and brutalized prisoners incarcerated at KL Buchenwald—the infamous concentration camp located atop a hill known as the Ettersberg, just to the northwest of...
Operation Winter Storm: The Stalingrad Rescue Effort That Ended in Catastrophe
Warfare History Network, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Warfare History Network* *History, Europe* German Field Marshal Erich von Manstein’s efforts to rescue the Sixth Army at Stalingrad turned into an unimaginable disaster. *Key Point*: In the end, both Manstein and Paulus refused to go against Hitler’s wishes. It was November 24, 1942. Speeding across the snow-covered landscape of eastern Ukraine, the personal command train of German Field Marshal Erich von Manstein was on its way to the southern Russian city of Novocherkassk, where he would take up his new assignment as commander of Army Group Don. Two recent events weighed heav...
China Is Now the World's Largest Economy. We Shouldn't Be Shocked.
Graham Allison, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Graham Allison* *Economics, Asia* China has now displaced the U.S. to become the largest economy in the world. Measured by the more refined yardstick that both the IMF and CIA now judge to be the single best metric for comparing national economies, the IMF Report shows that China’s economy is one-sixth larger than America’s ($24.2 trillion versus the U.S.’s $20.8 trillion). Why can't we admit reality? What does this mean? This week, the IMF presented its 2020 World Economic Outlook providing an overview of the global economy and the challenges ahead. The most inconvenient fact...
How This U.S. Navy Destroyer Survived Waves of Kamikazes in World War II
Warfare History Network, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Warfare History Network* *History, Asia* Battered by devastating kamikaze strikes off Okinawa, the crew of the destroyer USS Laffey fought heroically to save their lives and their ship. *Key Point*: The gallant Laffey, the only surviving Sumner-class destroyer in North America, remains afloat today. Two warships have been named in honor of Seaman Bartlett Laffey, a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. The second *Laffey* was built as a *Sumner*-class destroyer by Bath Iron Works of Maine. Commissioned February 8, 1944, the USS *Laffey* (DD-724) had already amassed a proud record ...
The U.S. Army's Grand Experiment: Putting Guns on Small Drones
Kris Osborn, The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Kris Osborn* *U.S. Army, * “We are looking right now at a remotely operated single-shot weapon which looks like a pen,” Col. Sam Edwards, Director of Robotics Requirements, Capability Development Integration Directorate, Ft. Benning, Ga., told The National Interest in an interview. The Army is experimenting with arming small, soldier-operated drones with guns to shoot enemy targets with either a 9mm pistol or tiny ink-pen-like gun barrel mounted on. “We are looking right now at a remotely operated single-shot weapon which looks like a pen,” Col. Firearms training: Old NFO lays it on the line
Peter, Bayou Renaissance Man - 14 hours ago
Friend, fellow blogger and fellow author Jim Curtis, known in the blogosphere as Old NFO, has written a blunt, to-the-point article pointing out the many problems with modern firearms training. Here are a few excerpts. I’m worried about the division I’m seeing becoming more and more prevalent in the gun world, where you are judged by who you’ve trained with, what latest plastic fantastic or custom gun you’re carrying in the latest holster, while firing the latest and greatest super ammo, while being able to in W seconds fire X rounds into Y square inches at Z yards. Or how to...

Each year five of us would meet for several days at Educational Testing Service’s campus outside Princeton to pore over data on prior tests, review the performance of each question, and select new passages and craft new questions for the next administration. Update #1 From The Pandemic's Trailing Edge
Peter Greene, CURMUDGUCATION - 13 hours ago
About a month ago, I told you that if it can work anywhere, it can work here. I'm in Northwest PA, a rural/small town county with a little under 50,000 people. As of a month ago, we had about 70-ish confirmed cases. Schools re-opened, almost entirely face-to-face five days a week. Well, things have changed. Our confirmed case number has doubled in about five weeks. The norm was days with zero or one or two new cases; now we are having some days with double digits. In two of the local four high schools, this week we learned that there were two cases in each of two high schools....

Doug Ford says he can't be bought. But his behaviour suggests otherwise. Martin Regg Cohn writes: Ahead of the last election, after a series of investigative columns in this newspaper exposing the Wild West of Ontario politics under the last Liberal government, all parties came together to support the cleanup (because all parties were part of the problem). Ontario’s legislature banned contributions from business and labour unions in 2016, so that vested interests wouldn’t trump voter interests. * UK: £50billion on wind farms? You might as well spend it on unicorn tears* Speaking to the virtual Conservative Party conference, the Prime Minister was, for once, full of that old bluster and self-confidence, as he announced his new energy plan for the UK. The answer to our electricity needs? Off-shore wind farms. Loads of them. Everywhere up and down our coast. He would make Britain the “Saudi Arabia of green energy”, he told a bemused public. This from a man who once said wind turbines couldn’t blow the skin off a rice pudding. He was pretty much right then. I wonder what chan...
