The Army's Latest Patriot Test Is Good News For America's Networked Missile Defense
*Kris Osborn* *Security, Americas* The U.S. military recently conducted a live-fire target “intercept” of a mock enemy cruise missile with a Patriot missile. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *The Army’s tactical and strategic goal, Murray often says, is to advance the multi-domain capable characteristics of IBCS to, not just network ground-based Sentinel, Patriot and THAAD radars but also incorporate other assets such as F-35s, drones and even surface ships. After Surviving Pearl Harbor, The Battleship USS Nevada Can Back from the Near Dead
*Warfare History Network* *History, Asia* Under attack at Pearl Harbor, the USS Nevada was the only U.S. battleship to get underway that morning. During the dark days of December 1941, when it seemed as if American and British bases were falling like dominoes across the Pacific, two incidents during the Japanese attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor gave American morale a much-needed boost. One of these occurred when Army Air Corps lieutenants George Welch and Ken Taylor managed to get airborne in their two Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighters from their base at Haleiwa Field and be... more »
Why America's Arleigh Burke DDG 51 Destroyers Are Here to Stay

In fact, Washington plans to purchase even more of the vessels. Meet Five Russian Weapons of War That Totally Flopped
*Michael Peck* *Security, Europe* There can be no innovation without experimentation. *Key Point*: Experimentation inevitably results in failures. It's not usual for Russia to admit that its weapons have failed. Especially Russian media, purveyor of glorious stories of space MiGs and interplanetary tanks. Yet Russia's Sputnik News recently published an article back in 2018 on Russian and Soviet weapons that fizzled. "For each military vehicle that is accepted into service, there are often roughly ten others that never proved to be either effective or economically viable," Sputn... more »
What If AI Pilots Became Good Enough to Fight Other Warplanes?
*Kris Osborn* *Security, Americas* [image: https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2018%3Anewsml_RC17FA813160&share=true] The Navy and Air Force are looking into fighter jets that can use AI to take down enemy planes. *Key point: *Drones could help human pilots fight other planes. Here is how the military is looking at winning by using human-drone pairing. What if an armed, artificial-intelligence-enabled attack drone detects an enemy fighter jet, uses long-range sensors to confirm the target before attacking with a precision-guided air-to-air missile? A Donald Trump Second Term: A Dangerous Time for U.S.-North Korea Relations?
*Spencer D. Bakich* *Diplomacy, Asia* What happens if the bromance between Kim and Trump were to fail? By his own reckoning, Donald Trump’s North Korea policy has been a success. U.S.-DPRK relations reached their nadir in the 2017 nuclear crisis, a crisis caused by the failed policies of Trump’s predecessors. Tensions ran high as he and Kim Jong-un traded personal recriminations (Little Rocket Man vs. mentally deranged U.S. dotard) and threatened each other with obliteration (fire and fury vs. taming with fire). Yet, the United States and Korea avoided war due to his deft dipl... more »

John Hook’s AG Bill Barr exclusive interview on Law and Order
As usual, MSM is going to great lengths to smear AG Barr for his actions that they accuse him of using as a political whip. They are totally ignoring of course the weaponization of the Attorney General position by Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch during Obama’s days. All they are looking for is a way to stop Barr from prosecuting Democrats or any other for that matter who have been involved in criminal acts especially those against a sitting President. In other words — his job. Because they are all aware that to some degree each of them are also … Continue reading →

Facial language fails with masks
Today I learned it is very difficult to scowl wearing a mask and have people get your message. The church I attend is still closed, so when we're in Columbus I attend St. Andrew Catholic, which is only a mile away. This has never happened before, but there were 4 men chatting 2 by 2 in the entry and in the back of the sanctuary. Usually, in my experience, Catholic churches are very quiet and people go there to worship not to catch up on the local news. I love the architecture, but the acoustics are poor with a lot of echo, so having someone talking (that sound seems to travel) make... more »

China Will Not Invade Taiwan
For seven decades, the world has been told that an invasion of Taiwan is imminent. The American military-industrial-congressional complex needs threats to justify wartime budgets, and China provides one excuse. American warships and aircraft routinely operate just off China’s coast. If China complains, the world is warned that China is threatening military action. The good ole “China will soon invade Taiwan” tale is a perpetual favorite. BirdBrain Barnyard Politics
I was surfing my YouTube feed and ran across this video group made by Gold Shaw Farm. Usually I watch, enjoy, and move on but today they added one that I think helps lighten our political mood if only for a brief five minutes or so. I hope the Gold Farm folks take this as a compliment and don’t mind that I reduced the segment. I simply couldn’t resist. ENJOY .

The SM-3 Missile Is America's Best Bet To Kill Incoming ICBMs
*Kris Osborn* *Security, Americas* This is quite significant, given that the SM-3 has thus far been primarily thought of as a defense against short, medium and long-range ballistic missile threats. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *The Pentagon and MDA are now working on a new interceptor expected to be ready by 2028. In the interim, military is working to modernize and sustain its current arsenal of GBIs with software upgrades and the addition of more discriminating seekers. Ultimately, the Pentagon hope to arm GBIs with multiple “kill vehicles” to enable a single interceptor... more »
The Kurdish Road to Peace in Syria Ends in Damascus
*Naman Karl-Thomas Habtom* *Security, Middle East* The only stable long-term solution for Syria’s Kurds is a rapprochement with the Syrian government. With the Syrian Arab Army emerging increasingly victorious over its foes, internal and external actors are left with fewer and fewer options. With other non-state actors largely out of the picture, the Kurdish-led forces are now forced to decide how they will align. Though their ties with the United States are still strong, the only stable long-term solution for Syria’s Kurds is a rapprochement with the Syrian government. Over the... more »

*New Classroom Priority: Social Skills, Emotions* There may be no more critical time than now to teach children to regulate their emotions. And yet there’s probably no time more challenging, as districts around the country begin the school year remotely. Social and emotional learning- the process by which children learn to understand and manage feelings, develop empathy for others and acquire problem-solving skills-has been gaining traction in schools. Research has shown that students who control their emotions do better in school and face fewer disciplinary actions. Many kinderga... more »
ICYMI: One More Damned Thing After Another (9/20)
Well, that week sucked. And there's a lot to read, too. Let's start with something positive. Drum prodigy Nandi Bushell has been youtubing covers for a while, but a few weeks ago she challenged Dave Groh to a drum battle; it went two rounds, and then Groh finally upped the ante by writing her a song. So there's that in the world. Now on to the rest. *On Campus Testing for Distance Learners * Oh, Florida. They agreed that parents should be able to keep their at-risk kindergartners at home. Not Just Trump: All Presidents Lie (But Some Do It for the Right Reasons)
*Michael Blake* *Politics, Americas* [image: Reuters] History reveals examples of how presidents must sometimes lie, and how their lies might sometimes be morally defensible. Michael Cohen, in his recent book, has called President Trump a “fraud,” a “bigot,” a “bully” – and, most emphatically, a “liar”. The Trump administration’s response to this book simply reverses the accusation, calling Cohen someone who attempts to “profit off of lies”. Nonetheless, the media has often noted the frequency with which President Trump lies. The Washington Post, for instance, maintains a running... more »
The 2020 Presidential Election Will Decide the Future of U.S.-Iranian Relations
*Assal Rad* *Politics, Middle East* For any Iranian-American that advocates for democracy in Iran, it is imperative to participate in democracy at home. One event, more than any other, has shaped the contemporary U.S. political attitude on Iran: the U.S. embassy seizure by Iranian students on November 4, 1979. Images of Americans blindfolded, with their hands tied, were seared into the American psyche. This event continues to color how some Americans see Iran, as evidenced by a tweet earlier this year from President Donald Trump, in which he threatened to attack fifty-two Iranian... more »
China Wants The Navy To Think Its Anti-Ship Missiles Are A Dire Threat (But Are They Really?)
*Kris Osborn* *Security, Asia* We take a look behind China's arsenal. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *The Navy is taking the threat very seriously and concerns about a “carrier-killer” attack continue to lead to the possibility of America building smaller, more mobile and agile carriers platforms. Perhaps of greatest significance, the anti-ship threat has at least in part driven the Navy effort to engineer carrier-launched drones such as the emerging MQ-25 Stingray. The Chinese military appears to be threatening U.S. carriers now operating in the Pacific by firing off a DF-... more »

Gentle Medicine: Be Less Interventionist And Other Changes To Routine Practice
Numerous criticisms of medical science have been articulated in recent years. Some critics argue that spurious disease categories are being invented, and existing disease categories expanded, for the aim of profit. Others say that the benefits of most new drugs are minimal and typically exaggerated by clinical research, and that the harms of these drugs are extensive and typically underestimated by clinical research. read more

<b>The Facts About Climate Change and California Fires</b> <i>The article below is generally sensible but at one point the author did not feel safe to deny global warming orthodoxy. He writes: "It stands to reason that as the planet warms, the American West will become drier and states’ wildfire seasons will be longer. " That does NOT stand to reason It is often asserted but ignores basic physics. The oceans in a warmer would evaporate off more water vapor and that would come down as more rain. A warmer world would be a WETTER world</i> Despite some progress made by heroic fir... more »
