In 2003, a Chinese Navy Submarine Sank. How the Crew Died Is Truly Horrifying.

Sebastien Roblin at The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Asia* A naval accident you might not know about. *The lack of clear official explanation has led to various theories over the years. The typical complement of a Type 035 submarine is fifty-five to fifty-seven personnel, but 361 had seventy on board. Officially these were trainers, but conditions would have been quite cramped. The presence of the additional personnel and the high-ranking Commodore Cheng leads to the general conclusion that 361 was not on a routine mission.* On April 25, 2003 the crew of a Chinese fishing boat noticed a strange sight... more »

*Review Gunter, Michael, The Kurds, A Modern History, Princeton: Markus Wiener Publishers, 2017* *The Kurds, A Modern History* is a very good overview of the Kurdish community in the Middle East. It covers the two main views of Kurdish nationalism, then goes from the Ottomans up to the modern times of Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran. In each, a similar history played out where the new countries wanted a unitary state and rejected the idea of giving their Kurdish minorities any rights. It was in response to this denial that the modern Kurdish movements eventually emerged, although at d... more »

Room for Optimism? Israeli Supreme Court Presses for Implementation of Ruling on Inmates’ Right to Personal Space

lmargalit at Lawfare - 15 hours ago
Last summer, the Israeli Supreme Court rendered a landmark judgement, establishing for the first time an obligatory minimum standard for the personal space allocated to inmates—convicted prisoners as well as detainees—in the Israeli correctional system. The judgment was issued in response to a petition to the High Court of Justice by Israeli human-rights organizations and an academic law clinic, challenging the severe overcrowding in Israeli jails and the lack of any government plan to address the problem. (Full disclosure: I previously worked as an attorney for one of the organiz... more »

Congress Should Oversee America’s Wars, Not Just Authorize Them

rfontaine at Lawfare - 15 hours ago
Nearly 17 years after the 9/11 attacks, a bipartisan coalition of senators has put forward legislation that promises to overhaul the legal framework for America’s worldwide campaign against terrorism. Proponents of this measure argue the existing authorization for military force—an AUMF in wonk-speak—passed back in September 2001 has become woefully outdated. The failure to modernize it, supporters say, represents a dereliction of duty by Congress. They have a point. The text of the 2001 AUMF no longer bears much resemblance to the wars we are fighting and that we will continue to... more »

The Ayatollah Khamenei and Twitter - Communicating Iran's Geopolitical Reality

While the world seems to hang on every utterance from Donald Trump's Twitter account, his preferred method of communication, there is another world leader that also has a Twitter account that he uses for similar purposes; to send messages to the world and to propagate his agenda to the citizens of the country that he leads. Ayatollah Khamenei, the 78-year old Supreme Leader of Iran who assumed office in June 1989 has a Twitter feed which was launched in March 2009 that provides us with an inside glimpse into the mindset of the religious ruling class in Iran and how they feel about t... more »

As I have posted we will see energy demand replaced by tapping dark matter. The turn over will also be abrupt as well. First deliverables are now months away at most. Another Special Election Red To Blue Seat Flip-- This One In Missouri

Last night, when everyone was wondering if Democrats would be shut out of the Orange County races in California-- they weren't-- and while political junkies were watching congressional races in California, New Jersey, Iowa, New Mexico, South Dakota, Alabama, Mississippi and Montana, a more definitive race than a primary was happening in Missouri's 17th state senate district in the Kansas City Metro. Rainer Maria Rilke, "Book of Hours II, 16"

*"Book of Hours II, 16"* "How surely gravity's law, strong as an ocean current, takes hold of even the strongest thing and pulls it toward the heart of the world. Each thing- each stone, blossom, child- is held in place. Only we, in our arrogance, push out beyond what we belong to for some empty freedom. If we surrendered to earth's intelligence we could rise up rooted, like trees. Instead we entangle ourselves in knots of our own making and struggle, lonely and confused. So, like children, we begin again to learn from the things, because they are in God's heart; they have never left h... more »

"What Foolish Forgetfulness..."

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 1 day ago
"You live as if you were destined to live forever, no thought of your frailty ever enters your head, of how much time has already gone by you take no heed. You squander time as if you drew from a full and abundant supply, so all the while that day which you bestow on some person or thing is perhaps your last. You have all the fears of mortals and all the desires of immortals… What foolish forgetfulness of mortality to defer wise resolutions to the fiftieth or sixtieth year, and to intend to begin life at a point to which few have attained." - Denis Diderot

Most historians, if you catch them in an honest moment, will admit that the popular levers of social change, such as education or legislation, are bogus; they don’t really amount to very much. What does make a difference–and then only potentially–is massive systemic breakdown, such as occurred in the United States in the fall of 2008. It was the greatest market crash since 19... more »

"A Refining Process..."

"Life is a refining process. Our response to it determines whether we'll be ground down or polished up. On a piano, one person sits down and plays sonatas, while another merely bangs away at "Chopsticks." The piano is not responsible. It's how you touch the keys that makes the difference. It's how you play what life gives you that determines your joy and shine." - Barbara Johnson

I Went to War Against Stealth Fighters—And Lost Badly

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * Flying with the bad guys into a mock air-to-air battle. *While the Raptor would be the most formidable fighter in the world due to its raw performance even without stealth, it’s now clear to me that even the F-35 with its mediocre kinematic performance will be an extremely dangerous foe in the air due to its low radar cross-section and sensors. “If the pilots of both could carry a 9mm and open the canopy inflight, they would have 15 more kills per sortie,” the senior Air Force official told me. “It's like fighting Mr. Invisible.”* *(This first appear... more »

How to Kill the F-35 Stealth Fighter

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * It all comes down to radar ... and a big enough missile. *Signal processing partially solved the range resolution problem as early as in the 1970s. The key is a process called frequency modulation on pulse, which is used to compress a radar pulse. The advantage of using pulse compression is that with a twenty-microsecond pulse, the range resolution is reduced to about 180 feet or so. There are also several other techniques that can be used to compress a radar pulse such as phase shift keying. Indeed, according to Pietrucha, the technology for pulse co... more »

The Russian Navy’s Achilles Heel is Aircraft Carriers

*TNI Staff* *Security, Europe* And the planes on the one they have. Under the stewardship of Adm. Sergey Gorshkov, the Soviet Union built a fleet that could challenge the might of even the United States Navy during the Cold War. But one area where the Soviet Navy never caught up to the United States was in the realm of naval aviation, despite the plans put forth by Gorshkov and his successor Adm. Vladimir Chernavin. The Soviet Union only completed one true aircraft carrier—*Admiral Kuznetsov*—before the massive state came apart at the end of 1991. With the collapse of the Sovie... more »
