"World's Most Popular Painkiller Also Kills Empathy"

*"World's Most Popular Painkiller Also Kills Empathy"* by Paul Ratner "Acetaminophen, the most common drug ingredient in the United States, found in over 600 medicines like Tylenol, has been found to reduce empathy in those who take it. According to a study, the painkiller reduces the ability to relate to the physical and social pains experienced by others. "We don't know why acetaminophen is having these effects, but it is concerning," said Baldwin Way, the study’s senior co-author. "Empathy is important. Dinosaurs Couldn’t Stick Out Their Tongues

News Staff at Science 2.0 - Earth Sciences - 14 minutes ago
Einstein could stick out his tongue but dinosaurs could not, according to a new paper. Instead of being like modern day lizards or legendary physicists, their tongues were probably rooted to the bottoms of their mouths like alligators. The discovery was made by comparing the hyoid bones — the bones that support and ground the tongue — of modern birds and crocodiles with those of their extinct dinosaur relatives. In addition to challenging depictions of dino tongues, the research proposes a connection on the origin of flight and an increase in tongue diversity and mobility. read more

Polar Ice May Be Softer Than Thought, Which Could Speed Up Sea Level Rise

News Staff at Science 2.0 - Earth Sciences - 14 minutes ago
Ice seems solid to the eye, but it is really a material that flows like a viscous liquid. In the polar ice sheets, it flows towards the oceans under its own weight. Knowing how fast the ice flows is of crucial importance to predict future sea level rises, especially if climate change occurs and impacts that. For a new study, researchers used flow velocities at the surface of the northern Greenland Ice Sheet to create estimates and data from satellite images suggest that the polar ice is softer than scientists believed. read more

Genetic Heart Mutations Ruled Out As Cause Of Most SIDS Cases

News Staff at Science 2.0 blogs - 46 minutes ago
Because Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), in infants less than a year old, are tragedies without known explanation, scholars have searched for causes beyond stuffed animals in cribs or blaming parents. SIDS represents up to 80 percent of all sudden unexpected infant deaths with an five in 1,000 live births in the US. The peak incidence occurs between two months and four months of age and is more common in boys. One explanation has been heart disease caused by genetic mutations but a recent study found that is less than 5 percent of cases, much lower than the 20 percent previousl... more »

I think it's because it's a book that should be read by everyone and HarperCollins is making that possible. Of particular interest to me is the fact that it takes place in Poland. I remember when I first learned years ago (too many to count) some of the history of Poland and how it was passed around from occupier to occupier like a ping pong ball. It certainly made Polish jokes way less funny for me. I've just started reading it and at first was c... more »

The The Red Hen in Lexington, Virginia refused to serve Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and her family last night because they hate conservatives. No more, no less. (Several people have told me the owner is the cousin of actress Meryl Streep, though I have no independent confirmation of this). Disinformation/Fake News

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 7 hours ago
The Left and Hillary supporters invented the term "fake news" and then Trump snatched it from them and used it against them. Then they disavowed their baby and threw it out. Don't fall for the "media literacy" set-ups--they have agendas and are not neutral. Facebook, for instance, uses Snopes to help ferret out truth from fake. That’s rich. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=16&v=UQcCIzjz9_s Sharyl Attkisson explains how this happened and what to watch for. Reshaping Humanity - and Earth

David Brin at CONTRARY BRIN - 8 hours ago
Will signs of human civilization – our unguided plunge into an “Anthropocene era” – be visible and detectable to others millions of years from now, after all surface relics are ground to dust? This article by Adam Frank - from The Atlantic - explores possible signs, like a layer rich in nitrogen from all the fertilizers we use (I think phosphorus may be a stronger indicator.) *“Likewise our relentless hunger for the rare-Earth elements used in electronic gizmos. Far more of these atoms are now wandering around the planet’s surface because of us than would otherwise be the case. T... more »

Mobilisation on a big scale

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 9 hours ago
Well, today's People's Vote March in London certainly didn't reach or surpass the required 17.4 million mark. Nor did it equal the 2003 anti-Iraq war demonstration which saw between 750,000 and 2 million people take to the capital's street (to achieve nothing), nor the pro-fox hunting Countryside Alliance march of 2002 which saw some 400,000 people marching in London (also achieving nothing). Still, Ben Wright's report on tonight's early evening news bulletin on BBC One (which led with the story) began like this: *This was a mobilisation on a big scale*, by people who had come to t... more »

The Predicament Of Diversity: No One Agrees On What It Means

The Conversation at Science 2.0 blogs - 9 hours ago
“Diversity” as a concept has a lexical and political value all its own, with a widespread appeal. The problem with that is, however, that no one actually has the same idea of what diversity actually *means*. There is some consensus that the concept has, over time, morphed into something that it was not originally intended to be. Denise Green’s 2004 study looks at the University of Michigan’s response to a 1997 affirmative action case, and argues that legal precedents such as this one moved the cursor away from social and racial justice towards a narrower, simplified idea about div... more »
