By Marc Levin, Michael Haugen Our research shows that rural pretrial incarceration has grown more than 400 percent since 1970. Possible reasons include the epidemic of opioids and other drugs, the inability of many defendants to afford high bail amounts, the reluctance of judges to release defendants on their own recognizance, and the lack of accessible treatment alternatives. Fortunately, our paper provides many solutions that policymakers can act on to ensure constitutional rights while also promoting public safety and reducing the burden on taxpayers.

*TUESDAY, JUNE 5, 2018Craig Melvin's deepest beliefs:* Before we say another word, we want to establish one point: Savannah and Hoda had no idea about their colleague, Matt Lauer. Neither did Craig Melvin. Everyone had heard about Matt, but those three *hadn't* heard. If they had heard about Matt, they would have spoken up right away, their moral greatness and their sincerity are so achingly clear. We've always thought well of Melvin. 2018 Crazy Horse Ride honoring, Tasunka Witko and Native Veterans

The ride is meant to honor the warriors of Lakota society – from the past to the present and even the future. Great warriors like Crazy Horse, for whom the ride is named, and for the warriors today serving in the armed forces. It also helps to teach the younger generation of Lakota youth the horse culture and even a bit of their own history. It encourages them to embrace their Lakota culture and to honor Lakota warriors of the past. The Lakota used the horse for their main mode of survival – the buffalo. The horse and its rider are of one spirit, and during a hunt this was apparent... more »

OW! times four - toes, that is

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 11 hours ago
I've just got back from a visit to the podiatrist. I developed an ingrown toenail that, in turn, developed a very nasty deep infection. The doctor reckoned the nail had to go to save the toe, and clean out the infection. While he was doing that, he also took off three nails that had been infected with a fungus of some kind decades ago in Africa, and which had never healed up, no matter what treatment I tried. He reckoned that was the only cure for something like that. I'm now sitting painfully at my desk, foot throbbing like mad, with three red and one blue bandages festooning ... more »

Stems, leaves and stalks in vegetable drinks

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 11 hours ago
I’ve been making some vegetable/fruit drinks since our daughter gave us a sample a few weeks ago. She has a “Nutri-bullet” but I’ve been using my blender, and I think the texture is about the same, but takes a little longer and a few extra spins on “puree.” Also, for easier digestion, I first zap the kale and spinach in the microwave. Contrary to popular belief, microwaving doesn't kill nutrients in vegetables. In fact, it may outrank steaming when it comes to retaining antioxidants. Raw isn’t necessarily better when it comes to vegetables. “Many people think raw vegetables ar...more »
