Ex-Justice Criticizes Death Penalty

In 1976, just six months after he joined theSupreme Court, Justice John Paul Stevens voted to reinstate capital punishment after a four-year moratorium. With the right procedures, he wrote, it is possible to ensure “evenhanded, rational and consistent imposition of death sentences under law.”
In 2008, two years before he announced his retirement, Justice Stevens reversed course and in aconcurrence said that he now believed the death penalty to be unconstitutional.
In a detailed, candid and critical essay to be published this week in The New York Review of Books, he wrote that personnel changes on the court, coupled with “regrettable judicial activism,” had created a system of capital punishment that is shot through with racism, skewed toward conviction, infected with politics and tinged with hysteria.

The essay is actually a review of the book “Peculiar Institution: America’s Death Penalty in an Age of Abolition,” by David Garland, a professor of law and sociology at New York University. The book compares American and European approaches to the death penalty, and Justice Stevens appears to accept its major conclusions.Europe holds the greatest concentration of abo...Image via Wikipedia
Professor Garland attributes American enthusiasm for capital punishment to politics and a cultural fascination with violence and death.
With the right procedural safeguards, Justice Stevens wrote, it would be possible to isolate the extremely serious crimes for which death is warranted. But he said the Supreme Court had instead systematically dismantled those safeguards.
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (Ictu) has said that the country cannot afford to pay the terms of the proposed €85 billion EU/IMF bailout package.
“Does anybody in this country or in Dáil Éireann think that we can as a people afford to pay 6.7 per cent on money that we did not ask for in the first place and that is being forced upon us to bail out the banking system in Europe which is in hock to this country for €509 billion”.
“We can’t pay that money and we won’t pay that money”.
“We know what this deal is. On the one side we will borrow yet more billions to bail out the bankers and the other side of this deal is that this society is supposed to declare war on the poor and vulnerable”.
He said that it would involve a savage assault on the minimum wage, cuts in welfare which would further impoverish those who were already struggling to survive as well as attacks on basic services.
Mr O’Toole said that while this was happening “the elite which caused this catastrophe will protect its own interest”.
“We will still have people driving around in black cars on over €200,000 per year claiming to be the representatives of this democracy”.
“It seems that the profligacy of the rich can only be addressed by the crucifixition of the poor."

Road to Hope Convoy Reaches Gaza

Despite kidnapping, government obstacles and financial challenges
The Road to Hope Convoy reunited in Egypt after having been split by the Egyptian requirement to charter a ship from Libya to El Arish and the kidnapping of 10 convoy members from Libya to Greece.  3 members of the convoy travelled to Egypt by sea with 30 vehicles and £500,000 of humanitarian aid, 29 convoy members flew in a chartered jet from Libya to El Arish and 3 of the 10 kidnap victims flew from the UK and Greece to Egypt on November 21, 23 and 25, all reuniting on the 25th.  The convoy was subsequently challenged by the Egyptian resistance to the 3 kidnapped convoy members rejoining the convoy, this because they had not flown in with the chartered jet from Libya.  This was not possible however because of their inability to get new passports after having been separated from them against their will.  Importantly, Egypt had approved travel to Gaza for all 3 of these convoy members just days before.

Hundreds of truckers converge on Delta to protest against Vancouver port
A convoy of about 400 truckers hit the highway outside North Delta Saturday afternoon in a bid to protest attempts by Port Metro Vancouver to cut their rates and slap more restrictions on their industry.

The Vancouver Container Truckers’ Association staged the rally at the truck pullout on Highway 91N, between Highway 10 and 64th Avenue, in North Delta as a less extreme measure to get their message across to the ports to ensure rate stability.
The rally was intended to avoid a repeat of the work stoppage in 2005, which saw a massive withdrawal of service by 1,200 owner-operators in 2005 to protest working conditions and “a race to the bottom” on rates.
The dispute disrupted port operations for several weeks and cost the Canadian economy hundreds of millions of dollars.

Haitian candidates allege widespread fraud in national election

Two-thirds of the candidates in Haiti's presidential race, including one of the front-runners, denounced Sunday's national elections and called for a complete annulment of the vote due to irregularities and ballot-box stuffing. At three polling stations in the capital, CNN journalists witnessed large numbers of voters complaining that they were unable to vote because their names were missing from voter rolls. Haiti's main electoral body, the Conseil Electoral Provisoir, changed the rules in this year's election. The rubble-strewn streets of the capital, Port-au-Prince, were eerily quiet as Haitian authorities imposed strict measures to ensure security after past votes were plagued with violence and allegations of fraud.
Haiti, which has endured near constant health and environmental crises, is facing a growing cholera epidemic affecting nearly 70,000 people that many feared could further scare voters from the polls.

COSMIC REBIRTH ENCODED IN BACKGROUND RADIATION?

In an unpublished paper submitted to the arXiv preprint service, world-renowned Oxford University physicist Roger Penrose and co-author Vahe Gurzadyan from the Yerevan Physics Institute in Armenia have announced a pattern in the CMBR - cosmic microwave background radiation - that could reveal events that occurred before the Big Bang.
