The War on Drugs Has Made Policing More Violent

The laws and tactics employed to fight the Drug War have transformed police officers from those who protect and serve to a force that, too often, actively searches the innocent and seizes for profit.

July 22: Us Very Imperfect Humans.

Graeme Decarie at The Decarie Report - 9 minutes ago
Again, I shall be off to sea and sand for this weekend. __________________________________________________________________________ Man murders 50 in Orlando nightclub. News media go wild for days, even weeks, in covering it. Two men murder over a million people, including thousands of their own nationals. They also create millions of refugees of whom thousands die of exposure, starvation, drowning as they attempt to flee. It makes some headlines - for a day. Now, it's forgotten. Is A Republican Congress Or A Democratic Congress More Likely To Keep Trump In Check?

Indiana's somewhat senile retiring lobbyist-turned-senator, Dan Coates, called Ted Cruz "a wrecking ball" yesterday and added gratuitously that "he's the most self-centered, narcissistic, pathological liar I’ve ever seen." He went on to accuse Cruz of trying to hurt the Republican Party. Trump's convention looks like a train wreck to me but tentative polling shows there were morons watching all over the country who were impressed and that he may be making headway against the Democrats' own horribly flawed, weak candidate. Dawson City and the Top of the World - Thawing Rivers and Wildfires

19th and 20th July 2016 Dawson City feels like the most remote city on Earth. To get there by road, one can travel 532 kilometers northwest from Whitehorse on YT2 or 298 miles northeast from Tok, Alaska on the Taylor Highway and then YT9 (a.k.a. Resolving confusion over the term "nonlocality"

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 10 hours ago
*Guest blog by George Musser* Few words stir up a hornet’s nest on TRF as reliably as “nonlocality,” so it is with some trepidation that I offer a few thoughts on the subject. To some extent, I think terminology has sown confusion. Different people use the word “nonlocality” in different ways, and if we can agree on our terms, much of the dispute will evaporate. But not all of it. Luboš defines nonlocality as a violation of relativistic causality—an ability to signal at spacelike separation. (See here and here.) In our present understanding of physics, that is impossible, althoug... more »

*A hilly street.* Jules Quartly over at the News Lens offers a conventional and oft-written piece on religion in Taiwan (originally for AmCham)... To an outsider, this religious practice might seem at odds with Taiwan’s status as a decidedly modern and technologically advanced society. Yet the past and present coexist without contradiction in the minds of most of its citizens. *The reason is partly historical. While the Communist Party repressed traditional culture, including folk religion, following its takeover of China in 1949, these practices thrived under the Kuomintang (KMT)... more »

The superficially crafted messaging of the Republican convention has been stepped on and obliterated every day. But Hillary better not feel powerful for having had anything to do with it. It's all Trump and his incompetent, deranged micro-campaign that's causing all the seemingly self-destructive chaos.
