A Night That Will Forever Live in Infamy.
(By *American Zen*'s @mikeflannigan59, on loan from Ari) Quicken Loan Center, Cleveland--- *D*ay One of the Republican National Convention was an ongoing exercise in intellectual theft (indeed, it can be said Republicans steal intellectual property for the same reason a starving man steals food). The lesser of these evils was when the RNC and "Law and Order" candidate Donald Trump began playing Queen's "We Are the Champions", which resulted in a firestorm on social media, beginning with the band itself. I seriously doubt the conservatives in attendance knew or cared about their man... more »
Sorry, But I'm Not Desperate
Have you ever gotten one of those political fliers in the mail? I have. Normally, I don't pay them much attention as they are full of loaded questions that reverberate within the politicians own little echo chamber. Usually these things find their way into my recycling bin long before they ever see the inside of my house. This particular one from my MP, David Yurdiga, however, caught my attention given the recent events that have affected us here in Fort McMurray. I did email my MP about it but given that he never responds to email (or at least mine) I figured I'd post a respon... more »
July 19: Not a happy day
Last night, I watched the Republican convention - on and off. It was boring because Donald Trump is a man whose only interesting features are his severe personality discorders. On matters of government, he is hopelessly ignorant. I could have tolerated that part of it. After all, watching an ignorant man with personality disorders is no worse than most TV shows. But both he and his audience scared the hell out of me. As I watched, I realized I was watching a Nazi rally, and the speaker was Adolf Hitler. Trump's policies are Hitler's policies. And his major appeal is to the raci... more »

Examining D6 Force Powers within the Star Wars Canon
I recently saw on Blue Max Studios a reference to The Force Accounted, an analysis of all the times the Force is actually used in the prequel and classic Star Wars trilogies. The authors determine there are ten Force powers used in these six films. They are: 1. Force Leap - A supernaturally high or long jump. Used very frequently in the prequels and occasionally by Luke. 2. Sense - Amplified physical and metaphysical senses - sensing danger, disturbances in the Force, impressions of the feelings of others, visions of the future and events far away. This is probably... more »

#VenezuelaWatch | You will not see this on the 6pm news
For anyone watching the contemporary experiment in socialism that is Venezeula – a conclusive almost scientific experiment that every young person sympathetic to the system should observe: as starvation became a real thing this week in what was once one of the wealthiest countries in South America, the Venezuelan regime opened its border with Colombia to allow desperate people the opportunity to purchase food and other supplies on the Colombian side of the border. Get that: To get food and supplies, Venezuelans *had to queue up to cross over to neighbouring Colombia* – not be... more »
Baton Rouge Shooter Was A Mind Controlled Patsy
The Baton Rouge shooter Gavin Long was the latest mind controlled patsy unleashed on America by government agencies in this summer of violence and civil unrest. The media and government are encouraging more and more of this violence in order to fulfil their goal of martial law, the suspension of civil liberties, and disarmament. Long claimed he was a victim of electronic mind control and was a member of a support group whose mission is to help those ‘marginalized and abused by remote brain experimentation, and remote neural monitoring of an entire human’s body.’ Long’s claims of bei... more »

And maybe you discerned this last week when “Law and Order” became another official Republican campaign slogan, alongside “Make America Great Again.” As it turns out, the model that the Donald Trump campaign is using for its public image, messaging, and policies was the one pioneered by Richard Nixon in 1968. Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort confirmed it. Then the candidate ... more »

Trump Wants To Break Up The Big Banks? Republicans In Congress Are Laughing
*click on the image to understand who really wants to protect us from Wall Street* Yesterday, one of the Trump campaign murky higher-ups, Paul Manafort, claimed that the Republican platform will advocate bringing back Glass-Steagall, which will, he said, "create barriers between what the big banks can do and try and avoid some of the crisis that led to 2008." Although corrupt corporate Democrats-- primarily Bill Clinton and the New Dems-- have been complicit in repealing Glass-Steagall and preventing it from being re-introduced, killing it has always been and remains much more a Re... more »

The announcement comes shortly after a report that the High Education Board ordered the resignation of 1,577 deans at all universities across Turkey. Arbitration on SE Asian Maritime Dispute Muddles China’s Propaganda Facade

All People Have the Right of Self Determination?
Succession is actually a bad idea and only serves to correct abusive political monopoly. What is true is that communities have the right of local determination and protection regarding human rights. Yet real communities actually number around 150. Super communities arise to empower individuals over those communities and by extension we have hegemonic powers. It has been my argument that this can be readily resolved using the rule of twelve to manage influence and democratic processes to manage money and power. Succession exists today only as a throwback to tribalism which is n... more »

"Human life is thus only a perpetual illusion; men deceive and flatter each other. No one speaks of us in our presence as he does of us in our absence. Last week, President Barack Obama announced he would prolong the nation’s presence into the country well into 2017 with 8,400 troops expected to remain by the time he leaves office. The news didn’t make front pages, but for Andrew Quilty, who’s been photographing the conflict from Kabul for the past three years, the world’s attention is essential. “Despite arguably good intentions, t... more »

This meant that there is no part of our mental life which is not contaminated by matter. For Pomponazzi, this proved that the soul does not exist, since it has no immaterial substance. Last night I participated in a conference call with 18 other activists from South Korea, Japan, and across the US. We were talking about the swirling controversy in South Korea since the recent announcement by the US that the Pentagon will station the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) 'missile defense' (MD) system in the center of their country. I was asked to give some background on the provocative US MD program that is now being deployed by the US military surrounding Russia and China. Under the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty that the US had with Russia these de... more »

July 18: A very bad day in the news.
Of 33 metro regions in Canada, St. John holds down position no. 33 for its poverty rate among single income families. And, before you raise a cheer for Moncton, it stands at 31. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/saint-john-poverty-federal-assistance-1.3683402 No, I didn't find this story in the irving press. (In fact, I couldn't find any story in the irving press abut anything for the past Saturday and this Monday.) If it were carried, the story would be just a moan that these are tough times - or that poor people are too lazy.... Anything but the truth. The truth is th... more »
The Dumbest Idea in Politics
[image: Empty Podium on Stage - 900] If there were a contest for the most stupid idea in politics, my choice would be the assumption that people would be evenly or randomly distributed in incomes, institutions, occupations or awards, in the absence of somebody doing somebody wrong.... more »

IMF: Venezuela Facing Hyper-Inflation In 2017
*Market Watch:* *Venezuela’s inflation is set to top 1,600% next year* *Food shortages, weak oil prices and economic mismanagement has forced the government to declare a state of emergency* While most advanced economies struggle to lift inflation, none would want Venezuela‘s situation: Consumer-price inflation is forecast to hit 480% this year and top 1,640% in 2017, according to the International Monetary Fund. A shortage of medical supplies means infants and other sick patients are dying of treatable illnesses. Soldiers guard empty grocery store shelves. Inflation is so bad, th... more »
Proposition: The Super Rich Should Be Taxed Again At The 90% Level-- Meet 2 Predators Enabling Trump
*Darwin Deason (76) and His Own Melania, 5th wife Katerina (49)* This week *This American Life* featured a story of father-son team, two deranged right-wing parasites who have been working to destroy America from within, ever since Darwin Deason, the father, crawled out from under a rock in Arkansas. Zoe Chace spent 6 months keeping track of how the 2 parasites made their substantial political contributions, contributions that began, this cycle, with a $5,000,000 contribution to Rick Perry. The radio interviews were with the son, Doug, the lucky inheritor, who has nothing better to ... more »
Israel Objects At The U.S. New 10-Year $38 Billion Aid Offer
President Obama with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel last year. Credit Doug Mills/The New York Times *Defense News:* *Israel Balks at Obama’s New 10-Year Aid Offer* TEL AVIV — Israeli industry is bracing for lost funding and layoffs as a result of a proposed $38 billion, 10-year US military aid package that rescinds Israel’s ability to convert a significant portion of US grant dollars into shekels for local research, development and procurement. While Israel still hopes to prevail upon the White House to bump its top line closer to $40 billion over 10 years, government ... more »
The government finds its housing scapegoat
So the supposedly politically independent Reserve Bank has clamped down on lending to investors in the housing market “after [says the *Herald*] Prime Minister John Key expressed frustration about the Reserve Bank's response to rising house prices, saying that it should not need any more time to investigate stricter rules for property investors and should ‘just get on with it’.” This is allegedly to fix rampant house-price inflation caused by these out-of-control property investors flooding the market. The bastards. And yet, over the last two years, as house prices climbed by ... more »

from the front lines, day 15
*Libraries Rock!* What can you say when 50 schoolkids march to your picket line holding signs they made to support us, chanting "Kids Say: "LIBRARIES ROCK!"??? What a day! The Dufferin-Bloor Hub camp does one social justice lesson each summer, and this summer, that lesson was US! The kids learned about labour rights, a little about the labour movement, what a strike is, and so on. They made signs -- and were each given a free book -- and came out to Mississauga to support the striking library workers. Also on hand were the executive of CUPE Locals 4948 (TPL Workers Union!), 416, 7... more »
from the front lines, day 13
We spent more time in the community this week, speaking to Mississauga residents about our cause, and giving the gift of free storytimes. Here are some reports. *Malton* "I had a customer tell me yesterday that he calls 3-1-1 everyday to find out when the library will be open. He asked what else he could do and I told him to continue to call everyday and also contact the emails and phone numbers on the flyer I gave him. "Many people I spoke to are outraged by the strike and the way the City is treating us. I also talked to a mom and her daughter dropping other small children off a... more »

While Ribfest took over Celebration Square, CUPE 1989 members had another satisfying day in our communities. The managers that the City has assigned to "monitor" us (their word) and the special outside security detail came along for the ride. Because, you know, library workers are a big threat to public safety. In our members' words and pictures, here is a bit of our day. *Erin Meadows* "I was at Erin Meadows Thursday afternoon. A customer came to return a book. He said he just came back from his vacation and he wasn't aware of the strike. When I explained our situation and gave hi... more »
