D. B Cooper (aka Dan Cooper) and History

*History *has done it again. Sucked me into another of their documentaries, this one just two parts dealing with the Dan Cooper (which everyone calls D. B. Cooper following the lead of one of the news organizations that got his name wrong so long ago) who hijacked an airplane back in 1971 or some 45 years ago. While the *Times* seemed to think the investigation into his use of a military plane to ferry his wife to a vineyard wine tasting might cause him problems, my thoughts turned to war. "The New York Times" Still Peddling Long-Debunked Bill Clinton Haircut Myth

*By MARC McDONALD* In 1993, the mainstream media peddled the myth that Los Angeles International Airport shut its runways for nearly an hour and inconvenienced many ordinary passengers whose flights were delayed so President Bill Clinton could get a haircut. The man gets it. He is praying that the public quickly wakes up. We know we are fed a pack of lies - but we still keep listening to the Big Machine. Our minds get colonized and we become filled with fear. We like to be comfortable - avoid conflict - and who wants to fight the system anyway? Can't we all just get along? It finds that only 40% of the pledges - $1.4 billion out of pledges of $3.5 billion - have been paid so far, two years after the war. However, if you break down the numbers by Muslim-majority countries and all others, an interesting pattern emerges. Non-Muslim countries and NGOs pledged about $1.4 billion and so far paid about $1 billion, about 71% of their pledges. Muslim nations pledged the bulk of the money meant to rebuild Ga... more »

THE PROBLEMS WITH NOVELS: The problem with the omission of Geer!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 14 hours ago
*WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 2016Part 3—Picking and choosing examples:* John Geer was shot and killed by a Fairfax County, Virginia policeman in August 2013. At this time, police shootings were becoming very hot in the national "press corps." In many ways, the shooting of Geer was especially egregious. Consider: Geer was shot and killed, in broad daylight, as he stood in the doorway to him home in the Washington suburbs. He wasn't holding a gun. His hands were raised above his head. See yesterday's report. Five police officers were present that day. One of the officers shot Geer through ... more »

Circle or square? Sorcery in the mirror

When squares look into a mirror, they see themselves as circles, and vice versa. Is it possible? You bet. How was this video created? Isn't it just a product of photoshopping much like this fruit-based symbol of supersymmetry? No, you can actually create these hybrid objects with a 3D printer. The rest of the blog post is full of spoilers. Well, this 3D printing guy tells us how the object works. What it actually looks like in 3D is a truncated cylinder whose base is a "squircle", a compromise between a square and a circle. Imagine that we parameterize the shape of the base... more »

RPG Review: Fate Accelerated

Daniel Stack at 19th Level - 15 hours ago
Fate is a difficult system for me to grok. I like it conceptually, but I have a difficult time when it comes to running it. Fate is what's considered a narrative game. Instead of modeling a simulation of the reality of the RPG setting, it is designed at supporting a story. I've seen arguments as to whether or not this makes it a "real" RPG. I think the whole debate is a bit silly, dealing with issues of "bad wrong fun". Truthfully the challenges I have with it are largely a function of me being a grizzled gaming grognard, gaming since the early 1980's. To paraphrase Yoda, I must ... more »

However, this becomes difficult when the future is involved. That only works at short range if at all. Since most searching is future oriented, it is no surprise that so much is disappointing. If insight is provided, then also action needs to be immediate.. *Ascension and Receiving Divine Knowledge * *by Trish LeSage* *http://www.riseearth.com/2013/12/ascension-and-receiv... more »

How do I become as genius as Nikola Tesla?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
Rather good commentary here. Insight must also be coupled with disciplined analysis. The subconscious can be wrong as well or easily misread. Thus genius inspiration is best coupled to an excellent training in mathematics. Fortunately most such inspiration can be at least partially trusted. The sleep management effect is intriguing though and may be the result of tiredness. Pope says Church should Ask Forgiveness from Gays for Past Treatment

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
All humanity should ask for forgiveness for the treatment of gays. It has taken this generation to finally redress our deep cultural bias regarding homosexuality and it is very much a work in progress and by no means even slightly universal. My own natural instincts are anti gay and this is not learned but hardwired in something as simple as my instinctual response to a gay approach. Thus we all have much to learn and much to master regarding our own instincts. This is not an academic question at all. There are obviously a set of human instinctual responses that need to be c... more »

Electric Gravity in an Electric Universe

They are struggling here with the problem of gravity and it nicely covers the history. My own work has made it all simpler still than what is proposed here although what is proposed will express itself well. I find that this is the first article to propose a packed aether consisting of neutrinos. ( they need to be neutral and thus undetectable ) Not bad. however, i understand this as the first tier of matter of matter from which the second tier and also the third tier is created. Fly Southwest Monarch Study for Citizen Science

I find this article reassuring as it is clear that the monarchs are hugely adaptable. Better yet folks are paying attention now to protecting and increasing milk weed plantings. In fact we also need to support a commercial milkweed anyway as it is a huge source of unique fiber and a natural latex. It has been exploited in the past and needs to be encouraged. Such a program will then provide ample habitat for the monarchs. In the meantime it remains clear that Monsanto or not, they are not going to go extinct. . *Fly Southwest Monarch Study for Citizen Science* *By nfriedman |... more »

The War on Weed Is Winding Down -- but Will Monsanto Be the Winner?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
Essentially everyone is bowing to the inevitable as research stifled in the USA is done elsewhere. The cat is truly out of the bag and the decades of lying about the drug's effects are also coming home to roost. In fact this history represents a massive argument for legislative reform of the whole drug industry. We also need to revisit the whole topic of intellectual property protection and the granting of monopolies. This has been proven to be incredibly counter productive and is the source of much of the market distortion. What is clear is that momentum is accelerating... more »

How the Dairy Industry Tricked Us Into Believing We Need Milk

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
Advertising has never been too concerned regarding the facts and this reviews the tale regarding milk. Add in plenty of regulatory manipulation and actual suppression and we have the present state of affairs. It is not right or particularly satisfactory. Fresh raw milk with a high quality raw egg is a valuable drink supporting childhood growth. After all that perhaps not so important. However, fermented milk as cheese and yogurt is an excellent source of protein for adults. Meditations is one of those books that i placed on my lifetime reading list fifty years ago that i have yet to properly tackle. I think it just made it to the top and it should be on yours as well. We have so little of the writings of the great pagan thinkers that every gem is a gift. Their translation is an even greater gift when well accomplished. 10th and 11th July 2016 I now know what it is like to enter a disaster zone. On approach to Fort McMurray, Alberta, roadside signs advise that mental healthcare is available. Roadworks are underway to patch rearranged asphalt on the highway. Blackened sticks line the highway where boreal forests once stood. A roadside sign advertises a Denny’s, but only a pile of white ash exists where a restaurant once stood. The air stinks of what I presume is the stench of melted buildings, melted plastic, blended with some other, undefinable bitter smells. The air feels toxic. On 3rd May 2016,... more »

Taken during the Euro 2016 final outside the Stade de France in Paris, it shows a nationalist spectacle on a giant screen blinding people to what is happening on the streets. This is my latest and most important re-post of a Paul-Craig-Roberts treatise on how the American people are being bamboozled by their government with the help of our “mainstream media” who repeat all government lies as if the God’s truth (thus dubbed “presstitutes” by PCR). In his second paragraph he states accurately that : “Since the Clinton regime NATO has been an alliance for waging offensive war, a war crime under the Nuremberg rules established by the United States. Under the NATO banner a number of countries have been bombed, invaded, and had their governments overthrown by Washington acting under the cover of NATO.” Most of the rest of this article proves factually that the frequently used presstitute term “Russian aggression” actually covers up very real US and NATO aggression. And the worst part is that the US and its European vassals are inviting a nuclear war with Russia -- which if it ever happens would kill all us all because Russia has superior nuclear missiles that can travel faster than inferior US anti-ballistic missiles. Although a full-force of nuclear exchange could destroy the whole human race. Fortunately, Vladimir Putin is not a “monster”; he is a peace maker, but if attacked he surely would counterattack. But don’t despair. If enough Americans read PCR’s work, maybe a movement could arise countering the Washington neocons. And failing that, it is certain that the western world will face economic collapse in the near future, very likely disintegrating NATO without a shot fired. Let us hope...

Rebel Controlled Aleppo Now Under Siege

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 1 day ago
*Reuters:* *Aleppo rebels brace for long Syrian government siege* Rebel areas of Aleppo have stockpiled enough basic supplies to survive months of siege by Syrian pro-government forces that cut off their half of the city last week, even though some goods are running out, an opposition official said. Government forces backed by allies including Lebanon's Hezbollah and the Russian air force advanced last week to within a few hundred meters (yards) of the only road into the rebel-held part of Aleppo, making it impassable for the several hundred thousand people living there. Far more $ for tests than for libraries

In a recent twitter post, US Sec of Education John King asked: "Are we investing more in punishment than prevention? More in prisons than in schools?" Good question. How the State Worsens Economic Inequality

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
*Guest post by Philipp Bagus* [image: 51lzlARBttL]Thomas Piketty´s book, *Capital in the Twenty-First Century*, on growing inequality in capitalism, has become a bestseller. Piketty offers much data claiming that inequality is rising and draws the conclusion that the state should fix that ‘problem’ with additional taxes on the rich. It is true that the distance between the ‘super rich’ and the rest of the population has been increasing in recent decades. It has become more difficult to reach average net wealth with an average income. But maybe the most important reason for t... more »

More Details Emerge From The U.S.-Led Coalition Air Attack That Destroyed A Convoy Of Islamic State Fighters Fleeing Fallujah Two Weeks Ago

*USA Today:* *Inside look at U.S.-led coalition's deadliest single attack on ISIL* The initial reports coming into Baghdad’s operations center seemed implausible: A convoy of dozens of Islamic State vehicles were preparing to flee advancing Iraqi forces in Fallujah. A surveillance drone dispatched to the area confirmed the reports. Staff officers gathered around screens and stared incredulously as the numbers of vehicles continued to expand, the militants apparently oblivious to the target they presented from the air. It was an unprecedented opportunity. The Islamic State had lea... more »

Why Don't Conservative Democrats Debate?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
The Democratic establishment insisted on pushing doddering and conservative relic Ted Strickland as the Ohio Senate nominee. Strickland was too scared to debate his young and intellectually vigorous opponent, PG Sittenfeld-- he never did-- and now he's facing a situation where he is unprepared to debate his Republican opponent, Rob Portman. In the end, Strickland beat Sittenfeld by a landslide, 720,336 to 248,776, and taking part in the series of debates-- or even *one* debate-- Sittenfeld challenged him to do, wouldn't have changed the outcome. But it would have prepared the 74 y... more »

I enjoy having my positions challenged intelligently. Swedish free-marketeer Johan Norberg argues that free-marketers like myself should not be so excited about Britain leaving the EU. “Brexit,” he argues, “is a dangerous blow to openness and free trade.” Like me, he says, *I would prefer a system where countries automatically accept unrestricted imports of all goods that have passed the regulatory hurdles in the exporting country, but that's not an option that interests any E.U. country, including Britain.
