First Impressions of Delta Green - Agent's Handbook
The first thing that struck me about the Delta Green *Agent's Handbook* is
just how dark a game this is. Reading through it I see a game that like
it's parent, *Call of Cthulhu*, puts our protagonists on the front lines
against ancient horrors with life and sanity on the line. But Delta Green
has more ways to make the agents fall to pieces. There's rules for abusing
stimulants on a mission, game-related reasons for seeking solace in the
bottle. rules for sacrificing - or just losing - pieces of your personal
life. If you are lucky you'll end up in Cthulhu's tummy. If you're unlucky... more »

The first thing Rahm Emanuel wanted to do once Obama made him chief of

50-state strategy was the beginning of Emanuel's catastrophic stint as
"Obama's prime minister," a stint that led directly to the loss of 63 seats

the Senate. Rahm wanted a harmless order-taker to replace the opinionated

Making The House Better Has Nothing To Do With The DCCC
Last month Jason the Greek, a Kos diarist, talked about six little-noticed,
underfunded but exceptionally important House candidates. The Democrats
would need to net 30 seats to evict Ryan from the Speaker's job and take
control of the House. Jason seems more optimistic than I do that this is
possible. I contend that because of endemic DCCC incompetence and corruption--
manifested, for example, by suicidally horrendous candidate recruitment--
even the anti-Trump tsunami I'm expecting won't do the trick for the Dems.
The Dems currently have 34 Red to Blue candidates, most of them tr... more »

Making Sense of the Meltdown
*A view from my old mucker, @ianpmclaughlan.*
Darwin’s Law, that it's the species that best adapts to change that will
survive, is as true of political parties as it is of the natural world.
That is the main reason we see such turmoil in our politics right now: they
simply haven’t adapted quickly enough to change.
The second factor, and this is crucial, is that people need good
information to be able to make the decisions that best suits them. There is
very rarely a right or wrong choice, just one which suits the individual
taking them. Because of vested interests in society, peopl... more »

In a column for Foreign Policy Magazine, Council on Foreign Relations
member James Traub argues that the elite need to “rise up” against the
“mindlessly angry” ignorant masses in order to prevent globalization from
being derailed by the populist revolt that led to Brexit and the rise of
Donald Trump. In a spectacular display of the very ignorance against which
he issues his call to arms, Traub shows how thoroughly infected the

"A Look to the Heavens"
“Why do many galaxies appear as spirals? A striking example is M101, shown
above, whose relatively close distance of about 27 million light years
allows it to be studied in some detail. Observational evidence indicates
that a close gravitational interaction with a neighboring galaxy created
waves of high mass and condensed gas which continue to orbit the galaxy
center. These waves compress existing gas and cause star formation.

One result is that M101, also called the Pinwheel Galaxy, has several

"The title of this post is another phrase from the poet Pat Boran. A lovely
image, evoking friends in rocking chairs sipping ice tea or gin-and-tonics
on a drowsy summer night. Out there in the darkness lightnin' bugs flash
their sleepy semaphores. Somewhere afar off heat lightnin' illuminates the
horizon. Our language drifts into the dark. We have words too for stars,
for black holes and quasars, for the cosmic microwave background radiation.
Our words leak off the porch into the summer darkness, bringing some small

“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” That deathless phrase of

When democracy becomes inconvenient...
'Ministers and senior Tory MPs are discussing whether Theresa May could be
installed as leader without a vote by ordinary members if she has
overwhelming support in the parliamentary party.
Mrs May could have the backing of up to half the 330 Conservative MPs when
the first round of votes is held next Tuesday. A senior Tory minister,
however, called yesterday on fellow MPs to decide on a new leader quickly,
without the need for a wider vote.
Anna Soubry, the business minister and a prominent EU supporter, said that
it was bad for Britain to allow uncertainty to continue…'

June 1: Canada Day does not mean Lying Day
Canada, including New Brunswick, is in the midst of a storm over the
building of oil pipelines. One of the disputed ones is proposed to pass
through New Brunswick. There's another one, the Northern Gateway, projected
to go from Alberta to the west coast.
Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled against the Northern Gateway Pipeline on
the grounds that native peoples had not been properly consulted. How could
the editors of the Irving press have missed that story? It was on the web
yesterday, on CBC news, in plenty of time. (I think I can guess why they
missed it.)
And one might consider... more »

Stirring Up A War With Russia-- Just What The World Needs
*Breedlove*
I spent most of June in Russia, primarily in Moscow and St. Petersburg. As
I mentioned on Wednesday, I found Russians-- particularly in Moscow-- surly
and defiant towards America and the West. The Western establishment insists
Putin is using propaganda to play on the old fears and prejudices of the
Cold War. On one level I saw it as a kind of paranoia, but it's a paranoia
based on a very hard reality not on baseless assertions. As Lee Fang and
Zaid Jilani made clear today at *The Intercept* Russia's fears were far
from baseless as Gen. Philip Breedlove, now retired but u... more »
