Blinkin's arrogant hypocrisy
*The Saker reports:* Out of the Ukraine we have a new movie. The video of the alleged “Kazakhstan Liberation Front”, in which they call to fight the CSTO troops, was filmed in the Ukraine by a group of nationalists (Nazis) led by Dmitry Korchinsky. This was reported to “Strana UA” by a source in nationalist circles. Take a look at the ‘statement’ from the Ukrainian leader of the Ultra-Nationalist group Bratstvo on Kazakhstan — says Ukrainian militias will penetrate Kazakhstan and assist the armed gangs that have been wreaking havoc on the population for the last few days: ... read more
Why Is Poland Buying M1A2 Abrams Tanks?
*Mark Episkopos* *M1 Abrams, * Experts contend that the purchase of tanks sends a clear message to Moscow about Washington’s commitment to NATO. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Whereas most arms import contracts are typically framed in diplomatically neutral terms, Błaszczak did not mince words in describing the reason behind Poland MBT purchase: "Of course this is a response to the challenges we face in terms of international security. Our task is to deter a potential aggressor. We all know where that aggressor is,” he said, in what is a clear reference to Russia. Poland’s ... read more
Are Iran and China Allying Against America?
*Lyes Mauni Jalali* *China-Iran Deal, Middle East* Iran has neither fully committed to the “East Pivot,” nor will it do so if it can get an agreement with the West. But failing an agreement with the West, Tehran will fully commit to China. ARE CHINA and Iran about to become strategic partners? Or does the West have nothing to worry about? What might be called the “alarmist” view is that Iran and China have concluded a strategic pact which binds them for a quarter of a century touching a wide range of domains, not only oil and gas, but also military, intelligence, and connectivity... read more
NATO Security Dependents Are Not Useful Allies
*Ted Galen Carpenter* *Alliances, Europe* Many of America’s so-called allies are major liabilities rather than assets to U.S. foreign policy. Indeed, they are potential snares, ones that can entangle America in unnecessary military confrontations. SINCE THE end of World War II, U.S. officials have had an unduly expansive concept of what constitutes worthwhile strategic allies for the United States. In too many cases, the “allies” that Washington touts are small, weak, often militarily useless dependents. Worse, some of them are on bad terms with more powerful neighboring states. ... read more
Defending Taiwan Requires Diffusing the Financial ‘Doomsday Machine’
*Christopher Vassallo* *Taiwan, Indo-Pacific* As Great Britain learned, war becomes more likely if steps aren’t taken to unwind financial dependence and restore the feasibility of coercive economic tools. As France and Germany tangled in Russia in the years immediately before World War I, Great Britain devised plans for a financial weapon that could cripple an adversary at the outbreak of conflict. France and Germany attempted to use financial entanglement for strategic purposes in peacetime, only to see these plans backfire in wartime; at the same time, Great Britain attempted ... read more
An Austrian Solution for Ukraine?
*Stephen F. Szabo* *Ukraine, Europe* It is a time for cold realism rather than an outdated nostalgia for American exceptionalism. After World War II, Austria, like Germany, was divided between the Western powers and the Soviet Union. As any viewer of *The Third Man* film knows, Vienna, like Berlin, had four occupation zones. In contrast to the solution for Germany, the Western powers and the Soviet Union agreed to a state treaty in 1955 which resulted in Austria being unified and neutral. It produced the withdrawal of Soviet and Western forces from Austria, the only time the USS... read more
These Five Rifles Will Survive Even Apocalyptic Scenarios
*Richard Douglas* *Assault Rifle, United States* A survival rifle should be durable. You’re going to be on the move (a lot) and your rifle will get hit. Plus, you may not have access to replacement parts for your weapon. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *We judge these rifles and rank them the best when considering weight, accuracy, and durability. In the space of only a few weeks, the United States changed forever. Sports leagues suspended their seasons. Entire industries were forced to shutter their doors. Jobs were lost. Food shelves were emptied. A global pandemic, COVID-1... read more
A Black Swan Event Takes Kazakhstan By Storm
*Sukhayl Niyazov* *Kazakhstan Unrest, Central Asia* Predicting Black Swans is futile; instead, a system should be liberalized in order to be able to provide venues for expressing citizens’ views, preventing discontent from hiding under the surface. In Kazakhstan, transformation of initially peaceful protests into a full-blown revolt against the government has caught many observers off guard—and this should not be surprising, considering the sheer magnitude and rarity of ongoing demonstrations. The failure to foresee this unrest makes it possible to classify it as a fat-tail event... read more
Can Price Controls Solve Inflation Woes?
*Rainer Zitelmann* *Inflation, * Price controls are not the solution to any problem, they actually make the problems much worse. All over the world, prices are rising. Inflation is back. As are calls for government price controls. Fearing protests against rising energy prices, the French government has set maximum prices for gas and electricity. Turkey has been hit particularly hard by inflation. One reason is that even the semblance of independence of Turkey’s central bank has been eliminated—President Recep Tayyip Erdogan determines how high interest rates (and interest rates ... read more

Commentaries, Analysis, And Editorials On The Unrest In Kazakhstan -- January 8, 2022
*Paul Bartlett, Moscow Times:* *Kazakhstan Wakes Up* There has long been a disconnect between what Kazakhstan's government wants to offer the public and what the people need. It’s been a while coming but Kazakhstan has finally woken up, with alarming scenes of government buildings in flames and thousands of protesters filling the streets and clashing with security forces coming out of Almaty, Kazakhstan’s commercial hub. In scenes quickly replicated across the country, protesters, initially fired up by fuel price hikes that came into effect on Jan. 1, took to the streets. ... read more

The three white men convicted of murdering Ahmaud Arbery were sentenced Friday to life in prison, with a judge denying any chance of parole for the father and son who armed themselves and initiated the deadly pursuit of the Black man in February 2020. The life sentences for Travis McMichael, who fatally shot Arbery, and his father, Gregory McMichael, do not carry the possibility of parole. Is Israel’s Operation Persia Underway?
The successive Israeli military offensives against Gaza and the West Bank have always been protected by the “vortex of silence” of the main world mass media controlled by the transnational Israeli lobby, a theory formulated by the German political scientist Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann in her book “The Vortex of Silence. It was good content, him firing everybody, stroking checks, and hanging out in skyscrapers. Made me laugh. His ... read more

The Glock 48 Is a Great Option for Concealed Carry
*Richard Douglas* *Firearms, United States* The Glock 48 was designed with concealed carry in mind. The low profile makes it easy to conceal without issues like printing. *Here's What You Need to Know: *The Glock 48 even feels more comfortable to carry than the Glock 19. The Glock 19 has become one of the most popular guns in the world for concealed carry. It’s relatively small, holds fifteen rounds in the magazine, and is pretty comfortable to shoot. It’s been this way for a while, but Glock has an array of offerings for anyone that wants something a little different. The Glock... read more
The Army is Turning Robotic Combat Vehicles into Tank Hunters
*Kris Osborn* *Robotic Combat Vehicles, United States* Robotic combat vehicles could field Javelin missiles, but also might deploy with Hellfire or Stinger missiles in later tests. The Army is arming robots with anti-tank missiles to destroy enemy armored vehicles. This capability could prove decisive in tank battles and keep manned vehicles away from incoming enemy fire. While decisions requiring the use of lethal force will still be made by humans, forward-positioned Robotic Combat Vehicles can now be armed with Javelin anti-tank missiles as well as cannons, grenade launchers,... read more

*Kyle Mizokami* *Arms Sales, Asia* India has been a big buyer of Russian weapons for 50 years. India’s defense contracts with Russia have consistently suffered delays and cost overruns. And the resulting hardware doesn’t always work. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Ideological and financial concerns mean there are a lot of things India won’t buy from the United States or Europe, leaving Russia as their sole source of weapons. Like a lot of countries, India wants the best weapons it can afford. But ideological and financial concerns mean there are a lot of things it won’t bu... read more
Thirty Years Later, the Army's M1 Abrams Is Still Unstoppable
*Kyle Mizokami* *M1 Abrams, * The development of the M1 Abrams is a classic study into how competing requirements can collide with one another. The trifecta of tank power, firepower, protection and mobility all required some level of compromise. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *The M1 has proven an adaptable tank capable of fighting from the rolling hills of southern Germany to the deserts of Iraq. And yet the tank appeared to be a failure at first, caught in a tug-of-war of competing, varied interests that threatened to sink the project completely. The M1 Abrams main battle ... read more

The telescope, based near Albuquerque, New Mexico, snapped an image of (22) Kalliope, an asteroid in space, as well as its satellite, a smaller asteroid called Linus, which is about 21 miles in diameter. *Fox News:* *Jan. 6 anniversary: MSNBC invites historian to invoke the Holocaust, backs comparisons to 9/11, Pearl Harbor* *Historian and TV pundit Douglas Brinkley says Jan. 6 'has to be a crusade that's every day'* There seems to be a competition among the leftist to see who can make the dumbest analogy to the Jan. 6 riot. Heck, it wasn't even as bad as a 1983 bombing of the Capitol. It was not as bad as Antifa and BLM riots in the summer of 2020. The Meaning of the Term: “Triumph of the West”
When the Western historians describe the last three hundred years, when the Western empires became pre-eminent, they tend to use the phrase “the triumph of the West”. What do they mean by the word “triumph”? The word “triumph” originated in Ancient Rome. The Romans did not use this word to indicate their victory—they used it to indicate the utter subjugation and annihilation of the losing side. The Roman triumph was the celebration of a successful plunder and genocide. The victorious Roman generals used to organize spectacular parades called “Roman triumph” in the streets of Rome. ... read more
What Are The Lessons From The Trump-Backed Insurrection Of January 6?
A year ago today, a fascist mob took over the US Capitol building in Washington, D.C., stunning the country and the entire world. Called to action by Donald Trump and instigated by his false accusation that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, the mob stormed the building and briefly stopped the certification of the electoral college votes. The attack would not have been possible without collusion from high-level military, police and security officials. Yet, none of them have been brought to justice. At the same time, Congress formed a special committee on January 6... read more
