More reminiscent of the Chinese design with the weight balanced to the center and only needing to balance one axis instead of 2 while not needing to carry... read more

Security remained largely the same for the 7th week in Iraq. Incidents by the Islamic State remained in the teens and there was one attack by Pro-Iran forces. There were a total of 15 incidents reported in the media in Iraq from November 8-14. That compared to 20 the week before. One of those was by pro-Iran groups. They hit a logistics convoy working for the U.S. in Diwaniya. Since the October elections these factions have dramatically cut back their operations. There used to be several attacks a week but now there is only about one per week. They seem to be more focused ... read more

Congress Can Disrupt Syrian Captagon Smuggling
*Caroline Rose* *Syria, Middle East* The Captagon trade has rapidly accelerated into a regional Mediterranean challenge that demands increased attention from the United States and its regional partners The 2022 National Authorization Act (NDAA) will soon go to the Senate for a vote, and with it, an amendment that seeks to address one of the most ignored byproducts of the Assad regime’s rule in Syria: the Captagon drug trade. While the illicit trade of Captagon, an amphetamine-type substance, has emanated from Syria for years, there has been a recent, noticeable shift that deman... read more

A potentially huge development in shipping containers
As we've discussed in recent weeks, one of the biggest problems in dealing with supply chain issues is where to store emptied shipping containers and how to move them from where they've been unloaded, back to US ports, and thence back across the Pacific to China to be loaded with more goods. There are literally hundreds of thousands of shipping containers effectively stuck in limbo in this country, because there aren't enough road and rail vehicles available to move them to the ports, and not enough space on container ships to take them back overseas. Meanwhile, they occupy s... read more

Emergency Powers Reform Within Grasp
(Ben Schumin/https://flic.kr/p/2js3okB/CC BY-SA 2.0/https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/) The National Emergencies Act (NEA) was one of the great failures of the 1970s reforms to the presidency. The NEA sought to discipline the dozens of presidential emergency power authorizations in the U.S. Code by empowering Congress to terminate emergency declarations by concurrent resolution. But the Supreme Court’s invalidation of the legislative veto in INS v. Chadha (1983) turned this NEA check on its head. Presidents ever since have exercised delegated emergency powers (and ren... read more

The censors masquerading as 'fact-checkers'
Mark Hemingway: The 2020 presidential election resulted in something I never thought I’d see — widespread, Soviet-style political censorship in American media. This censorship still dominates our discourse a year later, with no end in sight. There’s a lot to be said about how we got to this place, but it’s worth zeroing in on the two particular mechanisms for how this censorship is being enforced. The first is the rise of politicized media “fact-checkers,” and the second is Facebook. The fact these two entities have now joined forces means speaking freely online without an algori... read more
