Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog - 11 hours ago
*The New York Times* has a report on differences between American history textbooks used in California and Texas. The books have the same publisher. They credit the same authors. But they are customized for students in different states, and their contents sometimes diverge in ways that reflect the nation’s deepest partisan divides.... A California panel asked the publisher McGraw-Hill to avoid the use of the word “massacre” when describing 19th-century Native American attacks on white people. A Texas panel asked Pearson to point out the number of clergy who signed the Declaration o... more »

This NATO Member Regrets Buying America's F-35 Stealth Fighter

David Axe at The National Interest - 11 hours ago
*David Axe* *Security, Europe* When it comes to the F-35 and U.S.-European defense collaboration, just one thing would make the Americans even happier. The Danes buying even more F-35s. *Key point:* The radar-evading warplane probably wasn’t the best choice for an air arm that struggles to maintain adequate aerial capacity for a meaningful contribution to international security. The U.S. ambassador to Denmark wants the Nordic country to buy more American-designed F-35 stealth fighters. Ambassador Carla Sands’s advocacy for a “made-in-America” warplane should come as no surprise... more »

Here's Why George Patton Sent American Bombers To Attack A Hawaiian Volcano

Sebastien Roblin at The National Interest - 11 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *History, Americas* A crazy plan. Key point: Disaster seemed imminent: day by day, a glowing river of molten lava was creeping steadily towards Hilo, Hawaii. The town of 15,000 lay slightly over 30 miles northeast of Mauna Loa, known as the second-largest volcano on the planet. The over 13,000-foot tall behemoth had erupted on Hawaii island on November 21. By December, Dr. Thomas Jaggar, a local volcanologist and founder of the Hawaii Volcano Observatory, estimated that one of the five streams of lava issuing from Mauna Loa was advancing at a mile per minute... more »

Vaping Gives Lung Bacteria the Power to Cause More Damage to Your Body

Deirdre Gilpin, Michael Tunney at The National Interest - 11 hours ago
*Deirdre Gilpin, Michael Tunney* *Health, Americas* [image: Reuters] Exposing bacteria to vape is likely to make already harmful bacteria more dangerous and carry the same risk as exposure to cigarette smoke. Bacteria commonly found in the lungs become more harmful and cause more inflammation when they have been exposed to e-cigarette vapour, in a way that could lead to diseases such as COPD and asthma. Chronic lung disease results from a complex interplay between infection and inflammation, which can be further complicated by the toxic effects of cigarette smoke. We know that c... more »

Killing the Antiwar Message Along With the Messenger

Karen Garcia at Sardonicky - 11 hours ago
It's better to hate Tucker Carlson than to hate war. That's the theme of Frank Bruni's latest New York Times column, in which he accuses naive peace-loving progressives of developing a crush on the Fox News personality for his audacious antiwar messaging and his critique of Donald Trump's assassination of Quassim Soleimani. *Suddenly you’re digging him. We think doing more will get us more satisfaction, success, etc. When oftentimes the exact opposite is true. Less can be far more rewarding in the long run. There's An Open Montana Congressional Seat Waiting For A Progressive Democrat

There's a red hot 2020 race for Montana's one at-large congressional district to replace pugilistic multimillionaire Greg Gianforte. Last October we met up with Tom Winter, the progressive in the race. The DCCC and EMILY's List think they've found their very own next Jeff Van Drew-- Kathleen Williams-- and they will do anything to defeat Winter, if for no other reason, to own the libs. I asked Tom to write another guest post for us, one that will help us understand what's going on in Montana in regard to his race, one that the national media has been almost completely ignoring. ... more »

Why Invading Iran Would Be a Military Disaster (Worse Than Vietnam)

Reid Pauly, Daniel Khalessi at The National Interest - 12 hours ago
*Reid Pauly, Daniel Khalessi* *Security, Middle East* What would a war with Iran look like? In sum, it would be the gravest mistake in U.S. foreign policy since the Vietnam War. Yes, even worse than the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In the wake of a rollercoaster week of escalatory and de-escalatory signaling between the United States and Iran, both sides appear to have taken a step back from the abyss. For nearly three decades, the F-15 Eagle fighter was considered the undisputed king of the skies. The recent revelation that North Korea has intercontinental ballistic missiles put America on notice: within a few short years, or even months, the entire continental United States will be within range of Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons. barovsky at The New Dark Age - 15 hours ago
For the last generation, the United States and other capitalist countries have been on a steady trajectory towards despotism. With 9/11 and the resulting return to the Cold War’s atmosphere of perpetual conflict, a change appeared in the prevailing aims of the capitalist governments. Whereas capitalist societies generally assumed they could look forward to an increasingly liberal future after the breakup of the Soviet Union and the easing of war tensions, but what’s happened throughout the 21st century is a shift towards less and less freedom.

On Four Types of Rules

The rules of science are discovered; the rules of philosophy are devised; the rules of religion are divined; the rules of politics are developed.

Sunday Morning Links

This and that for your Sunday reading. - Gary Younge writes about the need to respond to a bleak reality with the dedication to imagine and create something better. And Vickie Cammack and Donna Thomson highlight how the response to a climate breakdown includes mobilizing our capacity to care for others. - CBC News talks to John Pomeroy about the effects of a changing climate on Saskatchewan agriculture - and particularly the dangers to the province's water supply. - But Nick Cohen weighs in on the reality denial of the right-wing government and media in Australia (which of course... more »

Daily Military And Intelligence News Briefs -- January 12, 2020

*The Guardian:* *How strong is Iran's military? * Country has shaped an ‘axis of resistance’ with proxy forces and influence in Middle East There has been a calibrated de-escalation of tensions between the US and Iran, after a drone strike killed General Qassem Suleimani, the second most powerful man in Iran and most influential military commander in the region. Missile strikes on US bases allowed Iran to claim it had responded in kind, without causing any American casualties that could have prompted a further US attack. But there is little expectation that this will be the end ... more »

"But beneath this veneer and vortex...," poem by Hugh Mann

Jane Burgermeister at BIRDFLU666 WORDPRESS BLOG CONTINUES HERE - 15 hours ago
*WHAT IS REALITY?* * Reality is multilayered. Beneath the veneer of everyday life, lies a violent, vexing vortex of biology, chemistry, and physics. But beneath this veneer and vortex, lies God's cerebral cortex, which texts and tests our mettle. Our task is to illuminate reality by collating its layers, while retaining our civility, humility, humanity, and sanity.* *Best regards,* *Hugh Mann*

RAIN BRINGS RELIEF TO FIREFIGHTERS IN AUSTRALIA. GOD LEAVES HIS CALLING CARD...

Jane Burgermeister at BIRDFLU666 WORDPRESS BLOG CONTINUES HERE - 15 hours ago
*Perhaps as an encourage to Prince Charles and Willaim as they appear to attempt a new approach to protecting the environment which does not focus on wiping out 99.99% of the people, and hot on the heels of Charles' video expressing empathy for Australians, rain has suddenly appeared in Autralia to quench the bush fires.* *God is real, dear readers.* *Let's hope the tortured royals turn their lives around. Greed, deceit and overweaning ambition do not bring us happiness. Using St Paisios spiritual counsels, they can still reinvent themselves, also as efficient executives managing ... more »

The TAAPs gather in Sandringham to plot more mischief

Eugenicist depopulation Globalist kingpins are set to huddle together on Monday to discuss their family breakdown in the comfortable surroundings of Sandringham. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-51077816 *The defection of Prince Harry may have been an unintended consequence of the British freemasons plot to put lunie tunie Trump into office in the USA using blackmail etc. If the warring American freemason faction (Clinton, Obama) did not have to wake up to Trump every morning, threatening them and the country with war, nuclear war, economic meltdown, martial law, they may not have gone ... more »

Battle damage at U.S. base in Iraq after Iran's missile attack

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 15 hours ago
In an exclusive report from an airbase where the US soldiers are based in Iraq, CNN described the extent of the damage to the base from Iran's missiles as unimaginable. The US claimed that no one was killed which is a bit hard to imagine considering the battle damage. An Iranian military report suggested that nine planes were needed to transfer the dead and wounded to hospitals in Israel. If this was true then it is clear that the Pentagon did not want to transport the dead and wounded back to the US. I've seen a couple of reports indicating that 80 were killed and about 200 wo... more »

On The Philosophical Bulls In The China Shop

Unknown at The Verma Report - 15 hours ago
The 20th century was the age of philosophy movements. It saw the rise of a number of movements which were founded by intellectuals who had too much confidence in their own abilities. They were convinced that they were the raging bulls of philosophy—that they would demolish the china shop of all the dominant philosophies and make people accept a new worldview. But in the arena, there is a matador for every bull and likewise is the situation in the field of philosophy. The philosophical bulls were quickly cut down to size by the matadors of philosophy and every philosophy movement foun... more »
