Better TV with Quantum Dots

What's Going On with Oil Prices? Triads And Consequences

THE PROBLEM IS US: Joan Walsh tackles the Dallas Cowboys!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 11 hours ago
*FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2015Part 3—From earth tones on to this:* Why do we say that the problem is us? That we liberals have turned out to be too dumb, too tribal, too uncaring to function in a democracy? By now, the evidence of our shortfall is overwhelmingly clear. Let’s review an example which preceded the killings in Paris this week. Let’s consider the anguished, angry post by Joan Walsh at the new Salon. (We’ll assume the piece was done in good faith—that Walsh wasn’t deliberately toying with Salon’s target audience.) Walsh was railing against Chris Christie, a favorite tribal vi... more »

The 21st Century Will Be The Most Unequal Period In Human History

Progressives think Obama could have done more-- much more-- to further the legitimate economic interests of the American working class. Others think he did as much as he could under the political constraints in Washington. His record is a mixed bag. Yesterday, the unemployment continued its downward trend, dipping to 5.6%, the best numbers since Bush tanked the economy in 2008...in fact, the best numbers since Bill Clinton was president. Despite dogged, systematic obstruction by the GOP, Obama's policies have worked to drag the country back from the brink of Republican apocalypse... more »

Widodo, the former Jakarta governor known as Jokowi who took office in October, has likened himself to a “captain trusted by the people.” He’s laid out an ambitious vision that spans the development of the fishing industry, improved port infrastructure, stronger sea defenses and better diplomacy as it deals with illegal fishing, territor... more »

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 21 hours ago
[image: Vanguard class SSBN]The Ministry of Defence has been forced to request US military assistance to track a suspected Russian submarine off the coast of Scotland. Two US Navy aircraft have been conducting anti-submarine patrols in the north Atlantic this week on the trail of a Russian vessel in the area. A Royal Navy frigate has also been dispatched. It is believed the Russian presence could be linked to the reported departure of one of the Royal Navy’s Vanguard-class nuclear submarines from Faslane naval base at Gare Loch on the River Clyde. Late last month we looked at some solutions to the devastating problems inherent in hair-trigger police brutality. Here are half a dozen from legendary New York City police detective Serpico: *1. Strengthen the selection process and psychological screening process for police recruits.* Police departments are simply a microcosm of the greater society. Airbus VS Boeing

The Airbus A350 which is the answer to the question of how big a nightmare is the dreamliner. Just looking at the chart below whats the case for buying a Dreamliner? Currently its estimated Boeing loses $45 million on every sale. This as I understand it does not include warranty costs. If the troubled introduction of this plane is any indication they are going to be substantially more than any plane in history. When I see a plane take off and slowly rise up and away I am still filled with a sense of wonder. I have flown millions of miles but not on any of the three planes abo... more »

Irony Redux Abounds (But Is Universally (Dis)Missed Except by the Clear Eyed)  Or Reasonably Paranoid
