Is Tom Steyer Asking California Democrats To Buy A Pig In A Poke?
Very expensive photo shoot California progressives were delighted yesterday when neoliberal corporate whore Gavin Newsom took himself out of consideration for the Senate seat being opened by Barbara Boxer's 2016 retirement plans. He'll have to be dealt with when he runs for governor but at least Cory Booker won't be getting a doppelgabger on Capitol Hill-- or will he? Newson claimed "unfinished work" in California. Maybe he's building tree house; he's certainly not allowed to do anything that involves Jerry Brown's Administration. Brown sees him as a shallow-- albeit ambitious-- worm... more »

Entering Tacoma
The Martin Luther King Peace Walk entered Tacoma today from the south. It was a clear and sunny one so we had a great view of Mt. Rainer in the distance. Quite a sight. All together the walk did 14 miles from near the sprawling Joint Base Lewis-McChord (Air Force and Army) to Tacoma. We are back to the Catholic Worker House in Tacoma for the night (we also stayed here the night before the walk began). Just before dinner tonight about 40 homeless people and Catholic Worker volunteers gathered for a meeting that we were able to sit in and listen to. They were discussing how the... more »

Last week's terror attacks could, and should be read as an Islamist appropriation of the anarchist tradition of the propaganda of the deed. The site’s dumbness, and its sex obsession, continue to get ramped up. Today, though, it offers a political piece whose ultimate dumbness may not be apparent. Aren't We Entitled To A Really Extraordinary President?
Last year, to encourage the best American political leaders to consider running for president, Blue America set up an ActBlue page called Why Settle? Our pitch on the page was simple: There are all sorts of characters gearing up to run for president in 2016. Conventional wisdom says that if Hillary Clinton runs, it's game-over for the Democrats and she walks away with it while everyone else cheers. That's a shame because… well, if you want to judge how she's likely to rule based on who she's surrounded herself with, we're looking at another corporate-oriented presidency akin the... more »

Counting On Oil
Falling oil prices should stimulate the world's faltering economy. But they won't do the Harper government a lot of good. That's because the Harperites have nailed their political flag to eliminating the deficit. And that has become more difficult than they anticipated. 'Top Gear' Russia Accidentally Published An Image Of A Classified Submarine
[image: AC-12 Project]The Russian edition of the automobile magazine published a photo of the classified "AC-12 Project," a nuclear deep-water submarine, nicknamed "Losharik" after a children's movie. This was first reported by the unofficial blog of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, and picked up Slon Media, which reached out to an expert for commentary. Weapons expert Vasiliy Sichev told Slon that it's extremely likely that this is the secret submarine. He told the site: Read more
Indian Navy Has 41 Ships, Submarines Under Construction: Navy Chief Dhowan
[image: Future INS Vikrant]The Indian Navy has 41 ships and submarines under construction in Indian shipyards, the Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Robin K Dhowan said in Bangalore yesterday. “The Navy’s blueprint revolves around the ‘Make in India’ concept. In fact, the country is not new to this as India’s first indigenous ship was built in 1941. The Navy, at present, has no foreign orders anywhere”, the Navy Chief said. He was speaking at the second annual Admiral R L Pereira Memorial Lecture organised by The Navy Foundation (Bengaluru), along with Bharat Electronics Limited (BE... more »
Funding New Submarines Outside the Navy?
[image: Successor class SSBN]Newport News Shipbuilding has a stake in a new and potentially divisive method for funding a future class of submarine, a project considered the Navy's top priority. At issue is how to replace the aging fleet of Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines, often referred to as "boomers," which play an increasingly important role in America's ability to deliver a nuclear punch. Replacing the Ohio-class fleet with new submarines has been deemed so important -- and so difficult to afford in tight fiscal times -- that Congress has proposed funding them outside t... more »
I am Jimmy Lai
Apple Daily publisher Jimmy Lai's home and office firebombed (Variety). The attacks occurred in the small hours of Monday morning local time, only hours after over a million people and 40 world leaders took to the streets of Paris in support of press freedom, democracy and unity. The French rallies were sparked by the execution of journalists and cartoonists last week at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. Masked men threw a small incendiary device into Lai’s home in the exclusive Kadoorie Avenue area and simultaneously threw similar flares or petrol bombs into the offices of ... more »
Navy looks to private contractors for more submarine maintenance
[image: Virginia class SSN]The Navy could enlist private shipyards to help relieve a maintenance backlog for its attack submarines, which translates into a potential opportunity for Newport News Shipbuilding. Federal budget cuts have caused staffing shortages at U.S. shipyards, according to Vice Adm. Michael Connor, commander of the Navy's submarine force, who spoke with the Associated Press. Submarine overhauls have gone from 19 months to 28 months. "That has a significant impact on the force," Connor said in an AP interview. Read more
The Geopolitics Of Rare Earths
Image Credit: Wikimedia Commons *Adam Minter, Bloomberg:* *The Geopolitics of 17 Very Obscure Minerals* *WNU Editor*: Rare earths are critical minerals used in essentially everything. China has a dominant position on these minerals because they subsidize their extraction and production to a level that makes it uneconomical for any other country/company to compete against. Will China's monopoly continue .... probably .... but they are going to be paying dearly to have that "strategic privilege" .... and one that can only be used if they decide one day to use it in a political crisis... more »
Man-made Ligament Could Replace Ruptured ACLs
[image: An illustration depicting a ruptured ACL (Image: Shutterstock)] There are obviously many possible applications within the body. The solution appears to provide a natural structure that will be indistinguishable from a natural tendon. It also means that a lot of athletes will be able to take their careers safely to their forties. After all this is what inevitably fails because you cannot feel when you have gone way too far. Lose it a couple of times and repair becomes imperfect and the career is over. You need to be 100% One of sports unfortunate secrets is the level of ... more »
The Messy Minds of Creative People
It is a lot less messy than all that. The common error though is allowing emotions into the space. Throw all that out and it is merely a two step process. The first step is to investigate the problem. This allows resources to be brought to bear that may or may not contribute. What does happen is that you perfect your understanding of the problem itself. It then nothing suggests itself, put the problem aside for a day or so or even way more. Taking it up again, often a clear path opens up. If not repeat as often as the problem interests you. Critical unsolvable... more »
Can Winter De-Icers Go Completely Green?
Road salt is an awful solution except we have been at a total loss regarding any viable alternative. Worse, it produces massive costs in damage to vehicles that is also generally ignored. All this so far hasw only been an argument for minimizing applications. We do not have a replacement that is not just as problematic. Maybe we need to have a huge prize for a successful alternative. At least that will push methods forward to early testing stages. I look at the ongoing history of oil spill cleanup and know many tries including some now after decades that hav... more »
Russian Roulette: Taxpayers Could Be on the Hook for Trillions in Oil Derivatives
[image: (Photo: Carsten ten Brink)] The shoe really has not dropped yet. Fifty dollar oil is massively damaging to the hedge fund crowd and add in that only oil provided a deep enough market to absorb all that leverage in the first place. Every bet in copper or gold can be matched ten fold in the oil market. Thus outside of financial instruments the next tier remains the oil business. It is almost like ten to one and down to another ten to one when you get to commodities. Thus derivative trading needs to be mostly in financial securities and scantly in anything else. Excep... more »
'Not safe': French Jews mull Israel emigration per BBC News whose Kevin Connolly can't bring himself to say certain words
This BBC report on why so many French Jews are leaving France and moving to Israel, manages to avoid the words Islamist, Muslim, and antisemitism. Even the Islamist terrorists who attacked the Jewish supermarket in Paris are just described as gunmen. The BBC's ability to ignore facts in order to support their chosen narrative on a story never ceases to shock me, although I am no longer surprised by it. Jews are fleeing France because they don't feel safe in a country where massive Muslim immigration has turned the low level atmosphere of anti Semitism, that has long existed in Fra... more »
What a coincidence. Ko's parents under investigation for tax evasion
*The view from the Miaoli 51-1.* New Mayor Ko Wen-je of Taipei is making a splash. Not only did he stir up discussion in China with his simple ways, some of the local citizens are asking why their mayors can't be more like Ko. Very refreshing. I'm sure it is just a coincidence that since he beat the KMT in the election the tax office is investigating his parents. Yes, surely the KMT would never use the governmental apparatus to punish the opposition. Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je expressed dismay Monday that Taiwan's tax bureau is going after his parents for possible tax evasion because o... more »
Doing your duty
I heard this item on the BBC World Service early this morning. It’s here, quite prominently promoted on the BBC News website. Kevin Connolly has interviewed some French Jews about why they’ve decided to move to Israel. Nothing very revelatory here. No mention of who or what is behind the antisemitism that has made French Jews feel so uneasy that they’ve made a life-changing decision to move away from the country of their birth, their language, their culture, to somewhere they feel less ‘other’. I can’t say safer, of course because no-one in Israel has the luxury of feeling ‘safe.’... more »

Aliyah Rose: All French Jews Have Considered Moving to Israel, says Goldberg
Jeffrey Goldberg on The Charlie Rose Show, January 12, 2015. Speaking tonight to Charlie Rose about recent events in Paris, Jeffrey Goldberg said that "there is already tension between the Israeli government and the French government" over the issue of Jewish emigration. During their conversation, Rose brought up comments made Sunday by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a
