Mario Cuomo (1932-2015)
*by Ken*
Some of these passings are really hard, and this is a really hard one.
Because Mario Cuomo was a politician and a genuinely decent human being. He
respected people and understood the role government had to play in
improving their lives. There aren't a lot of pols, especially not those who
rise to a station like three-term governor of New York State, who by
example can make a person feel better about the human race.
Of course Mario (it just seems like he'd want us to think of him as Mario)
was also incredibly smart and hard-working. And for all of that, his record

Tonight's Movie: Hitler - The Rise of Evil
From *Wikipedia*: Hitler: The Rise of Evil is a Canadian TV miniseries in
two parts, directed by Christian Duguay and produced by Alliance Atlantis.
It explores Adolf Hitler's rise and his early consolidation of power during
the years after World War I and focuses on how the embittered, politically
fragmented and economically buffeted state of German society following the
war made that ascent possible. The film also focuses on Ernst Hanfstaengl's
influence on Hitler's rise to power. The miniseries, which premiered
simultaneously in May 2003 on CBC in Canada and CBS in the United St... more »

What's Next For Staten Island?
"We," said Jon Stewart, getting more *serious* last month than one usually
expects, "are definitely not living in a post-racial society." What he
didn't say-- and couldn't have known as the time-- is that the D.A.
responsible for failing to get a Grand Jury indictment against the cop who
murdered Eric Garner on camera, Dan Donovan, would be propelled-- largely
because of that failure in the polarized racial atmosphere of Staten
Island-- into the front-runner position for the congressional seat being

Cancer Lies
Cancer fundamentally involves mutations in DNA. Cancer rates are growing
globally. Cancer rates are growing because our environment is becoming more
genotoxic.
For years our medical authorities have blamed cancer on hereditary and
lifestyle choices, such as smoking. These factors do indeed help predict
the likelihood of an individual getting cancer, particularly smoking.
Smoking is an environmental cause of cancer over which we have some control.
However, most environmental causes of cancer are hard to control because
they derive from genotoxins in our air, food, water, cosmetics, ... more »

Auto-correct Changes "Schumer" To "Schemer"-- Remember How Schumer Saved Wall Street Executive Pay Excesses With His Say On Pay Scheme?
I had dinner with an old friend the other day, visiting from Wall Street,
where he works with banksters on compliance issues-- although, more often
than not, on banksters trying to make it *look* like they're complying with
the law while running end games around those very laws and rules. At one
point he started cursing out New York's Senator, Chuck Schumer, recipient,
since 1990, of $20,721,989 in legalistic bribes ("campaign contributions")
from the Finance Sector, more than any other Member of Congress other than
3 presidential candidates, Obama, McCain and Hillary Clinton. Schu... more »
Syriza-led Greece shouldn't get a penny
A financially collapsing Greece has been damaging the world markets
throughout 2011 before the country bankrupted in Spring 2012. Center-right
Antonis Samaras (New Democracy) became the prime minister in June 2012.
Since that moment, Greece was pretty much going in the right direction. It
even managed to achieve a modest budget surplus.
I should have written about those relative successes. We should have
praised them because this anomalous era of relative sanity may soon be
over. A few days ago, the Parliament gave less than 60% of votes to Stavros

To Be Great, Be Whole....A Poem by Fernando Pessoa
*To be great, be whole.*
*Exclude nothing, exaggerate nothing that is not you.*

*Because it blooms up above.*

Simply Producing More Books Isn't The Answer
What happens when the amount of books available to read exceeds the
market’s ability to read them! We have always struggled with more books
than buyers. The economics of market forces has always prevailed, choking
back on production, shrinking shelf space and reducing the rewards to those
who aspire to make fame and fortune from their writing.
It was simple when we only had the physical book. The market was controlled
by the shelf space available, the cost of the inventory and the rate of
purchases. We still produced more titles and units than could be purchased,
but for those wh... more »

Tony Bloody Blair, Again
Like a grinning whack-a-mole, Tony Bloody Blair has popped up again with
his ever-so-helpful pearls of wisdom. The groove hasn't changed for 20
years. Centre ground, blah blah, too leftwing blah, don't scare business. *Someone
pass me a mallet*. In his *Economist* interview, he suggested that
left/right battles are always won by the Conservatives. The not so subtle
subtext being the Labour's "leftism" disarms the party and it will lose.

Apple Gives Free 14 Right to Cancel in EU
We could never understand why Amazon allowed ebooks to be returned and
found it very frustrating when every month one always appeared in the
Kindle reports. Was it a lost sale? Did they not read what the work was

it unwanted? Did they read it and then returned it for their money back on
a free read? We will never know as Amazon doesn’t say.
Now just to raise the questions further Apple has just started to allow
European users of their iTunes stores to “return” goods without giving a
reason.

Scott Aaronson and sheer lunacy of U.S. academic feminism
Larry Summers is a 90% feminist. In fact, he was giving a proof of these

talking about his two twin daughters. He was educating them in a "gender
neutral" way so he bought them trucks. (Enough for 99% Czechs to consider
him a victim of a craze.) One girl placed a smaller truck on top of a

Are You Sensitive to Gluten, or Just Roundup?

Birds 'Heard Tornadoes Coming'
We had already come to the conclusion that bird flocks share mind to mind
communication. Now they step it up and add precognition and take immediate
evasive action.
A full day is far too long to comfortably anticipate a storm full of
tornadoes as the physical evidence is all upwind and still slight. Such
evidence needs to be far more robust to convince anyway. Yet we need to
expect subtle signals somehow providing noise. Infra sound from active
tornadoes could do it, but we do not know here if that is the case here.
Not enough data to close this one but suggestive anyway. Bi... more »
