"Star clusters are among the most visually alluring and astrophysically fascinating objects in the sky. One of the most spectacular nestles deep in the southern skies near the Southern Cross in the constellation of Crux. The Kappa Crucis Cluster, also known as NGC 4755 or simply the "Jewel Box" is just bright enough to be seen with the unaided eye. It was given its nickname by the English astronomer John Herschel in the 1830s because the striking color contrasts of its pale blue and orange stars seen through a telescope reminded Herschel of a piece of exotic jewelry. “We all know that something is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars... everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings. All the greatest people ever lived have been telling us that for five thousand years and yet you’d be surprised how people are always losing hold of it. There’s something way down deep that’s eternal about every human being." - Thornton Wilder

Demise of Ancient Rapa Nui Civilization Linked to European Contact

Let us make it simple. Population collapse was brought about everywhere by* pirate slaving *which went completely unrecorded and never checked until the nineteenth century. Four or five trips by one pirate would clean the island out. worse, this happened everywhere including north America. All this led the general population collapses. Disease certainly helped but i see no reason to make it decisive either. After all, recovery has the advantage of resources and communal determination to avoid a repetition. Orichalcum Recovered from 2,600-year-old Shipwreck?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 hour ago
It may or may not be Orichalcum, but it is a clear window into ancient metallurgy and is in ingot form for further reworking. I am more inclined to think that orichalcum was a pretty clean copper gold alloy that could be used even as a veneer on a bronze casting or its like. Once the veneer had been applied, it is a matter of gentle rubbing with an organic acid to slowly dissolve away copper while spreading out the gold itself until the entire surface was covered in gold. Additional polishing would maintain the gold coat during the lifetime of the object. We are starting to ge... more »

This is an extremely important revelation. We have effective multiple confirmation of carbon 14 dates that essentially overlaps full human presence on this planet from 200,000 BP through the present. It is not just one anomaly either but a consistent finding for partially unpetrified bone and also apparently some petrified bone. Now this may mean that our C - 14 theory is even less reliable than ever thought. Yet i do not think so at all. After all we also have additional cultural evidence for triceratops at least into recent times. Our best conjecture is that remnant popu... more »

Spirit seems to move though me and let me see answers to questions I did not even know I had. I continue to be humbled by the deep wisdom that resides in my questions. Trying out the broadfork

risa bear at A Way to Live - 5 hours ago
The broadfork, invented by John Jeavons, is not a plow. The idea is not to turn over the earth but to lift it, creating pathways for aeration and draining. Our soil is a heavy clay, despite our having added maybe about 700 wheelbarrow loads of organic matter. I have to stand on the fork's step and waggle myself to get the tines in deep enough. But then comes the lift, which is simply a matter of pulling the handles toward you and then leaning down on them. Ergonomically this is near perfect, and it's a joy to see the two-foot wide clumps of earth rise up and settle back at about a tw... more »

Our NHS is short of £5bn a year. But rival countries' public/private mix costs them even more

Hari at Ripped-off Britons - 6 hours ago
We're told we'd need to find an extra £5bn every year to be able to afford an NHS that maintains standards, free at the point of delivery. We're told it's only possible if we allow the private sector to take on more of our healthcare delivery. We're told that other countries, including the progressive lefty ones, use a mix of public and private to be able to afford modern healthcare.

Paul Craig Roberts (slightly edited for this over view): “The new principle in Europe that the IMF has relentlessly applied to Latin American and Third World debtors, is that when foreign lenders make mistakes and over-lend to foreign governments, loading them up with debt, the bankers’ mistakes are rectified by robbing the poor populations. Pensions, social services, and public employment are cut, valuable resources are sold off to foreigners for pennies on the dollar, and the government is forced to support US foreign policy. The EU and the euro were deception and trickery. Countries lost their sovereignty. So much for Western 'self-rule,' 'freedom,' and 'democracy.' In the entire West there is nothing but the looting of people by the One Percent who control the governments. In America, the looting does not rely on indebtedness because the US dollar is the reserve currency and the US can print all the money needed in order to pay its bills and redeem its debt. In America the looting of labor has been through jobs offshoring.”

So complacent and blasé are such pseudo-journos, they'd arrogantly assumed that quaint old notion of ethics with regard to conflict of interests in reporting was no longer relevant. Why Has There Been A Dramatic Drop In Car Bombs In Iraq?

Car bombs (Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices – VBIEDs) have been one means to track the growth and operational strength of the Islamic State (IS). VBIEDs require supply systems to provide explosives and cars, intelligence gathering to find targets, and means to plant the bombs. In 2012 there was a dramatic increase in the use of car bombs marking IS’s return from its nadir in 2011. At the end of 2014 leading into the new year there has been just as sharp a drop in the number of VBIEDs deployed. After six years of crippling austerity, imposed by neo-liberal zombies and implemented by visionless, careerist politicians, roughly 37% of the Greek electorate chose the far-left Syriza Party to chart another path. Greek voters swung to the once-marginal left-wing party after five years of punishing austerity measures demanded under €240 billion (about $336 billion Cdn) bailout deals threw hundreds of thousands of people out of work and left nearly a third of the country without state health insurance. Lazear on Wage Stagnation

Jobs in these industries pay 29% and 24%, respectively, above the economy mean. Because a smaller share of labor is working those high-wage industries, the typical job in the economy is now lower-paying than in 2010.... So what accounts for the relative decline in jobs in high-wage hospitals and finance? One obvious possibility is increased regulation. Foreigners in Ukraine- Swedes with Azov battalion & American Mercs. Indeed!

Penny at Penny for your thoughts - 1 day ago
We are always getting so called news about Russian troops in Ukraine. Unfounded of course. I can't see any reason for Russia to send troops into Ukraine, myself. *So let us speak and read of the foreigners in Ukraine, fighting alongside the Ukie fighters.* Some of you may have seen the American masquerading as a Ukrainian soldier at Saker's blog? I will embed that video at the bottom of this post. However, let's take a look at one recently deceased, Swede, obviously a neo nazi or skin head of some sort- "volunteering" in Ukraine- Yah, I laugh. This guy was no 'volunteer'. He is clea... more »

(because there is so little foreign news in the Irving press, I have touched on some in the last part of this blog, under XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX) Free-world leaders are united in their grief over the death of the King of Saudi Arabia. Britain has lowered flags to half-mast. Many, including Obama, will visit Saudi Arabia to express their condolences. Stephen Harper is torn by grief. This is something from Alice in Wonderland. All the world's blubbering hypocrites are joined in grief over the death of King Abdullah, ruler of the world's most savage dictatorship... more »

Of Corsi

jurassicpork at Welcome Back to Pottersville - 1 day ago
As is always the case in my nearly decade-long odyssey of blogging, just when I try to hang up my brickbat, *of course* some right wing assclown always comes along and pulls me right back in. In this case, it's Jerome Corsi. Yesterday morning, I was treated to the news that Jerome Corsi, he of the *Obamanation *series of books (Yes, another one is out, entitled *Obamanation II: Judgment Day*. Maybe he's going for a Jerry Bruckheimer movie deal where an over-the-hill Arnold Schwarzenegger will play David Duke) is now following me on Twitter. Surely, there must be some ... more »

*Illinois' Wrong Turn on Common Core* Earlier this week, Rev. James Meeks announced on on WLS 890 AM that he had been chosen by Governor Bruce Rauner to be the new chairman of the State Board of Education. During the interview Tuesday morning, Rev. Meeks’ said, “We have to have a Common Core Curriculum in the state of Illinois.” That statement set off alarm bells within me. Although Meeks, a Democrat, headed the Senate Education Committee while in the state senate, and bucked his party by advocating for vouchers and charter schools — a noble and outstanding thing to do — Meek’s u... more »

*Allan guest post* Since September 2014, seven US Iraq War resisters have received negative decisions in their cases. Two veterans were given removal dates (i.e., dates by which they must leave the country). One resister received a stay of removal and the government rescinded the second removal order at the last minute. These reprieves are extremely good news, but war resisters and their loved ones continue to feel stress and uncertainty. The timing of these initial negative decisions was odd. After no movement on any cases for more than a year, seven cases — allegedly independent o... more »

Consecutive and concurrent sentences

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 1 day ago
Cumulative punishments are known as consecutive sentences. This only applies to jail sentences, all other sentences run concurrently. All sentences are presumed to be served concurrently. The Code provides for cumulative punishments at section 718.3: 718.3 ... *Cumulative punishments* (4) The court or youth justice court that sentences an accused may direct that the terms of imprisonment that are imposed by the court or the youth justice court or that result from the operation of subsection 734(4) or 743.5(1) or (2) shall be served consecutively, when (a) the accused is sentenced... more »

Greece: Exit Polls Indicate Big Win for Syriza

Penny at Penny for your thoughts - 1 day ago
Because we can't forget about Greece! The latest and a relink. *The Latest!-Exit polls signal big Syriza win* The polls indicate that Syriza took between 36% and 38% of the total vote, with the ruling New Democracy party a distant second with 26%-28%. It is unclear whether Syriza has enough votes to govern the country alone. Syriza's Alexis Tsipras has pledged to renegotiate Greece's debt arrangement with international creditors. He has also vowed to reverse many of the austerity measures adopted by Greece since a series of bailouts began in 2010. The result is being closely wat... more »

*"Not so fast, Herr Guggenheim..."* *Why Did the Third Reich Produce a Multi-Million Mark Titanic Pre-Make During the Worst Phase of Fighting in World War II for Germany?* Three essential things you need to know about the Nazi "Titanic" (1943) that set it apart and make it unique amongst all other Big Screen representations of Titanic; all three are solidly grounded in historic truth, and all three are almost totally unknown to the general population, but would certainly have been very familiar indeed to the senior Nazi Leadership, in addition to two-times First Sea Lord Winston S... more »

Greeks have spoken: we want to nullify debt, live as Prince of Monaco, avoid work

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 1 day ago
*Your counterparts in Zimbabwe want the same thing* *Will the freeloaders finally be given the finger?* Greeks have been living well beyond their means for several generations. Responsible politicians whom mature, sensible voters could pick went extinct a long time ago - maybe during the life of Pythagoras. When Greece was using its own currency, the drachma, the invisible hand of the free markets was able to fix some of the harmful trends. The increasing nominal salaries paid by the populist governments were translated to less quickly increasing real incomes because the drachma was ... more »
