It's hard to think of many more inspiriting musical greetings than the start of Johann Strauss II's "Tales from the Vienna Woods"

*Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra play the Waltz King's Tales from the Vienna Woods -- and with an actual zither for the zither solo at 1:56! (Not all conductors and orchestras use an actual zither. The zither version is much more piquant than the schmaltzy alternative for solo-string ensemble.)* *by Ken* By the time music started coming out of the headphones I was already thinking there wasn't going to be music after all, just odd assorted beeps and blips and a background of hiss. The first time, the offer of music had been a surprise, and oddly assorted though the ... more »

The writer sees the shootings not as a result of the teaching of Muhammed, but as a result of the collapse of Muslim society - and the resulting distortion of what Muhammed taught. I think he's right. Worse, I think one could made exactly the same case about the collapse of the Christian faith caused by a social crisis in the Western world. Unity Rally in Paris Photo Op + Free Speech Hypocrisy Controversy

The current set-up allows for some exposure of new ideas and online connection between friends and family. However, it is also a major surveillance tool and a boon to behavioral psychological researchers observing in secret. It turns out, human behavior (the most highly studied topic of all time) is so pathetically predictable - especially on social media - that its direction and influence can be cracked using a mathematical algorithm. But on Thursday, the central bank shocked the financial world by abruptly abandoning it. More than three years ago, the Swiss National Bank announced that it would not allow the Swiss franc to fall below 1.20 to the euro, and it has spent a mountain of money defending that peg. But now that it looks like the EU is going to launch a very robust quantitative easing program, the Swiss Na... more »

CPS Investigating Parents for Letting Kids Walk Home Alone

Joshua Krause By all appearances, Daniel and Alexander Meitiv are smart, responsible parents who want to instill independence in their children. They don’t like to throw caution to the wind, but they do believe that kids should be granted some freedom, so that they may learn how to take care of themselves from an early age. They practice what’s known as “free range parenting” as opposed to hovering over their kids and showering them with fear and paranoia like most parents do these days. Unfortunately, their attempts to instill responsibility and self-reliance in their children h... more »

The Dying of the Trees

What Is Sustainable at What Is Sustainable - 5 hours ago
Long, long ago, before the 1970s, thousands of people would make a springtime pilgrimage to the Catoctin woods of Maryland to enjoy the flowering dogwood trees. Today, the tourists no longer come, because 79 percent of the dogwoods are dead, and the rest are dying. A mystery fungus created a rapidly spreading blight, which penetrated the bark and blocked the flow of water and nutrients. It killed new dogwood seedlings. The experts were puzzled. Could the trees have been weakened by acid rain, smog, increased UV radiation, or a changing climate? The dogwood die-off captured the...more »

The Saudis understand that the market is been flooded with oil and that fifty dollar oil will force at least some of that flood to be stemmed. Trust Teachers

Sent to the Washington Post, Jan 14. A new proposal for the revision of the federal education law calls for annual testing to see how students are progressing, to allow teachers "to diagnose and help their students." ("AFT backs annual testing, with an asterisk," Jan 14). The proposal is saying, in other words, that teacher evaluations of students means nothing: We should value scores on a single test constructed by distant strangers more than the judgments of professionals who work with students every day. Those who place high value on standardized test results should trust the comp... more »

Molly's Kitchen Sink Writing Problem

I've had a review of 'Pierre-Joseph Proudhon', one of George Woodcock's many biographies on the burner for some days now, but it's a dish that keeps cooking but never seems to be done. It's been decades since I first read the book,... more »

Neo-Slavery Makes Comeback

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
For-profit prisons have created a “neo-slavery” in the US, according to award-winning journalist Chris Hedges. Inmates work eight hours per day for major corporations such as Chevron, Motorola, Nordstrom’s and Target, yet only have the possibility of making up $1.25 an hour. In addition, companies that provide services like phone calls overcharge prisoners on even the most basic services, making hundreds of millions in profits annually. RT’s Ben Swann speaks to Hedges, who explains how this shadowy system came into existence.
