TV Watch: "The Comeback" comes around to a question similar to one being played out in "Mad Men" -- a question of humiliation
*Valerie (Lisa Kudrow) and her nemesis Paulie G (Lance Barber) on the set
of Seeing Red, in The Comeback*
*by Ken*
Since I last wrote (briefly) about the resuscitated season of *The Comeback* last
week, a couple of things have happened. First, I thought of a possible
factor in my confessed reluctance to abandon the show, even though I
haven't really enjoyed it, and second, we've gotten the extra-long finale.
You recall the premise. The original *Comeback*, as created and written by
Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow, had Kudrow as TV actress Valerie
Cherish making what now turns... more »

Deflation, the Good and the Bad
Many people dislike inflation or rising prices of goods and services,
understandable. So deflation or declining prices of commodities is good for
them? Who benefit, who lose, if deflation happens?
In Europe, high prices of commodities and services, partly due to high
taxes, discourage people from high spending. Cheap oil should encourage
them to travel more, spend more, but it seems it did not do the trick, now
the threat of deflation in the Euro area is getting higher.

Why Be Surprised That Overly Entitled Wall Street Banksters And Their Political Protectors Rape Young Children?

The Economy: "What Happens When Your Credit Card Stops Working?"

"America does not run on cash. It runs on credit. In theory, America’s line

Jan. 3: Pope Francis is an environmental-terrorist threat to New Brunswick
The Irving press seems to be ignoring the story; but the pope has announced
at a recent environmental council that he is declaring climate change his
issue of the year. Now, as we all know, there is no climate change. If
there were, the oil barons would never soil their good names and lie about

Maybe we should send a real expert to straighten out the Pope. Perhaps

Diabetes - an Evolutionary Hypothesis
Hyperlipid wrote an interesting post a while back about the Inuit,
and how a genetic mutation means that many of them are never in ketosis
even eating a very low carb diet. Basically, the mutation ensures that low
carb brain metabolism runs predominantly on glucose, not ketone bodies.
Because similar mutations are common in other populations dependent on low
carbohydrate seafood diets, it must be a valid alternative to ketone
metabolism in these populations.
But what really interested me is that not everyone has the
mutation. Natural selection has kept the Inui... more »

New Year, Same Old Bias
There was a short series of reports on Radio 4's *Broadcasting House* last
year that I meant to blog about at the time, but (for some reason) didn't.
There were three reports in the series.
The first focused on the stories of desperate (im)migrants trying to get to
Europe via the Spanish (Gibraltar-like) enclaves on the Moroccan coast.
(There have been quite a few such reports on the BBC in the past couple of
years - Paul Mason's pieces for *Newsnight* being the ones I remember most
clearly).
The second focused on the stories of (im)migrants trying to get to the UK

The First People
Some of what is said here is simple nonsense but a lot of the rest
conforms somewhat to the much more detailed effort here to piece together
time lines going back 200,000 years.
What i find interesting is the recognition of a recent human bottleneck
which is completely understandable in terms of the Pleistocene
Nonconformity but not for instance the Atlantean Subsidence in 1159 BC.
The former event suggests few survivors at all. It is more astounding that
we have actual records at all from the Indian subcontinent. At least
survivors did make it through.

Link Between Mushrooms, Bees, and Mass Extinction
Who would have ever guessed that our pollinators feast on a form of
mushroom nectar in order to detoxify? This is an important discovery that
fully supports my long held initiative to promote forest development and
general grooming. All of that produces wood chips to be put on the ground
and now we have even better reasons to do so.
Besides truffles of course.
This perhaps over states the connectivity although not entirely once we add
back the spirit aspect.

Sri Yantra Geo-glyph
[image: mantra]
I am somewhat surprised that i do not know about this, yet it appears well
documented. It certainly is one of the ongoing series of geo gylphs also
called crop circles in England where we have hundreds now many equally as
complex as this one. Part of the problem perhaps was that when this showed
up in 1990, the british press was debunking the English glyphs by providing
credence to hoaxers Bob and Doug (i think i recalled the names correctly).
The majority of all these Glyphs can be explained by airborne microwave
laser technology as demonstrated recently by US... more »

"Talk about the "mystical experience" in the company of scientists and
you'll often get looked at as if you were going on about crop circles or
astrology. This not quite fair, I think. The "mystical experience" is too
well documented in the religious literature of the world to be so easily
dismissed. Granted, people who report these experiences often invoke the
language of supernaturalism, and the language is properly suspect. But we
use the descriptive categories we are familiar with, and supernaturalism is
deeply ingrained in our culture.

Mario Cuomo (1932-2015)
*by Ken*
Some of these passings are really hard, and this is a really hard one.
Because Mario Cuomo was a politician and a genuinely decent human being. He
respected people and understood the role government had to play in
improving their lives. There aren't a lot of pols, especially not those who
rise to a station like three-term governor of New York State, who by
example can make a person feel better about the human race.
Of course Mario (it just seems like he'd want us to think of him as Mario)
was also incredibly smart and hard-working. And for all of that, his record

war made that ascent possible. The film also focuses on Ernst Hanfstaengl's
