Late last month we looked at some solutions to the devastating problems inherent in hair-trigger police brutality. In the *German Ideology*, Marx and Engels liken ideology to an image refracted through a *camera obscura* - everything is reversed, it's a world upside down. British politics today is much the same. Firstly, what has been pleasant to watch is how the research community has piled into the aging problem over the past several years. It has become popular and not least because we are seeing options. This item picks up on research that improves the immune system which is clearly a problem for the aged. I think that anti aging has two short term targets that are attainable. One is to fully restore internal blood chemistry so no deficiencies exist whatsoever. The second is to establish a robust immune system. Thus this is part of that agenda. For a break, I thought Iid like to write about something broader and more useful than the Irving press. That occurred to me as I read the story about the shooting of twelve people at a Paris tabloid that had run cartoons of Mohammed. Now, that's a typical news story. It sounds sensational - but it really says nothing. We often think we get meaning out of it when, in fact, we understand only what our biases and prejudices want us to understand. A Muslim Jihadist might read it and say, "Allah is great." But for a Christian reading it, the message is likely to be "Those Muslims are ...more »

On Tuesday, the first day Congress was in session this year, John Boehner and House Republicans launched a back-door attack on Social Security through a sinister rule change that sets the stage for drastic cuts to benefits. The rule change House Republicans pushed through paves the way for a sudden 19% cut in Social Security Disability Insurance benefits next year – and Republicans are planning to use it as leverage to force broader and deeper cuts to all Social Security benefits. We need to fight back now to stop Republicans from slashing Social Security benefits. Sign the peti...more »

The buzz is currently is about big data, or collecting very granular consumer and transactional information and then being able to analyse it. The results may help spot trends, aid development, identify detail which was impossible to compute, or even recognise using traditional methods. As we gather more and more data, the trick is to exploit it in a ways that improve the product, enhance the consumer experience and increases revenues or profitability. It sounds simple, but it isn’t. The first challenge is to collect the data, the second is to be able to analyse what you probabl...more »

The notice of appeal is so general that I am unable to construct any basis for an arguable appeal from the motion judge's factual findings. Very little would be required to show that there is some basis for an appeal in these circumstance...more »

*“On The Damned Human Race”* by Mark Twain “I have been studying the traits and dispositions of the lower animals (so-called), and contrasting them with the traits and dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me. For it obliges me to renounce my allegiance to the Darwinian theory of the Ascent of Man from the Lower Animals; since it now seems plain to me that the theory ought to be vacated in favor of a new and truer one, this new and truer one to be named the Descent of Man from the Higher Animals. In proceeding toward this unpleasant conclusion I have not guessed or ...more »

"*This Isn't Investing... It's Russian Roulette"* by Bill Bonner "A man puts a single bullet in a revolver and spins the chamber. He puts the gun to his head. He pulls the trigger. Nothing happens. He spins the chamber again. Gawkers watch. Speculators take bets on whether he will live or die. Again, the man pulls the trigger. The gun clicks. But no discharge. He spins the chamber again. Again, the speculators make their bets. They bet that he must be getting closer to the end of his game. Although the actual odds stay at 6-to-1, the speculators are now happy with 5-to-1 odds. Kurt and I have applied for residency in Costa Rica. Until we are approved though, which generally takes about a year (give or take), we have to leave the country every 90 days. Our last two trips have been to Nicaragua. This time we decided to go to Panama. I think I have avoided Panama in the past because a lot of people on the expat message boards I am on talk about having more problems at this border, i.e. not being give 90 more days, etc. Also, Panama requires proof of more things at the border sometimes, like having a certain amount of cash per person and proof of travel b...more »

The attack on *Charlie Hebdo* was an atrocity calculated to outrage, to intimidate, to silence critics of Islam, and to remind the West that terror attacks can strike at the heart of its capital cities. It has provoked an outpouring of anger and solidarity with the victims, and not a small amount of stupid bigotry. Yet one hopes the barbarity seen in Paris does not achieve this objective. Liberty after all has faced opponents tougher than three gun-toting fanatics who cowardly attack defenceless people and then run. But why has this happened, or rather how could it have happened? [image: image] Yes, today I am a leftist. This is no joke: Unidentified terrorists killed 12 people and injured seven in an assault on the Paris office of the French satirical magazine *Charlie Hebdo* earlier today. Gunmen armed with assault rifles shouted "'we have avenged the prophet" and "Allahu akbar," or God is greatest, as they stormed the headquarters of the magazine that has in the past published irreverent cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed and the emir of the Islamic State. Just before noon, two gunmen with Kalashnikovs exited a black car and forced an employee of ...more »
