Russia trying to organize its retreat from parts of Ukraine
ISW: Russian forces continued to withdraw from western Kherson Oblast while preparing to conduct delaying actions that will likely be only partially effective. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces have completely abandoned their positions in Charivne and Chkalove (both approximately 33km northwest of Nova Kakhovka), and Russian officers and medics have reportedly evacuated from Beryslav.[1] The Ukrainian General Staff added that Russian forces are also removing patients from the Kakhovka Hospital on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River, likely to free up hospi... read more

September sets new record for migrants entering US
AP: A surge in migration from Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua in September brought the number of illegal crossings to the highest level ever recorded in a fiscal year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The year-end numbers reflect deteriorating economic and political conditions in some countries, the relative strength of the U.S. economy and uneven enforcement of Trump-era asylum restrictions. Migrants were stopped 227,547 times in September at the U.S. border with Mexico, the third-highest month of Joe Biden's presidency. It was up 11.5% from 204,087 times in Augus... read more

Republican Lee Zeldin now leads in NY governor's race
Red States: The gubernatorial race in New York was the sleeper race that not too many were paying attention to at the start, figuring that Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) probably didn’t have much of a shot. But Zeldin has been gaining steadily on Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul from being back by double digits over the past few months. He’s been emphasizing the problem of crime in New York, something that is very important to voters and on which the Republicans have a big edge–given the Democrats association with the “defund the police” movement and soft-on-crime prosecutors. Now, a stunn... read more

Sunday morning music
Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo is one of the twentieth century's most important and prolific producers of music for guitar and orchestra. He's probably best known for his world-famous *Concierto de Aranjuez* (which provided his title when he was ennobled by the King of Spain as the first Marquess of the Gardens of Aranjuez). Other notable works include the *Concierto Andaluz* for four guitars, which debuted in San Antonio, Texas in 1967, the *Concierto Madrigal* for two guitars, and his *Fantasía para un gentilhombre*, which is my favorite of all his works. Biden Has An ‘Off-Ramp’ On Ukraine
A Rose has bloomed In the Blinken/Sullivan/Biden desert of ideas on Ukraine. I refer to Rose Gottemoeller, 69, who was Under Secretary of State for Arms Control during the Obama/Biden second term and knows much more about the real world than the boys Biden has in the back room (if I may risk damning her with faint praise). Looking for adults in the room? Gottemoeller could be the woman of the hour, if Biden’s ivy-mantled advisers would stop preening, sit down, and listen. Writing in The Financial Times two weeks ago, Gottemoeller referred to the "quiet bargain" that ended the Cuba... read more

“How many arches can you count in the below image? If you count both spans of the Double Arch in the Arches National Park in Utah, USA, then two. But since the below image was taken during a clear dark night, it caught a photogenic third arch far in the distance- that of the overreaching Milky Way Galaxy. Because we are situated in the midst of the spiral Milky Way Galaxy, the band of the central disk appears all around us. The sandstone arches of the Double Arch were formed from the erosion of falling water. The larger arch rises over 30 meters above the surrounding salt bed and spa... read more

But what the wisdom of the ages says is that we do well not to grieve on and on.
