I Have Two Last Names – Here is Why They Both Matter
Sylmarie Dávila-Montero, Diverse - 6 hours ago
“I have two last names,” that is the very first thing I say, since I moved to the States, every time someone asks for my surname. I grew up in Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the Caribbean, with a unique mix of cultural antecedents and the use of two surnames as the tradition dictates. Therefore, for me, my “two last names” were one of the most common things in the world, until I got to graduate school.
Former Medic Whistleblower Exposes How the Military is Testing Experimental Vaccines on Soldiers Using them as “Lab Rats”
Brian-Admin, Health Impact News - 6 hours ago
The U.S. military has been at the forefront of vaccine development for use in warfare, not "public health," and they have a long history of testing experimental vaccines on our own troops. When things go wrong and people are killed or harmed by these experimental vaccines, it is covered up, and often blamed on something else. One of the first records of this happening was in 1918, at Fort Riley, in Kansas, during WWI. The soldiers were injected with an experimental bacterial meningitis vaccine. The vaccine went horribly wrong, and a strain of bacterial pneumonia created a pandemic ...

One of the most notable called for the creation of a new federal government entity focused on cybersecurity: a national cyber director (“NCD”) (as well as a corresponding Office of the National Cyber Director). That vision is close to reality now, though the endgame remains uncertain. Section 1752 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2...
The Digital Social Contract: A New Lawfare Paper Series
arozenshtein, Lawfare - 10 hours ago
We are thrilled to announce the launch of a new Lawfare paper series, entitled: “The Digital Social Contract.” Technology has always played a central role in Lawfare’s core focus: the interaction between law and national security. But whereas the government once played the dominant role in driving, or at least managing, technological change, today the government increasingly finds itself trying to catch up with changes it has little control over. Some of these changes—like the rise of cryptocurrencies or machine learning—are driven by researchers around the world. Others—like the ...
Platform Speech Governance and the First Amendment: A User-Centered Approach
klangvardt, Lawfare - 10 hours ago
How should the First Amendment apply to laws that tell giant platforms like Facebook or Twitter how to police third-party content? On one view, content moderation is a form of constitutionally protected “speech” in itself, much as a newspaper’s editorial choices are speech. But this view leads to an absurd result in which the First Amendment’s free speech guarantee becomes a mandate for a small number of corporate heads to rule public discourse. This paper therefore offers an alternative: When a law regulates the dominant platforms’ content policies, the law’s downstream effects on...

What Selling F-35 Stealth Jets to the UAE Means for Israel
Michael Makovsky, Charles Wald, The National Interest - 7 hours ago
*Michael Makovsky, Charles Wald* *Security, Middle East* In retrospect, it might not have been the best choice to effectively append the F-35 jets to the Abraham Accords, but appended they are. This week Congress will vote on the Trump administration’s proposal to sell the United Arab Emirates (UAE) highly advanced F-35 combat aircraft. We are leaders of the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA), an organization which fervently believes a strong Israel is vital to American national security, and we consider on balance the sale merits proceeding. There are leg...
Why M-16 Rifle Was So Hard for the U.S. Army to Shake
Joseph Trevithick, The National Interest - 7 hours ago
*Joseph Trevithick* *History, Americas* History shows how it can be difficult to replace a major weapons system. *Here's What You Need to Remember:* The M-16’s poor showing in Southeast Asia prompted a slew of upgrades to help keep the guns working—and troops alive. In the early 1970s, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency worked on a “Low Maintenance Rifle” concept—or LMR. DARPA thought the new weapon could be a replacement for the troubled M-16 rifle. The Pentagon hired TRW Systems to design the new gun. The U.S. Army’s Small Arms Systems Agency at Aberdeen Proving G...
How Joe Biden Can Learn from His Prior Mistakes in Iraq

*Maya Carlin* *Security, Middle East* Although Biden’s future Iraq policy remains uncertain, the incoming president has a long and controversial legacy in the country. A commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed by an airstrike along the Iraq-Syria border sometime between November 28 and November 29, according to Iraqi security officials. The commander, whose name has yet to be released, was traveling with three other individuals in a vehicle that was reportedly transferring weapons across the border into Syria. Can a U.S.-Iran Showdown Be Avoided?
Daniel R. DePetris, The National Interest - 7 hours ago
*Daniel R. DePetris* *Iran, Middle East* The last thing Washington needs is to create a scenario where stumbling into a conflict in the Middle East is increasingly likely. Mohsen Fakhrizadeh’s killing is not only a stark illustration of how quickly events in this region can spiral out of control—it’s also a reminder of why U.S. foreign policy is in sore need of some common sense. Can Joe Biden make a change for the better when it comes to Iran? The U.S. Navy to Restore the First Fleet. The Reason Is China.
Peter Suciu, The National Interest - 7 hours ago
*Peter Suciu* *Security, Americas* The U.S. First Fleet was in operation from January 1947 to February 1973 and operated in the Western Pacific as part of the Pacific Fleet. It was disestablished and its duties assumed by the U.S. Third Fleet. Last month, Navy Secretary Kenneth Braithwaite called for the re-establishment of the U.S. First Fleet, which would be a new numbered command that could help build-up the U.S. Navy’s presence in the vital Pacific and Indian Ocean seaways to Australia’s north. The calls come to help ward off further expansion and aggression in the region fr...
Why the $908 Billion Coronavirus Stimulus Plan Is a Bipartisan Winner
Desmond Lachman, The National Interest - 7 hours ago
*Desmond Lachman* *economy, * The U.S. $ 908 billion budget stimulus now being proposed by a bipartisan group of Senators and Congressmen is to be applauded. This is especially the case considering that it is designed in a manner that should provide immediate and effective economic support without unduly adding to the country’s already very high public debt burden. Right now, the most pressing U.S. economic policy challenge would seem to be to limit the economic damage from an expected dark Covid-19 winter so as to ensure that we are in the best possible shape to enjoy a strong ...

However, I noticed a lot going on that wasn't directly related to the business of guns - more about the cultural clash that's growing bigger, wider and deeper by the day in these formerly United States. It was an interesting experience. ...
