In the case of the AR-15-style rifle, it's complicated because the cartridge it fires (usually the 5.56x45mm NATO round, or the .223 Remington lower-pressure civilian version of that round) is a compromise. It does some things more or less ... more »

Russia Is Adding Its Own Twist To America's Fierce AC-130 Gunship

Michael Peck at The National Interest - 17 hours ago
*Michael Peck* *Security, * The AC-130 has proven invaluable in small wars against lightly defended targets in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as supporting special operations. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *The AC-130 is still a military transport aircraft at heart, slower and less maneuverable than fighters. Against opponents with weak air defenses, it’s a terror. But a conflict in Eastern Europe or the South China Sea, against advanced Russian or Chinese air defenses, would be a different matter. Call it the “Spookovik.” Russia wants to make its own version of America’s le... more »

Staring at a Human Security Catastrophe

NEW DELHI, Apr 28 (IPS) - The defining images of South Asia's battle against Covid-19 are hundreds of thousands of migrants, many with children on their shoulders, trudging from New Delhi, Kathmandu or Dhaka to their far-flung villages. They are daily wage earners engaged in construction, small enterprises, plying rickshaws or street selling in the informal sector. With lockdowns and economic activity shut down to combat the virus, these migrants lost their low-paying jobs and were forced to flee to their rural homes. Those who remained in these cities face food insecurity, rising... more »

A Dozen Mediterranean Shipwrecks Reveal Global Trade

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
This is a great start and merely proves that we need to do the same thing for every square kilometer world wide that is even slightly prospective. In fact governments need to pay for this knowledge in order to set the explorers to work. Once a site is located, it turns into a partnership between both the agency and the salver as well in order to optimise the knowledge recovery. This can work rather well as there certainly are potential rewards. At the same time all artifacts need to be studied and recorded and then documented for end ownership. Museums like to be the end buy... more »

Who had a higher standard of living, peasants in the Roman Empire, or peasants during the High Medieval era?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
This is a sound question although the argument that cheap grain from Egypt undercut the peasents is deeply suspect. The problem was always land ownership and security. Grain was shipped to key population centers and were consumed right there. The surrounds could never have supplied all that grain at all. Land transport costs were also a lot higher as well. What killed the peasant was a steady imperial supply of slaves for the larger landholders who replacedthe peasent. The owners were not growing cash crops to ship either which made Southern Slavery bearable to their compat... more »

'Dragons' Observed Flying Over Central Florida

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
This is reallly worth noting. We have already understood that visiting Earth environs has been opened up substancially to a range of space borne folk. It is all low profile. Yet we do now have a slew of sightings of the so called Mothman around Chicago. Here we have a flock of dragons interacting with their transport. Definately exercise. For the past few years, ample bipedal forms have been around disguised as us. fortunately for us they have rules. Our assumptions on intent simply do not apply. *'Dragons' Observed Flying Over Central Florida* *Wednesday, April 22, 2020*... more »

Cour de Lion

I am not a historian, though I do read history. So I’m sure that I’ll be fact-checked to death on this blog post on King Richard I (King of England for ten years from 1189-1199). Who was Richard? Media and pop art portray him one way. The Robin Hood sagas (all of them) deify Richard, […] The post Cour de Lion appeared first on Virtual Mirage.

*“Crowded Cosmos: Universe Contains 2 Trillion Galaxies, * *10x More Than Previously Thought” * by RT “Astronomers have long pondered how many galaxies might exist in the universe – and the answer appears to be a staggering two trillion. The figure, obtained from Hubble Telescope images, has shocked scientists who estimated the number to be at least 10 times smaller. The finding wasn't easy to come by. An international team of scientists examined deep space images taken by the Hubble from over the past 20 years, and converted them into 3D pictures. From there, they measured the numb... more »

My company there, Les Belles Lettres, has been publishing the Greek and Latin classics there since 1919. We’ve translated about 900 of the 1,200 texts that still exist. It seemed a shame that the world would end before we completed our work.
