TRIBAL DECLINE: What should kids be taught in school?

bob somerby at the daily howler - 13 hours ago
*TUESDAY, AUGUST 20, 2019Our tribe gets out over its skis: * What should American public school kids learn about American history? There is no perfect answer. When we were kids, the K-6 American history curriculum began and ended with this: *"In fourteen hundred and ninety-two,Columbus sailed the ocean blue."* We had to memorize that. And let's face it—we turned out fine! In theory, it would be better if kids were given access to a wider view of the world. That said, the progressive wing of our liberal tribe may have a slight instinct for overreach, a matter which seems to have c... more »

Avogadro Number and Philosophy

Galaxy M81There are two ways by which we can approach philosophy: the big picture approach and the deep insight approach. The big picture approach takes a holistic view of philosophy—it seeks to draw broad inferences on man’s nature and his place in the universe. The deep insight approach entails a dive into the philosophical treatises to conduct an examination of the philosophical arguments. To develop a philosophical view of the world it is necessary to have a mixture of both the approaches—a holistic view of philosophy should go hand in hand with the knowledge of the arguments o... more »

Meanwhile, Congress began hearingson whether and how to regulate it on a national level. In a surprising moment of bipartisan consensus, the only thing lawmakers fought about was how extensive restrictions ought to be. Seth Moulton: Way Below Zero-- Nationally, In Iowa And In New Hampshire

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 16 hours ago
Seth Moulton represents Massachusetts' comfortably blue 6th district in the northeast corner of the state. Even as weak a candidate as Hillary was able to beat Trump there 56.1% to 38.2%. The district starts in the suburbs north of Boston-- Saugus and Lynn-- goes as far west as Billerica and Tewksbury and north through Salem, Ipswich and Newbury to the border with New Hampshire. The last time the GOP seriously contested the seat was when Moulten-- an independent who switched to the Democratic Party to run-- knocked off long time incumbent John Tierney in 2014. Ammunition selection for small handguns

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 16 hours ago
Following my blog post yesterday morning on the selection of concealable firearms, I had a number of comments and e-mails about my ammunition recommendations for .38 Special snubnose revolvers. I said that I used Buffalo Bore's full wadcutter load. I was criticized for this, because it's not an expanding load (i.e. a hollow point or soft point bullet), and therefore might lead to overpenetration. Folks, there's a very important point to remember. Bullet expansion is a function of two things: *bullet velocity* and *target composition*. The last factor is something we can't cont... more »

Stop Blaming Video Games for Mass Killings

*Christopher J. Ferguson* *Security, Americas* [image: Reuters] The research doesn’t say what some lawmakers suggest every time there’s a mass shooting. In the wake of the El Paso shooting on Aug. 3 that left 22 dead and dozens injured, a familiar trope has reemerged: Often, when a young man is the shooter, people try to blame the tragedy on violent video games and other forms of media. This time around, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick placed some of the blame on a video game industry that “teaches young people to kill.” Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California w... more »

This is more like it. your so called militia do need core skill training with any weapon. In fact you need to be well checked out on any new weapon. You should be able to properly operate it in pitch darkness. The sounds alone should inspire an intruder to surrender. Just imagine intruding in a house and the lights all go out and you hear someone loading in a mag and then cocking the weapon. It now takes real guts to keep intruding. Even better your training cadre get to know who their militia actually are and can call on them in an emergency. this is all sound practice ... more »
